I'm feeling very positive about Watts. He's managed to put himself into a position where he has to prove himself more so than last year.
And haven’t seen a smile out of him all pre season. Could be a good sign.
I see he is scheduled to be at the first Talking Footy at the Port Club this year too, along with Brogsy.
Perhaps a bit more of the club’s imposed sanctions, facing the masses up close?

Thanks for the update doc.

Any idea what the thinking is for R1-4 without Dixon?

- Ryder, Marshall, Westy?
- Frampton slips into Dixon's spot with Westy on the wing?
It better bloody well be Frampton.

Not because hes a gun but because we need to play to our structure that we want to play when he returns.

I was told there is a lot of pressure on Watts, Marshall and Ryder for the forward work without Dixon. It's only going to be a couple of rounds, I don't see it as a huge issue. I also don't see Dixon as critical with Lycett in the side.

What surprised me was when they listed Watts, Marshall and Ryder they also said "Lieno". Whether that means Lienert may play some forward time or not, who knows. They could have meant Lycett. I let it slide despite it being an eyebrow raiser. It's not as if we'll have all of those guys down there at the one time.

It also confirmed Watts is going to play forward, but it seems he'll be roaming more up the ground like the Crows' Lynch.
Watts roaming up the ground could be a weapon if he gets his head on straight.

Mixed news.

Charlie Dixon will not be available until about round 4. He is nowhere near fit enough and hasn't been as dedicated to his off-season conditioning as we would have hoped.

The news about SPP is legit. Hes absolutely killing it. A completely different player. Topping many of our charts and tests.

One we haven't heard about is Dougal, Dougs is actually in amazing nick. He actually beat SPP in a few tests but requested his numbers be fudged as he didn't want to ruin SPPs golden run lol.

Ken is absolutely commited to playing all three of Rozee, Duursma and Butters at the expense of senior players. Competition is fierce. Expect to see all three kids feature in R1.

Rocky has had some really nasty personal things crop up, hopefully it won't affect his season and preparation.

Burton is looking good but we are still trying to find his limits as we are concerned about his load as we aren't 100% certain he's not injury prone. Just getting him slotted into the rhythm.

The Noosa trip was a huge success with many players taking alot away from it. Brought a togetherness and trust that we were really after.

Ken has done a 360 on everything. Is letting his assistants in and listening to support staff far more. His general demeanour is improved. In alot of ways he's less stubborn and more open minded. Knows his job is at stake.

Butters is light at the moment but he's been underfueling himself through juniors. His training performance has been elite even though hes been under eating. Is now motivated to eat more as he's excited by the prospect of what he can do if he's fuelled correctly as his numbers when he's not been are impressive!

Atley is sadly falling behind, in limbo a little bit. Has to make a name for himself this year.

Jonas more likely to be captain than Wines but the decision is a hard one and it could go either way. Wines maybe a bit too much to learn still.
Any news on Hartlett?

He just needs to picture the oval as a giant pool, with the football being a big boob coming in his direction. He'll be right.

Is anyone still of the opinion that we're trying to win a flag in 2019?

Look it's still an even comp and any team can hit form at the right time and be right in the mix, but we are 100% aiming for 2022/23 at the earliest.

We should absolutely be aiming for a premiership this year, the list is still good enough. Our two biggest issues have been game plan and coaching and not having a back up for Ryder. Obviously we have Lycett now and all the noise is the game plan is changing as such we should absolutely challenge. Losing Polec and Wingard hurts us, but getting Burton makes up for Polec and we should see big gains from a few players.

If we’re aiming for 22/23 and this group has been written off, then Hinkley should be moved on ASAP. He couldn’t do with the side we’ve had for the last few years no reason to think he will then.

Agree on every single point.

If the refreshed coach's box leads to a simpler and more attacking gameplan, we're as good a chance as anyone, I just think we've quietly entered a little rebuild and we'll be aiming to win a flag in the prime of Marshall and Howard, not in the prime of Jonas and Gray.

Hinkley can't be sacked until 2020, and by then he might have enough good quality developing talent playing well for Hinkley to push for a new contract. *Shudder*

We are aiming to win a premiership. Whether we actually will is very unlikely. We are definitely keen on a fresh look. More for the culture and refreshed feel for the future though. We're split between to goals really.

Coach says he wants to get games into his top fifteen draft picks that he lost two best 22 players to get ahead of such luminaries as Sam Gray and Jack Trengove.

Without Dixon in the side, there are three spots in the best 22. Burton comes in for Bonner.

I had Mayes in my best 22 but Duursma is just as good. Rozee was already in there. So Butters comes into Dixon’s spot (and Watts moves from a wing into the forward line until he comes back).

Hartlett said on Triple M that the club want to get some time into him for JLT1 and more in JLT2.

Seems like we are trying to do a rebuild (more a reload than anything) without bottoming out whilst at the same time, remaining competitive and making finals.

It's doable. Our list has enough talent there and the young players will add some flair that was lacking last year especially.

It's always hard not to be excited around this time of the year because of the eternal optimism, but I like the fresh attitude going through the team right now. It's a refreshing note on what had become a very stale and boring group.

got more than a bit of it last friday but then 'froze'?
early days I 'spose

we've got an interesting mix this year & don't forget
Amon Patmore and Garner who all featured nicely and are chaffing at the bit.

Leave them hungry. That's what will drive them to get better and therefore inspire the team to get better. What they should be focusing on is winning a flag with the Magpies and being ready to step into the seniors - building the connection with each other so that when we have injuries the next player can step straight into the mix and perform. Our best years are always the ones where we had a strong team underneath.

For me, the pass mark for this team has always been 'Is Sam Gray getting a game?'

If he is, it means that there are no players who are providing the defensive game necessary to keep him out of the side. And that means the team isn't going to do much.

If he isn't, it means that all players are doing their job defensively and his offensive limitations have been exposed. And by 'doing their job' I don't mean they've got to run back into defensive 50...I mean they just have to make it hard for the opposition to get the ball past wherever it is they find themselves on the field at the point of turnover.

Sam Gray should be in the same merry-go-round guys like Ah Chee and Young were on - a guy who only gets a game if there are injuries. I'm hoping he doesn't get a game at all this year if I'm being honest. Far more exciting prospects on the list.
