We have valued versatility in the past but at times to our detriment IMHO - on the one hand we have specialist backmen but we expect our mids to also play forward and have largely relied on these types to kick our goals ( Hawk excluded)
The one consistent exception was Menzel who , whilst limited defensively, managed to find the stick more often than not when fit.
Maybe it's time to pick a few permanent small or mid sized forwards rather than rely on playing 8 or so mids who can rest forward and play on ball ?

I find it hard to like this comment enough!!! Can we please have some forwards who kick goals first and we can work on the other stuff!!

His talent scouts at ER always said he is a classic winger, even hbf.
He has good size about him, and footy smarts.
I really feel he went into his shell too much after copping that Hodge suspension.

Btw, that Polec comparison I felt was very applicable to Murdoch as well. I do believe Parsons has more footy smarts than Murdoch, but Murdoch has the acceleration.
I'm not sure Parsons will get selected mate. I just found him skirting the outside of our bin and threw him back over the fence.

I don't think Murdoch was much like Polec.
Only speed but that's it , breaking lines and tackles with ball in hand was not really a skill he had.
Not a very natural, instinctive player.
Think Parsons could maybe do that, could do it a bit in the VFL in his first year.

Paying members shouldn't get special treatment?

But the average fan with a limited budget trying to stave off people trying to make their offspring Eagles or Dockers should be shut out? Free entry to the game is the members benefit.

Maybe, not sure what their thinking is.
But Members quite often complain that they don't get their money's worth.
But no-one's getting more! Just something no-one had to pay for before, you definitely don't get unless you pay for it.

Come on mate. Miers is a small forward, he doesn't need to have versatility. That's the club's problem ... trying to play players in positions they aren't suited to. It will have no bearing on whether he's selected or not.

I’d rather a master of one position, than a jack of all trades who isn’t that good at any of them.

So I am sure someone will have said this already but NO INJURIES PLEASE!! Or at least no significant ones

You are probably correct, but it seems AFL is all about role players AND versatility, playing anywhere there is a need. CS and most coaches believe in that. You wouldn't want to call De Goey just a small forward, or Stephenson, and Miers will need to be able to play as a mid at times for his and the team's benefit, like Parfitt.
Not that you rate him at all, but your point could be relevant to Parsons- he never played as a small forward before but was asked to.

My only problem with Parsons is he's scared on contact and doesn't put his body on the line. I can see some talent and ability but he lacks desire. It's a big year for him as far as I'm concerned. He needs to overcome his fear, and quickly.

This may be inaccurate, but I liken him to a kid that gets caught speeding while on P's and loses his licence. Parsons played with a lot of aggression and vigour that first game against Hodge, and that suspension so early on in his career- and we all recall he looked great that day- may have made him think about his game. Who knows, but contact and desire would not have been his weak areas when drafted.

Not the exact same thing but Rocky Cranston has talked about how being suspended for a sling tackle made her think she would just try and avoid tackling in her first game back... and she is by nature a physical player.

Not saying this is necessarily true about Parsons, who should honestly be well and truly over any such reservations by now but I could see it being a factor.

Scott has apparently stated that the object of the JLT for Geelong will be player fitness oriented, rather than winning. Or words to that effect.
But sometimes it's hard for players to avoid getting a dose of white line fever.

I'm not of the opinion Parsons is contact shy, not any more than any others that is.

I''ve seen him fly for marks accepting heavy contact in the process so l certainly wouldn't consider him contact shy.
Contact that spun him in the air no less.

IMO for a career changer he needs more weight on his frame, his weight to height ratio disadvantages him a little to much.
Unlike Hawkins or Dangerfield he's of the type needing more weight to be a better player imo.
He's a lot like Zac Guthrie in that he strugges to hold position against heavier guys and gets pushed around to much.
Three or four kilos could be all he needs to transform his game to be a best 22 player.

You have seen him more than I ..

but I feel you describe a guy who normally drives at 59K's ph in a 60k zone ... yet on getting a new car get excited and puts his foot down and gets booked for speeding .. or worse. So it just reinforces to him that he acted like an idiot.. and now falls back to his norm but now travels at 55-57 kph.

A guy who is naturally aggresive and contact being a normal part of his game , id say getting reported for hurting someone and having the odd week off is probably .more just the cost of doing business. Lets take Mummy for an example . Do you think Mummy was put off by creaming Duncans butter? No it put a spring in his step. Sure that type of player might just check themselves a tad after a suspension I think it would be like telling a dog not to bark to take the mongrel totally out Mumford's game.

To me the physical stuff is almost irrelevant for Parsons. I dont think thats where he will make or break his career at afl level. He has to use his pace and skill, he has to kick goals and make the most of chances .. does he have a left foot.. cause a player like would find it handy. Motlop seemed to find a way around it but I still hold with the GA Sr approach that kids should be trained on both sides. Can he leap ..cant say I can remember him taking a high mark.

Imo , basically his spot and style is a direct head to head with Rohan. Rohan has those attributes but is no perfect player either... and is there a spot for both of them? If Parsons is good enough.. but atm he just has not shown that he has the next level obviously in him.

Rohan is best 22. He's not competing with anyone. He's one of the rare few who gives 100%, he's one of the rare few with elite speed and he's one of the rare few who applies elite pressure. All areas we're lacking in.

Was that his first game? Can't recall exactly how he played overall in terms of aggression but I did think the elbow to Hodge was a cheap shot at the time.
In any event I think we got ahead of ourselves with Parsons - he should have come back through the 2's after that act of ill discipline IMO
Then we kept playing him for far too long after sub par performances - that would have knocked his confidence badly - we did the same with Zuthrie
I really like Cunico on a wing but could see Parsons having the attributes to play there as well - good luck to him , new season fresh start

Every one competes with everyone... but in the type of words from animal farm there are some who have to compete harder than others..

Rohan has been brought into the club... cant see that being done to play 2's

My point was Parsons to me is a player like Rohan but has not reached Rohan's level yet ..but their stats are not that far away from each other. I think Rohans probably got more X factor ( whatever that means) , is probably quicker ands the marks inside 50, contested marks tilts it Rohan's way on stats.
I dont see Parsons a Rooke..if he is to see success it thru Rohans type of attribute that I think Parsons has to exhibit. ... and Rohan having been brought in probably means he misses till Rohan is injured or he elevate his performance

Has he got any though - there was a game at the MCG last year - it might have been against Haw - and he got badly beaten for pace - every time he went for the ball

I think the trouble with Parsons ( some supporters opinion of him ) is they rate him on that class goal he kicked against Ess 2 seasons back - just like Cowan who kicked a 65 metre goal off 1 step in QLD - and Kersten taking that 1 handed mark in his 1st practise game - you think they are going to be something special but they are not
