Well we would have to disagree on that. Geary makes too many mistakes to be a "best of" anything. Brown - good when you are playing a Tom Hawkins but there is only one Hawkins in the AFL. All the other big forwards are fast and mobile and have gone past Brown.

Geary is a very good defender, people can question his captaincy but he's very good at what he does. His form dropped away at times but he was playing his role well still.

BT, any of Newnes, Coffield, or even Hunter could play on HB.

That's Coff's best position at the moment I'd say and maybe even Hunters as well.
I think Hunts has graduated to inside midfield but if Coff wants a game, it would be playing at half back.
I'm not sure where Newnes fits in this year - he can play anywhere and the coaches love him but he doesn't have an obvious position

His best game was playing (Newnes) like a Jordan De Goey forward who came right up into the midfield.

If we get 2017 Newnes back i'd have him there ahead of Savage.

If Newnes gets back to that form then he deserves to be in the team somewhere. I hope he does . My worry is we kept saying the same thing about Mav Weller and Armo last year .

Don’t Panic !!

Bench? Good coverage for any role

I’d be surprised if Armo plays more than 5 games this year... I love the bloke but I think he needs to make way for our up and comers now.

St Kilda and proud.
Yeah if he plays 5 games either his body has done a remarkable turnaround or we've been decimated by injuries.

1st 22 assuming all fit:
Geary Brown Roberton
McKenzie Carlisle Webster
Hannebery Ross Billings
Gresham Bruce Kent
Long McCartin Membrey
Longer Steele Steven
Acres Clark Newnes Lonie

Players I’m disappointed I can’t fit in:
Coffield Sinclair Parker

McKenzie Newnes and Lonie the guys at risk from those 3 and are real 50:50 decisions for me

So Sandy would be:
Rice Joyce Clavarino
Savage Austin Hind
Coffield Sinclair Phillips
Parker King Paton
Young Marshall Battle
Pierce Dunstan Armitage
Langlands Wilkie White Bytel

Week1 I’d have Roberton at chb and sounds like Joyce at fb. Coffield can take robbo’s usual spot

Yeah but Newnes is only 25ffs.

( meanwhile reports say that Mav is training the house down ).

If we want to make finals, we really need at least 3 of our kids to lift their game to A grade level on a consistent basis.

For all the talk, our forward line is still untested in terms of experience.

Need guys like Billings, Gresh and Steele to take the leap. Robbo will bring added class.

Guys like Acres, Sinclair and Clarke need to step up a level as well.

If they don't, well be miserable at best IMO due to our much publisiced lack of star quality.

66 agree some of these guys have to stand up.
By all reports Steele , Gresham , Billings have really stood out this preseason , just hope that translate's into dominating on the field.
Seeing last year we were last in clearances per game this where they have to be a hell of lot better and hopefully a few guys who can do that this year.

We need 3 more A grade players to rise from within because we cant rely on FA or trades IMO. If we do that, any trades are icing.

Roberton was close to our best player a couple of years ago and was AA quality. Bruce is our most proven tall forward. If we can get this two back and Steele and Gresham along progress it will make a huge difference.

The players who could go next level but probably never become elite are Members and Webster, Webster missed a good part of last year and Membrey had a slow start. Get all our improvement that failed to eventuate in 2018 and a few back and who know what we could be. It's looking more promising to me and I'm a pessimist.

I'm not seeing... Hoping like hell but not seeing it TBH.

Always said we lacked players who stood up when the game was getting away and despite changes, not sure that will change.

Up to guts like Gresh and Billings IMO.

Then it's the guys who have been on the fringe like Acres and Sinclair that need to put their best season together... Now.

A lot comes down to luck, last year the wheels started to look a bit loose early and that North game seemed to just knock the confidence out of them, then injuries started mounting. Get a good start and keep the key injuries at bay and at some point it can all click into gear. I reckon Geelong, Hawks and Sydney are set for a bit of a slide and Port are going to be a bit lighter on for talent after their outs.

