its also funny people look for who may get the Docherty role when he wasn't there last year, so his injury isn't actually creating a role within the team to be taken, he's just not coming in and taking one up.I don’t think there specifically is a ‘Docherty Role’. Like we saw last season many tried to play it (O’Shea, Marchbank) however didn’t see the stats that docherty put up. I think it’s the docherty role because it’s his, he is an excellent player and he made it so good. I can see some potential upside in Newman, however he’s just unknown in such a weird Carlton defensive system. I would be much more comfortable taking a punt on proven scorers like Smith/Williams or even L.Ryan/D.Roberton. I think in 1 or 2 years down the track we could see an explosive Newman when Simpson finally retires and docherty is back to full fitness
