Aside from the fact they aren't playing the PM's XI game and are turning down some match practice, isn't the entire week somewhat of a tradition with the functions the teams attend in Canberra surrounding the match? None of England's players who played in Perth will feature in the 2 day warm up game against the Prime Minister's XI in Canberra starting on Saturday. Might have been handy to play a bit of pink ball cricket after not playing one of those matches since their tour of New Zealand in 2023.

The best part about the bazball philosophy is that you can't be told anything, any observation from the outside (unless your hailing it as the saviour of test cricket)is automatically rejected and the cult becomes even more convinced in their belief.

They're flying to Brisbane on Wednesday, so attending those functions is beneath them.

Kept the sport afloat during covid while our disgraceful governments locked everyone in their homes literally 24 7 and the cricket team refused to go anywhere while touring teams had prison style conditions.
They are well with in their rights to tell the pm to **** right off

Considering Mark Waugh is considered an excellent batsman for averaging a boundary more than 38 for his career, I find that to be a little bit of an exaggeration.

38 (again, recognising that Root’s record has since dropped from that mark because of his twin very low scores in Perth) is not a ‘bad’ average. It’s slightly ‘lower’ than what most people consider decent.
Sarwan averaged right on 40 for his career. Gayle 42. These were decent test batsmen. Sure, it’s a long way off Root’s career mark, but it’s still not the mark of someone who can’t score someone.
Same as a bowler who averages 31-32 somewhere being ‘terrible’ there. No, it just means he’s not great there.

An overall 50.9 average going down to 33.3 in Australia is still a fair drop off when we're talking about one of the greats. It is a relevant criticism and no he's not on his lonesome with that sort of country-specific drop off. His brilliance has been blunted a bit in away Ashes series though and there's nothing wrong with pointing that out.

True. It's what makes it so effective.
Eventually it will run out of steam and the team will be replaced like happens to all great teams but it has overall improved test cricket

Stuart Law made a good point that a Canberra pitch where the ball bounces at knee height doesn't prepare you for a Brisbane pitch where the bounce is higher.

A lot depends on who you played against and in what era.

And, just as important, who you played with.

After all, it gets a whole lot easier to bat when a bowling group has to deal with 6-7 players they're worried about instead of two.

Did we? Ponting was lingering for a long while, seeing he averaged under 40 for the three years prior to retirement. Plus, he only averaged 6 in that South African series when he was finally pushed.

Punter just didn't read the room the time to call it was the India series when he had those last moments of greatness. Bit like Buddy Franklin going on after randomly getting 50+ goals at 36 years old, sometimes the universe allows for a great player to retire a hero, should they want it.

Khawaja isn’t 1 tenth of a player Ponting was and Ponting was hardly “pushed” anyway
