This reactive improvements MO by some of the various Oz Governments has to stop.

It's almost like they too often don't want to get blamed for making the required changes early, and then have no doable options to politically announce changes/improvements after incidents, or bad news get's revealed/leaked.

And that delaying change, provides more wriggle room to try and attribute more blame to previous Government(s)/bureaucrats.

I'd like to hear what ex- Australian Army David Elliot has to say about all of this and his time as a Liberal NSW State Politician (2011-2023)

'... he strongly requested on several occasions that his officers at Bondi, many of whom were young constables, be equipped with rifles because their Glock pistols would not be adequate in an active-shooter attack.

"Several times in 2014 and 2015 I made them aware that we needed rifles. I said you're asking these young kids to basically commit suicide by not supplying them with rifles,"
he said.

"And if you don't want to do that, then at least have a rifle available for the supervisor.

"Nothing was done by the commander at the time or the inspector."
...'

'Elliott served as the Minister for Police and Emergency Services between April 2019 and December 2021 in the second Berejiklian ministry and the first arrangement of the Perrottet ministry. Elliott was Minister for Counter Terrorism from January 2017 until March 2019 and Minister for Corrections and Minister for Veterans Affairs from April 2015 until March 2019 in the first Berejiklian ministry. He was Minister for Emergency Services between 2015 and 2017 in the second Baird government.'

So out of the publicly known victims, only the little girl was born in Australia. It's extremely concerning we have so many foriegners interfering in our local politics atm. Netanyhu calling out Albo is beyond the pale. Netanyahu has brought his genocide war to our shores.

What a crackpot.

I do hope there's some sort of irony or hidden sarcasm in this post, because if not, WTF.

Albanese has previously condemned the acts of violence on 7/10/23. He has on many occasions spoken against antisemitism. He is being attacked here for failings of previous governments. More than 10 years you say? Well, I wonder who had decision making powers then?

If Josh was so hell bent on stamping out antisemitism then clearly he never crossed the floor when his party was in office.

Sorry, you can’t condemn Albanese for failing when he has thrown support to the Islamic community by recognising Palestine as a state as well as condemning antisemitism. He had attempted to create an inclusive Australia. He has also spoken against the blatant disregard Israel has had for Palestine and its attempts to level the region whilst maintaining messages of support for the Jewish community here. He has attempted to balance viewpoints and maintain inclusiveness, the only thing he can be guilty of is being too trusting and inclusive.

Stop the sanctimonious posturing, the continued shameless blaming of a man who has tried to unite Australia without further isolating the middle eastern community who are already labelled suspicious and untrustworthy by the cabal of Murdoch doomscrollers. The Islamic community is not responsible. There were two radical and nasty people who made that decision.

And yes, i maintain it was a totally opportunistic grab by Frydenberg and irrespective of his religion he has always been a grub.
Your personal attack on Josh Frydenberg as a grub says a lot about you and why it is not possible to have a constructive debate with you.

Your offensive language, your disgraceful assertions of political opportunism and your assertions of crocodile tears from Josh in a previous post show you up. Just another one who uses insults to cover your hollow excuses for arguments and debate. The grub is not the widely respected Josh Frydenberg.

Josh spoke not only to his community on that one - he spoke for the Australian community made up of many different kinds of people who have watched their country turn into a safe haven for extremism and the normalisation of attitudes and actions seen in countries that lack open and democratic institutions and are rife with tribalism in terms of societal divisions backed up by armed militias and propaganda against Jewish people as just part of the daily life.

I have never in my life witnessed so much blatant insertion of those attitudes into so called peaceful and democratic demonstrations and into insitutions of higher education. Not once did the Albanese Government do anything practical to deal with this hate speech and the violence it always implies that will be done given the opportunity.

All the empty rhetoric by flunkies and apologists now about Unity and how the political opposition should basically shut up about all the steps that led to this nightmare and now play ball with the Albo Cabinet team to make them feel better about what they chose NOT to do cannot take the spotlight away from this Govt`s wilful ignorance.

The Liberal/National Opposition repeatedly called upon this embarrassment of a Govt to treat the growing hatred in both speech and actions as an emergency requiring legislative powers. That did not happen.

Instead the PM gave media conferences saying how terrible all this was, wearing his hangdog look, and kept turning the subject onto Nazi salutes and the far right parading around.

When it was discovered that the Iranian Govt had sponsored some of the terrorism here, Albanese and Co seized upon it like a life raft - `See! It`s coming from the Iranian Government! End of story.` No need for serious discussion and legislative changes.

A normal Australian Govt reaction would have been then to link that with all the Anti Semitism going on in Australian cities whether it was graffiti or insults/threats, physical harm to people who were identifiably Jewish, celebrations of the Hamas massacres, people feeling comfortable enough to proclaim how this was somehow worth celebrating and praising, feeling comfortable to talk about martyrs who would continue doing this until the destruction of Israel and Zionists (the latter category including every Jewish person who doesn`t agree with the violent extremists of the Palestinian side), people parading around in public with clothing saying Kill Zionists/Bash Zionists, university students howling down anybody with a different opinion who thought that hatred should not be enabled, etc.

Did the Albanese Govt do this? No. Did it say it would work with the Opposition to ensure legislation would be put to Parliament and enacted to deal with this emergency and growing terrorist-enabling environment in our country? No.

Did the PM proclaim enough was enough and the Gaza-Irael conflict would cease to be the excuse for the rampant Anti Semitism becoming part of daily life in Australia. No.

