Eric Abetz, Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal

The Tasmanian Government and key building and construction unions have come together to reinforce their support for the Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium.

At Selfs Point today, Minister for Macquarie Point Urban Renewal, Eric Abetz, stood united alongside the CFMEU.

“Tasmanians built our Hydro, Tasmanians built the Bridgewater Bridge, Tasmanians built our roads, and they built our hospitals,” the Treasurer said.

“All of these landmark projects were underpinned by jobs and the ongoing value that they provide to Tasmanians when completed.

“During the construction period, the stadium is expected to create over 1,500 jobs and 200 jobs on an ongoing basis once in operation.

“This is an economic boon for the entire state – with a tourism and construction ripple effect to be sent to every corner of Tasmania.

“Tasmania’s strong economy underpins everything we do, and this is an opportunity we cannot miss.”

exactly .... but given the commentary from known/suspected rectangular code warriors* in here i think we can safely assume they care ..... a lot

* shameless (and crude) pete hegseth reference here [bad word warning]

that's hilarious, there's been way more negative commentary coming from Tasmanians themselves. The only comments I've seen are also reflected by many footy supporters with the questionable tactics by the AFL strongarming Tasmania to build an expensive stadium with a roof in order to get licence, for a city that has 200,000 which is fewer than some large suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne.

Noone really cares too much about Hobart and Tasmania which are very small fry.

Ultimately this could be good for Tasmania in the long term, but will get ugly when the build costs start blowing up.

What do they give a shit? It's not like the NRL would ever put a team there, and even if they did they'd probably want to play at the same venue.
Supposed fairness in federal funding (even though if they wanted more federal funding they could do things like, turn up to their league's preliminary finals and not have to give away tickets, as funding rightfully goes to things that people have already proved that they want to use).

Lol, aren't the feds bankrolling the PNG NRL team? And that's not even money that's staying in Australia.

Well yeah, not claiming that they're being fair and unbiased

Can guarantee that when the Blues play their first game at the new stadium the car will be on the ferry for a 10 day Tassie trip. I'll be the one spending heaps of money and eating the best scallops.

Well done to all that worked to make this happen. I hope that they have a rogues list of people like Jacqui Lambie and the Greens people when the place is up and pumping who are not allowed in. And add that Jack Mundy poster to the rogues list. He seems like a proper whinger.

Just checking, you're joking, right?

100k members, only charged $10, accumulated over a year and a half, is very different from 100k ticketed members. It's different from a Collingwood or West Coast with 100k members trying to fit into a 23k stadium.

And that 100k is split across the island. A decent chunk is based in the north and will rarely travel to Hobart.

Mac Point will sell out for the first few seasons, but its capacity is equal to 9% of the city. Long-term, 23k is a good number.
I think Tassie Devils are likely to have one of the most parochial support bases in the AFL. Almost certain to be sold out for the majority of matches at a premium. That's great for Tassie and the AFL.

Small point but the capacity is 24.5k for AFL.

23,000 seats + safe standing for 1,500 in the north-east section of the lower bowl, like what Geelong did for the last stage of their redevelopment:

Closer look:

That area might also be converted to an artificial hill for cricket, depending on how easy they make it on themselves to convert it.
