"Cricket Australia chiefs informed BBL bosses last week that the new innovation will be coming in for next season which will allow clubs to pick a Designated Hitter who can bat but be saved from fielding, and then replaced mid-innings by a specialist Designated Fielder who cannot bowl."

Similar to the Mercantile Mutual Cup in the late 90s, just with some fancier branding.

does anyone really pay attention to who is the leading run-scorer/wicket-taker? (excl those playing Supercoach)
Doesn't really mean anything when there is never a point during the season where all teams have played the same number of games.

So just as Khawaja is retired from test cricket, they bring in a rule so he can keep playing hit and giggle…

yeah, and it's a perfectly logical rule. it's much better than the silly x-factor/super-sub/impact player rules, precisely because it takes away some of the tactical elements relating to match situations. it just becomes "do you want to keep an old fat guy around for another season?". it'll probably help older bowlers too as they'll be one less old batter to 'hide' in the field which allows for them to be hid in the field. it's a rule that will improve the quality of cricket without changing the game too drastically. it's a no-brainer

the BBL probably should have had this rule from day 1 and most T20 competitions should look at having a similar rule.

It would provide entertainment for cricket lovers who perhaps don't have family to be with on christmas day
last time they floated it, the players association turned it down.

Wonder what the NBL game in Sydney drew on Christmas Day? Although that’s only on ESPN.

That’s a very low crowd for Sydney especially with a semi local opponent.

As a fan id love to sit on the couch on Christmas night and watch a game of cricket.

As a person who understands athletes are humans and have families and lives noway should they have to play a game of cricket on Christmas Day.

Yes they get paid well but put yourself in there position. How would you feel having to play a game of competitive sport Christmas night.