Did the Albanese Govt call a meeting of the State Premiers to work out unifying legislation that would at least begin to address the surge in anti Jewish hatred and the aid and comfort given to those who promoted it and participated in it?

The Opposition was met with denial, shrugs, even laughter in Parliament from these jokes of Ministers especially the ones who care more about being voted in at the next election than presiding over an orderly, safe, western liberal democratic society where the norms of Jewish people/Israel hating in other countries should have zero tolerance.

A withering editorial in The Adelaide Advertiser pointed out that some of the Federal Cabinet seemed to be re-living their student activist days in their refusal to deal with the obvious. I`d still like to be able to hear the audio of those pro-Palestine demos Albo was running around and talking at.

I remember them and many of those participants were Australians who sounded unhinged in their accusations that it was a Palestinian Holocaust, not to mention just plain stupid and too lazy to research what it is that makes the genocide of Jewish people a Holocaust.

Albanese, Burke and Marles need to grow up and move beyond those student days and face the reality that an ideological approach that ignores a conflicting reality staring them in the face is incredibly dangerous as well as deluded.

They also need to think beyond demographics in their seats and develop some integrity instead of the self-righteous statements that have been undermined by their own actions and lack of ethical actions.

I cant believe we just released those 7 potential terrorists, that we know have extremist Islamic beliefs.
Police say we will continue to investigate if their Islamic extremist ideas are a threat but at this stage we will be releasing them. Like wtf.

"Speaking later to the ABC, Deputy Commissioner David Hudson was even clearer, stating the men had a “similar sort of ideological adherence to Islamic extremism”.

Reports state one of the men detained was under an active ASIO investigation, and another was known to the security service."

They should just deport them and their families, instead of hoping they dont act on their religion. It seems we have learned nothing after all the previous islamic attacks here and around the world.

We need to strengthen counter-terrorism laws, by the sound of it.

In our western liberal democracy the authorities need some real evidence like weapons in the car and social media messages with intent to harm or kill. If these men had cars with at least one gun (supposedly a knife was found among them) then that would be something to go on.

And given that religious extremists/other kinds of terrorists learn the art of plausible denial and train their families/relatives in it, the authorities are unable to nail them simply for being related even if it`s suspected with good reason that they`ve aided and abetted their parents/partners/children.

It`s predictable that we will get all the How terrible the police are! and the usual concerns about authority overreach especially from people who don`t give 5 cents about authoritarianism since they think it would be ideal under their particular extremist terms and conditions.

They like to use the freedom in Australia and our institutions just like they do elsewhere in western liberal democracies to promote their ideologies and hatred that revolve around restricting the lifestyles we take for granted in our kind of society.

Unfortunately we have no leader in Australia like the Muslim mayor in a major city in either the Netherlands or Belgium who said `If you don`t like freedom, then f**ck off` and he was not addressing those native to Europe.

In Australia, deportations for foreign nationals who have committed crimes can be done but when it comes to extremists, since they claim they can`t go back home because they are stateless or came to Australia seeking refuge/asylum, then we have come to this situation. This should be dealt with by new laws. Likewise citizenship is difficult to remove but I`d guess that dual citizenship is held by not a small percentage of extremists.

With the men arrested and then released, from reading between the lines at least a few of them exchanged messages on social media that alerted the authorities to them. The arrest was not based on their appearance and other attributes - a couple of them had already come to the notice of authorities.

I wonder if regular people realise what clueless halfwits politicians are when they talk about guns.

This was Minns...

"The proposed legislation would also reclassify straight shotguns and prohibit belt-fed ammunition magazines in those weapons."

One problem stupid. There's no such thing as belt-fed shotguns.

And WTF are straight shotguns? Guns now have a sexual preference?

This is your second long post built on outrage and short on precision.

You keep collapsing criticism of Israel, protests about Gaza, extremist rhetoric, university activism, and a domestic terror attack into one undifferentiated threat... then blaming the government for not legislating against the whole bundle at once.

You also treat Jewish Australians as a single political constituency while simultaneously insisting Muslims must be judged by the worst elements associated with them. That double standard is exactly what poisons everything.

Who saying that antisemitism is okay?

The disagreement is whether expanding speech laws, or limiting protest, or fast-tracking emergency legislation based on overseas conflicts would actually make Australians safer or simply entrench grievance and radicalisation further.

Governments don’t preserve liberal democracy by abandoning liberal principles whenever fear spikes. History shows the opposite.

Straight pull shotgun, where the cycling action is a straight pull lever rather than a lever, pump or break..

With something like adler b230t you can fire five rounds in a second without taking the trigger had off the firearm.

So before you were an expert on knife "statistics" and stories, now you're expert on guns as well? What are you talking about?

I know what a straight pull shotgun is.

Apologies, I was taking the piss out of the clown politician who doesn't.

I'll give you a hint:

He's wrong on both facts.

"The proposed legislation would also reclassify straight shotguns and prohibit belt-fed ammunition magazines in those weapons."

Right on both counts.

Soon we might need stricter car ownership laws too. Germany just arrested a group of this same trash preparing to drive a vehicle through Christmas celebrators. Until Albo admits the main issue and brings in laws to deport or lifetime jail for any that follow extremist Islamic organisations, we will never be free of terrorism. I doubt any gun law changes will make a difference to these people but even if it does, they will find other ways. Vehicles, machetes, even light aircraft are easy access if they tried. We would even train them to fly I am betting.
