SOUTH Adelaide is hoping Box Hill recruit Michael Knoll can help ease the distress of losing co-captain Keegan Brooksby to West Coast.

Knoll has played in the VFL for just two years after switching from basketball and he will provide the Panthers with an imposing presence in the ruck, being 205cm and 100kg.

The Panthers announced Knoll, who trained with the club last week, as a signing following a “mad scramble” to replace Brooksby.

“We were surprised Keegan got the call up,” Panthers coach Jarrad Wright said. “It was not surprising after the year he had and he had a right to get another opportunity.

“But there had been no communication with AFL clubs on him and without planning to lose him, it was a mad scramble to try and find a suitable replacement.“Michael trained with us last week so we had a real good look at him, plus we watched some game tapes. He had been on the radar with a few clubs and is going to develop a lot more getting game time.”

Knoll, 25, played college basketball in the US for four years before opting to test himself in football.

He joined Box Hill in 2017 and was an emergency for this year’s VFL grand final. The Hawks already had Marc Pittonet, who played two AFL games this season, in the side.

“He has played limited football, but he is a good athlete and his football craft is pretty sound,” Wright said. “I’m confident in what he can potentially produce when working with Nick Liddle, Joel Cross, Abe Davis, Emmanuel Irra and Malcolm Karpany in the midfield.”

Another year in the TAC Cup coming up for Dandenong Stingrays premiership ruckman Riley Bowman - at the Sandringham Dragons as a 19-year-old. Will spend more time as a key forward. Meanwhile fellow Rays graduates Sam Fletcher and Jake Frawley are training at Box Hill Hawks.

From Draft central:

16 Jake FRAWLEY

A strong midfielder who can play out of full-forward such is his strength one-on-one or in the air. Booted six goals against against Bendigo Pioneers at Shepley Oval playing almost exclusively as a forward. He adds some depth to the midfield and his versatility is important when the big day rolls around.

1 Sam Fletcher

Ball magnet during the grand final always finds a way to get the footy in his hands. Pretty good by foot in his sides win, having a massive 11 disposals in the opening term, and 18 by half-time. Won more than half of his touches on the inside, and just worked hard all day long. Finished the day with a sore shoulder and blood down his face and jumper – his second jumper of the day, having to change from the number one, to the number 61 in the second half.

Box Hill will turn to its next wave of talent this season after farewelling half of the list that helped it win last year’s VFL premiership.
Fifteen of the 33-listed Hawks from last year have departed the state league club, leaving it to appoint a new leadership group for 2019.
Captain Andrew Moore is the only member from last year’s leadership group remaining at Box Hill City Oval.

The premiership trio of Anthony Brolic (Rowville), Mitch O’Donnell (Norwood) and Chris Jones (South Croydon) will return to the Eastern Football League, while Max Warren and Nick Evans have also joined at the Bulldogs.
Former Essendon midfielder Will Hams has run pen over paper at VAFA club Old Xaverians and Billy Murphy has relocated to Queensland.

Box Hill expects to finalise its list this week.

According to Paul Amy; Sam Fletcher and Jake Frawley have signed from the Dandenong Stingrays 2018 TAC Cup Premiers. He has high hopes for Fletcher in 2019!

Practice match schedule. All the games are away.
Sunday 3rd March at Footscray 12:00pm clashes with the JLT
Saturday 9th March at Richmond 12:00pm
Saturday 23rd March at Casey time TBA likely clash with AFL
Saturday 30th March at Werribee 2:00pm.

Box Hill never plays pre-season practice matches at Box Hill City Oval, as the venue is typically used for cricket finals (although cricket finals are typically done by mid-March).

This link only seems to mention 2 of those...

Are the others definite? Normally Box Hill puts the schedule on their website, but not so far this year.

I received the practice match schedule directly from the BHH. From a parent today I was advised the Footscray practice match has been moved to 11:00 am due to the hot weather forecast and it will only involve BHH listed players.
The VFL sites incomplete practice match schedule and ins and outs list is amateur rubbish. Yet another error is Jordan Walker was not on the BHH list in 2018.
From what I hear others to leave include Jeffs, Knoll, Davies, Sakeson, Osborne and Groves. Given the little information provided by the VFL surely they could be more accurate:thumbsdown:.

gaining Sam Fletcher(Dand) and Luke Meadows(WAFL) are 2 great midfield signings

losing O'Donnell who i thought was unlucky not to get drafted, he was toughness personified and losing Hams who has been one of the best players for BHH over the last few years has hurt the squad as well as losing Jones and Brolic 2 really talented players who have struggled with injuries a bit the last couple of seasons, Billy Murphy was also good as a goal sneak the last few seasons too.

i was hoping we would sign Jake Gasper (Oakleigh) but Port Melbourne signed him, dammit

yeah forgot billy murphy moved on,thats a shame because he played some great games,we will also miss Jones who could pluck a nice mark occasionly.

As an aside, does the exodus show that experiencing premiership success was a big motivating factor for these blokes? They could probably all have earned more elsewhere, but they all stuck around until the flag was won?

A very good question. My guess is the departing players thought they had reached the summit of their achievement and also acknowledged their dreams of playing in the AFL had closed so they were content to move on. In the suburban leagues good VFL players will earn between $1,000 and $2,000 a game and the time spent training is greatly reduced.

I've been told Killa is sticking around and the list should be finalised next week but based on past years I wont be holding my breath.