Guys that are close to A grade (some on unrealised potential at this stage)

Just need a heap to jump up a category and we will start to get some real progress.

Gresham and Billings have to play somewhere, if they go into midfield then where are the other mids going to play ? It’s easy to say they will be mids this season but then we have too many mids to fit into one side .

I can’t see where else Coffield, Sinclair, Paton , Newnes and Clark will play if not forward . There won’t be room for them in midfield and I don’t think they are defensive enough to play back . Coffield, Clark , Paton and Phillips might all one day become full time mids but they aren’t there yet . Bytel I really know little about .

Marshall is a handy player who might develop but at this stage he is not a ruckman so if he plays it has to be as a forward and second ruck . If Marshall plays then one of Bruce , Membrey and Paddy don’t .

If Membrey , Bruce and Paddy play forward then that means King , Marshall , and Battle will have to play for Sandy .
Battle might become a defender but Brown , Austin and Clavarino would probably be ahead of him just with their experience playing back .

Richo seems the like having 3 tall forwards so that means only 3 small ones . If Billings and Gresham aren’t in the midfield then they play forward which only leaves one spot for Lonie , Long , Parker , Kent and Young . This means no room for Coffield, Sinclair, Acres , Paton, Newnes , and Clark.

With Hannebery a mid , that leaves Ross , Steven , Dunstan , Armo, Steele , Hind , Phillips , and possibly Clark , Coffield , Kent , Acres , Paton , Sinclair , Newnes , Gresham and Billings as the other mids .

Hard to fit everyone in .

Don’t Panic !!

It’s not hard to fit blokes in it’s called “selection integrity.”

Watching Ratten work with players above if Stkilda are to be successful guys like Marshall have to be in team

You will see a lot of teams go the really mobile ruck type as part of their combinations.

We ain’t Richmond , why try to be , think that’s the feedback Richo got back from the players.

“Play a game plan that is relevant to the personnel you have at your disposal”
Not someone else’s be innovative as opposed to being reactive.

We have played Gresham & Billings as midfielders in match simulation, line meetings for mine will
only improve this year if they play there.
Bruce kicked a bag the other day. ...why ? because they played him as mobile forward ,
not murdering him as second ruck.
Long & Parker to me are exactly what we crave , electric , physical in front half required going forward,
however if players don’t perform then hasta la vista.

With news Longer will unlikely be fit & Parker a good chance to make his debut I think it’s time for an update. I’m also taking the punt that Hanneberry won’t be available.

B: Geary - Clavarino - Battle
HB: Webster - Roberton - McKenzie
C: Sinclair - Steele - Acres
R: Pierce - Steven - Ross
HF - Gresham - Membrey - Billings
F: Long - Bruce - Parker
I: Marshall - Clarke - Newnes - Kent

E: Lonie - Paddy - Coffield

Dunstan, Savage, Armo & Phillips next in line.

Inj: Hanneberry, Longer, Carlisle
Susp: Brown

It’s really time that guys like Acres , Sinclair , McCartin , Dunstan and Newnes finally take that next step if they want to have long careers . They might struggle to get a game unless they are in top form . Hopefully the release of Weller at the end of last season might put the cat amongst the pigeons. I really hope for those guys sake that they can have a big year . If not they may be delisted or traded at the end of this season . I know that sounds harsh but we will have to make room for the next lot of draftees so someone will have to go .

We need 2 C's to jump up to B and at least 3 CBA's to cement their spot.

I'd revisit this in a few weeks. Might be closer than you think IMO.

I like the idea of adding a lot of pace to the 22. We really got cut up on the turnover & couldnt spread last year.

Yeah it was almost embarrasing seeing some half backs streaking away from us. Some of our turnovers were also embarrasing. Incidents of patients with a stabbed hand must have been thru the roof at the alfred!!
