Yep, Reuters accepts failure and mediocrity so easily.
That Reuters analysis is itself flawed.

Don't have time to pull it all apart, but it concludes by saying "Norway’s wealth fund is not the equivalent of 10 trillion pounds per person".

Nowhere does that meme claim the 10 trillion is per person (which I'm sure we can all agree would be effing unbelievable.)

Thatcher pissed away the North Sea oil boom could sum it up. That her sad little acolytes could take power suggest the English aren't real bright.

"10 trillion British pounds per citizen" - idiots cannot even get their headline right

Your post says Norway has the equivalent of ten trillion pounds. That's wrong. The Reuters article shows that it's 1.3 trillion pounds.
Your post says both countries were roughly the same in 1970. That's wrong again.
UK Debt per capita in 2024 = $153,000. Norway Debt per capita in 2024 = $132,000.

I'm not disputing the privatisation comment - Norway has done an excellent job securing wealth from natural resources.

1/ UK Debt per capita in 2024 = $153,000. Norway Debt per capita in 2024 = $132,000. That is nit picking.
2/ I assume the £10T can be explained by including the asset price. But again it is nit picking.

Anyways, Britain handed over their assets to the private sector for what? 4-5 times the annual profits?

Norway still own their assets over 50 years later and still collect profits annually - over 50 times now.

Who would you rather be?

Thatcher pissed away the North Sea oil boom could sum it up. That her sad little acolytes could take power suggest the English aren't real bright.
Britain got a 5 years sugar hit. Norway have been charging rents for 50 years and counting.

How many private companies would sell an asset like that?

It is insane. And a root of the highest order.

Frydenburg's role model, he won't rest until water companies are pumping shit into our rivers and charging us for the privilege.

Waiting for the benefits from Howard's gas deals

And yet all these conservative crumb maidens want people like Trump because he is an experienced "businessman" - he is experienced at failing

How often does a landlord sell an asset?
How often does Gina sell an asset?
How often does Blackrock or Vanguard sell an asset?

The capital class are all in on privatisation, because they want to own everything and they want to be the ones charging the rents.

Blackrock are currently buying every house in the UK and America and that will be coming to Australia soon enough.

The concentration of capital is out of hand.

for the first two years, I thought he was a failure - so quiet and only piped up when his own job was potentially impacted by reforms. However he has come a long way and will be getting my vote next time. Would be great to get a second independent to get rid of the useless liar in Katy Gallagher.

Wish we had more Independents rather than the senate being controlled by the majors.
I had an hour with him one night at Belco at a pre-polling booth, genuinely lovely bloke who cares.

The Under 16 social media ban disappeared from the news cycle incredibly quickly due to a few things, mainly the Bondi massacre.

I wonder if the Albanese government are happy with that - they probably are.

Anecdotal feedback from everybody I’ve spoken to suggests that, as predicted, it’s been completely pointless and easily skirted around. Social media companies are not going to many lengths to enforce it.

Highly doubt it’ll be policed in any serious manner - assume that like the news code, it’s been a time legislative effort in response to NewsCorp’s wishes. A big waste of time and mine for something that will never have any impact.

Change has to start somewhere.

I dare you to read The Anxious Generation and then come here and defend social media.

We have no idea how this ends yet. It is possible that the social media companies create age specific platforms and properly mediate them which could actually work - in which case you get someone’s age early and can enforce membership. That will obviously take time and more markets than Australia to force change.

As it stands actual children are watching the victims of the Bondi massacre lying dead on the ground or worse actually getting shot.

Children should not be watching that.

The laws may seem inadequate but we have no idea what they might start yet.

We saw that on the 6pm news.

Happy for there to be discussions over reasonable censorship of material that may damage / offend.

As a community we’ve always had that and it’s slipped in the age of social media.

It can be done effectively. You don’t see hardcore pr0n everywhere on Facebook for a reason.

But attempting to ban platforms just to appease your partners in the legacy media isn’t that. It’s just government trying to look after their mates.

Senator Pocock is a great example of an elected representative. Truly independent, and even managed to increase his majority at the last election (and looks set to lock the Libs out of the ACT in the Senate forever). Unfortunately Territory Senators are only elected for three years but I hope he stays as long as possible.
Yeah we need two dozen like him.

I take issue with “piss away”, which implies she wasted it, or missed an opportunity.

It was a very deliberate approach - give the money to the wealthy and large corporations.

Yes, it is convenient for NewsCorp.

NewsCorp is not the reason they did it though.

Not NewsCorp specifically, but the major parties attack social media because it has a serious impact on their way of doing business.
The major parties or the Liberals? The Liberals have the most to gain from the legacy media.

Either way the social media laws are about helping kids.
