With Tasmania coming in (and Round 0 already being a thing), it’s a good time to do away with the “traditional” Carlton vs Richmond Round 1 clash. It’s not a season opener anymore. So I would love to see a us playing up in Tasmania for their first game in Round 1 (surely they won’t play Round 0).

You now have to playoff to face 5th/6th who are playing at home with a weeks rest.

Makes it more likely that Elim finals in week 1 are non events

Is that a bad thing? You probably shouldn’t even be a flag contender finishing 8th .

But being rewarded for finishing in the bottom half of the ladder seems a bit silly.

Anyway we know it’s just about fan engagement, revenue and everyone hates the pre finals bye . Fairness isn’t a consideration.

Plenty you could do to fill the pre-finals bye.

Brownlow count springs to mind, name the all Australian team, hall of fame inductees etc.

But Given finals are effectively extended to 10, anyone think there will be serious thought given to a 20th club?

It wasn’t always top 8, outside of $$$$$ for the AFL, I like the idea that this game levels out the fixture a little, it’s a bit harder to whinge of a tough draw when you need to finish top 10 to get to finals.

Probably less of an issue for TDK, but an interrupted preseason for JSOS doesn't bode well. He's already got a checkered history with injuries, and little ones can compound pretty quickly to mostly derail a player's season. We've seen it frequently before, so stands to reason the Saints are gonna have to endure more of the same.

You never want to see players injured...but if someone has to be then I'm OK with it being a couple of blokes who jumped ship for money.

I mostly agree but the fans after a year or so will love it.

On the flip side, this will make winning the GF from 7th or 8th, a hell of a or harder and make finishing top 5-6 a much bigger advantage than it is now
