It doesn’t work like that. I know many Port supporters who went to the Crows inaugural game against Hawthorn with the belief they were going to be Crows supporters well before Power was a thing. Who you are and who you follow is hard to beat. You’ll have some diehard supporters who won’t just stop supporting a team they’ve supported forever just because a new team has come in!
Sure, if Burnie puts a team in the AFL in 20 years time then all the Burnie Football Club fans can barrack for Burnie, by all means.

But they'll support the team from their state in the meantime right?

Not... St Kilda or something that they only chose because they saw Nicky Winmar take a cool mark on tv once when they were a kid

Is that the same as saying every footy fan in this state goes for either Crows or Port? Yeah the majority probably do, but there’s still plenty of other AFL supporters. Being a fairly big footy state like Tas, allegiances might be tough to break. It might be harder to crack than non AFL states.

but every club outside vic has that issue. Its something I believe will only be exacerbated with Tassie. The problem with the free market style trading rules is that it is anything but.

Vic clubs claim they have the same issue but they dont. With 10 teams in Victoria thats at least multiple clubs in a position to trade home interstate based local talent every year. Compared with just two teams in every other state that neither are really in a position every year to bring that talent home. It sucks and its an area the AFL have to address.

What?

It’s in Tasmania best interest to draft Victorian country kids as Victorian metro kids don’t stay in that club very long.

nah, you pick the best talent available. if they go home they go home. If its a 50/50 then you be choosy. We have had a good run of vic metro players stay. I think thats a bit of a misconception there.

Like who?

Of the top of my head, Rory Sloane and Brent Riley.

Can you please remind me of who stayed?

This comes up from time to time. Are there any stats on metro versus country retention?
The bigger successful strategy in recent times seems to be trying to pair mates if possible

Was a big part or Brisbane turning around their position as,l a cellar dweller and constantly losing players, and GC literally got an afl hand out to replicate it with Rowell/anderson. Tried it with rankine and luko but I doubt they were ever close, luko Rozee would have been interesting

(academies may also have assisted those strategies in Looking successful)

Notable exits from Adelaide in the last 15 years/

Nathan bock - gold coast (SA boy)
Phil Davis - GWS (ACT/Adelaide)
Tippett - Sydney (Sydney)
Dangerfield - Geelong (Vic country)
Gunston - Hawks (Vic metro)
Cameron - Brisbane (WA?)
McGovern - Carlton (WA)

Did I miss any?

Doesn't appear to be any pattern at all with Vic metro and we barely lose any players back to Victoria (their home state).
