And so what do you think we would have to give up to secure his services?

Wouldn't be real comfortable giving up either of first two picks for him, would much prefer PSD pick one. Cost us nothing, so would be worth a crack.

People think he's a hack because he can't kick.

But that's almost a good thing, as he's very good at handballing the ball off to midfielders running past, which is what you want from a ruckman. He's very good at link up play, and gets around the ground well, he's pretty athletic.

Obviously needs to improve the kicking, and probably his marking, but he's only 22 and got plenty of time for that.

Long - term, Pattison and Blake would be a pretty good ruck combo for the Tigers. I couldn't see why they wouldn't take at him #1 in the PSD, if he was there and Judd wasn't available.

He'll get over his sulk and re-sign with Geelong. Why would you leave a side like that?

Because he knows that when the Tigers are involved, goals are involved.. ;)

Carlton were pessimistic about a quick resolution to their trade stand-off with West Coast over Chris Judd, entering Monday's opening round of official negotiations.

All 16 AFL clubs are meeting at Telstra Dome for face-to-face discussions, with Friday at 2pm (AEST) the deadline for any deals to be done.

With departing Eagles skipper Judd having declared his desire to join the Blues, a deal between those two clubs is the most eagerly awaited, particularly as it could impinge on other prospective trades.

But Carlton chief executive Greg Swann doubted they would reach an immediate agreement.

"We'll see how we go, it's the first day today, nothing will happen today," Swann said.

West Coast officials refused to comment as they entered the negotiations, but they have been adamant they want at least the Blues' No.1 pick in the national draft in return for Judd, while Carlton have been equally steadfast in refusing to offer that up.

If the two clubs do not reach an agreement by Friday's deadline, Judd could nominate for the pre-season draft, where Richmond has the No.1 pick ahead of Carlton.

But Richmond football director Greg Miller said the Tigers' chances of picking up the superstar for nothing in that draft were "very doubtful", saying history suggested the Eagles and Blues would eventually come to terms.

He also dismissed speculation that the Tigers would do a deal with Carlton and allow Judd to slip through to the Blues in the pre-season draft, saying that idea was probably suggested purely as a bargaining tactic by Carlton.

"I think that's just leverage that they can use through the media and they haven't even spoken to us, it's very doubtful," Miller said.

Meanwhile, Miller said the Tigers were interested in young Geelong ruckman Mark Blake, who was dropped by the Cats ahead of their grand final win over Port Adelaide, after playing 22 games for the season.

"We haven't spoken to (Blake's manager) Anthony McConville as yet, but we certainly will chase that up," Miller said.

Blake is one of several ruckmen expected to be a subject of negotiation, with the Western Bulldogs confident of snaring Adelaide's Ben Hudson and Melbourne expected to recruit Crows' youngster John Meesen.

Did you here Millers comments today? Sounds like negotiation is well underway. Do you want Blake? :)

Yes, we want a Dean Cox clone, but think about what's realistically going to be available in the PSD. We will no doubt pick up another Knobel type to see us through the short term while we draft more rucks and develop them.

Would much rather Wood than Blake. Wood's what, 19? He doesnt just handball all the time and hes a bit taller than Blake. I think he'll be a very good player for whoever he plays for. Blake seems to have had a hissy fit (dont blame him) and wants to leave more to prove a point.

Simmo's great when hes playing well. Should hopefully get back to that next year and the mix with Patto works well. We definitely need another ruckman, no doubt about it.

Woody-wood-pecker for me.

One is out of contract and potentially available in the PSD, the other isn't.

Look guys im best mates with his cousin Mitch and they are fair close, Mitch was talking to him yesterday and said it was almost a certainty he would be entering the pre-season draft if he wasnt traded, he does not get along with half the list down there, especially King and Harley and being dropped for the grand final was the last straw, I can only see him being traded to the pies for better picks or going to the tiges in the draft....

The comments he is a dud and we need someone better are all well and good but the reality is we are a team that won 3.5 games and finished stone cold last, could not even beat a team that tanked the last 11 weeks, we are not going to be able to attract a top notch ruckman like Wood without having to give up a lot to get him. Blake while not a great possessor of the ball might be the type of ruckman we need that can direct the ball so that it favours Foley, Tuck, Coughlan and co instead of them trying to shark the hitout from the opposition. Blake is at least a proven ruckman. What other option do we really have available, an untried Meeson, an older Hudson or trade away a hefty price to try and get Wood? If Blake costs us a PSD pick then I'm happy with that.

Most posters here want Wood because Blake only averages 10 possies a game, yet Wood only managed to average 6 disposals per game in 8 games.

Apart from that their numbers are pretty much identical, I know stats don't tell the whole story on their own but I can't see what the big fuss is regarding whether we get one or the other.

I think he is overrated and was rightly dropped for the Grand Final, won't say much about his character if he walks out because of that. He's just not that GOOD!!
