17 that is Captain bloods number is it not??? Rioli wore it I see, and so does Jnr
Don't forget triple premiership player and hall of famer Barry Richardson.

And 3 Rioli's have worn it now.

The last good 22 was Barry Rowlings (beside Lalor for a year), so it's been a while.
Josh Caddy was pretty handy.

When did captains start wearing it? I know Newman did.
Did Campbell change from #9 to #17?

Kane Johnson definitely wore #17 as captain.

Someone said it came in when Jack Dyer died, 2003.
Yeah, that rings a bell. So I think it was Campbell, then Johnson and then finally Newman.

Thank f**k Cotch ended the "tradition".

Are you serious?
yyyyyyeeeeeeeessssss...........

i must admit i am not one for numbers.

so backstory, I am not a Melbournian RFC supporter so wearing jumpers to the game or guernsey's was not part of my vernacular, especially growing up.

now i understand Cotchin wore 9 recently, but just to qualify, Cotch great captain but Cotchin, with respect did not win three norm smiths in GF winning premierships like Dusty not that I am sure Dusty does not want to be regarded as a God either.

but look it is a team game, before our recent success 17 was thrown about, aka Captain Bloods relevance which is fair but Richmond was very successful in 1980 and prior and apart from one or two numbers did the number of players have less significance back then.

I think General Mark Lee was one was he not and i think Flea was three maybe?

i am a 72 baby, i know he was successful but my age is revealing

like in six years time when Sammy Lalor and Sammy Cummings are hopefully shinning, who are the six year old sons and daughters and maybe a little bit older following then as fans of RFC?

Yep. Spot on.

Wayne Campbell and John Northey were a couple of other outstanding players to wear #9.

As for #3, premiership captain Roger Dean wore it, as did Brett Deledio and Duncan Kellaway.

I think when you are younger maybe, you remember the premiership years like 1980. like I am 72 baby but I remember flea with three before Lids and Kellaway?

Lids was a champ and he had three for a while, no premiership though, far more recent than Dale

With Mark Lee, he had his large imposing frame and the one just stood out on the stage I guess

Giving Shai Bolton KB's number was smart I think

it is interesting cause there was the premiership drought between 1980 and 2017 and that may effect the memory of certain numbers maybe

I'm sure it does. There's plenty of premiership players that have worn numbers 1, 2, 11 & 12 for example.

The only number that has been worn for all 13 Richmond premierships is No.4.

The only other Cumming to ever play for us was indeed one of KB's several understudies, the constantly overshadowed Daryl Cumming. As soon as Vlastuin retires get this chap straight into the Cumming number, 1.

Hales from the same neck too, I wonder if he is related in any way. I think Daryl did something silly like played in 4 flags in 4 different grades for the Tigers. No, here it is, played in 7 premierships for the Tigers. U/19's flags in 67, 68, 69, 70. Reserves flags in 71, 73. Senior flag 74. Only missed in 72 when he played in the losing Grand Final v the Blues. 7 flags in 8 years with the top flight runner-up finish in the other season. But even in that season we outscored the Blues across 3 matches against them in the finals series, so we'll give Cumming Snr a moral flag for that, giving him 8 in 8 seasons. Astonishing. 😎

Brother to Sam’s grandfather I believe

Remember Daryl well. He was very fast. I think he was a sprinter as well in his early days, IIRC. Probably a little undervalued as a footballer. He went on to be the footy coordinator at Wentworth later in life, where Sam hails from.

Good genes run in that family.

I didn’t think Campbell ever changed to wear the 17. I thought that 17 for the captain was first brought in when Kane Johnson was the skipper

It was a dumb ‘tradition’ and I’m glad Cotch said no
Yeah I can't remember Campbell wearing 17. But if it was brought in when Jack Dyer died (2003) he would have worn it 2004 as he was captain then.

FF. WAYNE CAMPBELL, RICHMOND TIGERS, AFL GREETING CARDS ...
Yes, Wayne Campbell did wear the number 17 guernsey for the Richmond Tigers, especially later in his career when he took over the iconic jumper from Kane Johnson, who had it after Campbell moved back to number 9, but Campbell's primary number, especially as captain, was often the famous No. 9. Campbell wore numbers 46, 9, and 17 during his illustrious career with Richmond, becoming a four-time Best & Fairest winner and club legend.

He wore it in 2004. 2005 he was back in the 9 with Johnson taking the 17 as new captain.

"Tradition" only lasted 9 seasons hahahaha

His kicks would travel 30 metres and go 80 metres high
