I caught up with Secret Honor (1984) over the Oscars weekend and it distinctly felt like an influential formative film for PTA. Altman, PBH, the protagonist characterisation, a little Pynchonesque, Bohemian Grove Committee of 100, etc. Worth a look, an acquired taste though. It’s during that 80s period when Altman adapted a lot of plays, this being the most successful I’ve seen from those.

I think I’ll go The Master next cos Josh O’Connor can get it.

That’s The Mastermind, which is also great but Kelly Reichardt (who is also great!). The Master is PTA’s movie with Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

(actually Doctor Who in 2013, but laughed when I saw the attire 😂 - Piotr of a Soviet sub apparently)

inside, 2024, guy pearce etc

prison movie. nice movie, but comes across as redundant, doesn't really add or do much other prison movies or shows haven't. mildly interesting was pearce's character more or less taking on some of the sins of another character to keep them out of trouble, after the movie devotes time to prison preaching.
most interesting thing about the movie, is the victorian state government happy to have their logos over a prison movie where crime happens and a victim's family puts out a contract on a prisoner.

Yes, very highly. Films like this don’t contend for Oscars very often, glad they didn’t pass up the rare opportunity. Especially given the last four winners (plus Sinners) were all duds to me.
Thought this one was the lesser.
No plot, no script. Saved by great acting

At its simplest, it’s the colonel’s sexual fantasy that he needs to tidy up.

I dunno about it being a lesser PTA. Like yeah, time allows us a clearer perspective than being of the moment (Magnolia was seen as a good but pretentious sophomoric film, showcasing his talent again but also his need for an editor, with 1999 an all time great year for cinema, now I’d say 1999 is seen as being just another year, but Magnolia and the also then-coolly received Eyes Wide Shut being two of the major highlights).

One Battle After Another is incredibly topical, and so probably even doubly so we’ll have to see how it ages. But I will say living in these times and seeing that movie, my initial reaction would be to have it up with There Will be Blood.
'99' is HIGHLY regarded by film buffs (rightly so)
I'd reel them all off but reckon most on here would be well aware.

The Mastermind is a movie about a guy who steals paintings that is paced like watching paint dry. A good test to see what the old 2026 tik tok brain can handle.
That was my first intro to slow cinema (unless you count In A Violent Nature haha).
I didnt mind it but my wife hated on it...because she spent half the movie on her phone! Ive been meaning to watch First Cow but wonder if I will still like Reichardts style minus O'connor.

Nah huge recommend for First Cow - it's definitely my favourite of hers that I've seen. Subject matter and execution is on point. Plus you still have Magaro who is excellent.

It's slow paced for sure but feels like it's got a bit more going on.

The Seed of the Sacred Fig- an Iranian family drama/thriller about a father who takes a job as an investigator for the government. Set during the Mahsa Amini hajib protests of 2022, it has real footage of the protests throughout and deals with the family coming to terms with the morality of the father’s job and the situation in their country.
Timely watch with what’s been going on in their country for the last 6 months. A longish runtime and worth watching, but probably only once.
7/10- I gave it an extra point due to having to be filmed in secret illegally.

haven’t seen the last two she did yet but all the others are good. Maybe more daytime viewing than primetime? Night Moves might be the best one to try out with the wife.

It bored me shitless. There has to be a point to the slow pace but this was possibly just wank by the director.

Whereas Jeanne Dielman is even slower but compelling. Because you experience the routine of her life, but then little things change and start to hint that not everything is quite right.

A lot of her other movies have Michelle Williams so hard to complain about that either!

Honestly, she’s one of my favourite directors working today.

Mr Earth - a random midday movie I chucked on at midday about a Matthew Reilly like combat for Earth

It was that slow my tv asked me if I was still there

I didnt wait for the tv to tell me the tv would turn off in 60 seconds - I did it myself

Possibly a movie there somewhere but not for me
