I didn't see it, but the old man rang me soon after and said this kids a real talent. He's nearly 95, but he's a good judge of a footballer.

Saw it straight away. Not many medium forwards have the leap and strength to take pack marks at 18. His first aerial contest in the middle of a pack, ferken bang!

Get excited.

Timmy was very good
I thought glass was also good turned it over but running to the right spots to receive providing an option. Conditions were tough.

Cuz was great he is finishing his work a lot better.

Morrison a bit dissapointing.

Golds will be a player

Pitt tried hard but beaten just about everywhere.

Love CJ he is just an excitement machine. I think he will come close to getting a game this year

Walker's fitness base is whats holding him back

Mirra once again serviceable

Scrimshaw like what i saw needs refinement a few games at box hill to learn

All in all quite a solid hit out by our young players.

Best Players on the ground imo:
Sicily - could've kicked 5 goals, a little sloppy at goal, but was a strong focus up forward and gave us a marking target we have lacked the last few years.
Ceglar - he just tried all day and played that link up role in the mid also kicked a goal, so ticked all the boxes
Impey - first half he tried to create counter attack and was constantly putting his body on the line, brave and respectable game
Mirra - i read a few people in this thread pot him, but he was our only defender contesting high balls in the first half, he covered Brand and Mohrs butt more than once, he might have made an error or 2 but he was covering our other under-performing defensive unit imo
Cousins - didnt like his early output but as the game went on he got into the game and ended with 29 poss, mostly not wasted either
Nash - every quarter put in effort and got some reward, he has improved during the pre-season and he is kind've a scuffed Buddy type, without the long range goal kicking ability
Lewis - played CHF very well, goaless again which would be bothering him internally, played that high CHF role well, just needs to get on the scoreboard, but i think he set up a couple of goals or so?
Jiath - his last half performance was solid, he spoiled, he contested, he used the ball well, he did everything that you want from a defender (got his goal robbed when it was suspiciously called touched)
Greaves* - i liked his run and carry and looked like he belonged, didnt make many if any mistakes, had some nice inside 50's good signs
Golds* - didnt realise he got 25 poss, but he was important to us in the 2nd half, usually running and finding a team mate, also impressive debut, Sicily going for the mark on the goal line and ruining a goal that wouldve been the cherry on the top of a great game

players who were average:
O'Brien - took 4 good marks, but he also turned the ball over and fobbed at times, good and bad moments
Morrison - worked hard and played fairly well, but as usual, doesnt get enough of the ball and influence the game enough at times
Miles - mostly played well, but not well enough to be in the bests
Worpel - did a lot right, but his disposal was sloppy and got a bit frustrated at times, like his effort not the end result
D.Moore - great goal from outside 50, but was quiet and running after the ball all day, not a good performance from him
Ross - similar to Moore, great snap from the boundary late in the game, but was chasing all day and getting nowhere
Jones - his weight is an issue when he plays inside mid, he is a battler, but i would rather see him play off half back, his inside mid play has a bit to work on
Hanrahan - battled all day, but his impact on the game itself felt small, needed to kick a goal or tackle hard or something
Walker* - that mark 20m out was a special moment, but had little impact after that moment unfortunately (definately potential) and like what others have said a Tony Hall look-a-like, the way he marks and physique

players who i felt played poorly
Brand - i felt as if most defenders were covering him, he looked out of breath in the first quarter and didnt really impact the game except for a couple of moments when he left the tall forw he was on at the time.
Glass - oh boy, mistakes, errors, running into a tackler, its frustrating watching him play sometimes...
Pittonet - as a ruckmen he is VFL quality, but just lacks the ability needed to play AFL, will dominate at BHH again this year
Scrimshaw* - he got a few poss, but i cant remember him making a positive impact with any of them, maybe i missed a play or 2?
Mohr* - he tried, but he would have to be a worse Frawley, big body defender with limited ability.

Saw bits of the 1st and 3rd qtrs and saw some positive pieces of play. will get a better feel next week against the tiges when we will play a more seasoned side

I spoke sharply about him last season, but I'm very pleased to hear TO'B played well today.

Might quit my job and offer to go down to Waverly and teach Nash how to kick.. could be anything if he gets that right
I was actually thinking / hoping that maybe Ben Dixon would get in contact with the club about maybe doing some one on one coaching with him. Dicko did some work with Levi Casboult and got him to the point where he was decent which speaks volumes. If anyone here knows Dicko then plant the seed to make this happen.

After today’s game he will play Round 1. Cousins has been the standout perfomer for Hawthorn during the pre-season and is likely to be Mitchell’s replacement.

Agreed. Has very much put his name at the top of the list.

TOB did some ok things today and yeah was serviceable but really given his age he should be dominating these games but didn't. Only Sis going forward will a spot open for TOB in the backline but I just cant see him making it his and his alone.

Will Cousins get serious midfield time once the established players have returned? Or should today be treated solely as a once off?
As a swans supporter, the only thing you need to know about Cousins is that the swans tried to pry him away from us this offseason. He said no yo the offer and said he wanted to stay and fight for his spot. The kid has talent and can be anything if he puts the work in.

What you really want from a game like this is 3 or 4 players to really put their hand up and announce themselves as worthy for selection.

Add Hardwick, Stratton, Frawley, Sicily to the backline that played today
Add Smith, Shiels, O'Meara, Burgoyne, Henderson, Wingard and McEvoy to that midfield
Add Gunston, Breust, Roughead and Puopolo to that forwardline...

Then really you only need 1 young defender to stand up (Brand and/or Scrimsshaw)
1 or 2 midfielders (Cousins, Golds)
a forward (Nash, Walker or Moore)

And the club has gotten what they want out of today.
A highly successful outing I think.
This is the best comment on this thread by a country mile. The only thing you needed to include was the eventual inclusions of Birchall and Scully. Other than that spot on.

The reason for my question only related to whether he gets into my Dream team or not. :) I didn't realise the Swans chased after him last year.

Not much really.
The game played out like a perfect script. Bris was IMO expected to win by between by 6 to 10 goals. I wasn't interested in them as much as I was our young side. Our mids performed well but obviously tired but never looked to give up at any time. As our mids tired the pressure on our backline increased but to their credit they resisted admirably as best they could, udermaned and all. TOB not our worst just so far from our best was my observation

Thanks everyone - much appreciated
Sounds like everyone had a good hit out - blew the cobwebs out.

Is there another round of JLT where we’ll see the main line up or at least those available

Will be a good option mate, will 100% be given first crack at Titches roll and is at a good price.

Tiggers down in Tassie, OTC.
We have been pitted against the two teams we can't beat! :p

Take it as a compliment that as opposition fans that we respect who the swans go after. Just like Hawthorn, the Swans haven’t got too many wrong over the last decade. Long story short though definitely put Cousins in your DT because I know I am. As each day passes he’s looking like a shoe in to eat up most of Mitchell’s minutes.

You missed the point, he was Hipwood's opponent and Hipwood did absolutely nothing. Timmy on the other hand went at very good efficiency by foot, hardly turned the ball over and took 3 contested marks where he guarded his space well against his opponent and read the flight better. Considering they had 63 inside 50s, I'd say Timmy did dominate as much as a key defender can.
