Review JLT 2 vs North Melbourne

Boak - he is looking very very good this year. I’ve known that from the first five minutes I saw him. He looks faster and his kicking has much more depth lol. It’s like he found a magic potion

Rockliff - the rocky we paid for.
So good around the ball but his marking around the ground was the big thing I noticed. Like having another ruckman around the ground to take marks.

Lycett - huge in all areas. People have spoken about him and nailed it.

Byrne Jones - bit disappointing start to the year until today when he seemed to be in everything. Not sure what he was doing different but 25d and 2 goals is great. The kid that sits under the ball and goes into packs recklessly was back.

Duursma- amazed that he found so much of the ball. That bodes well for the lad. His hands were poor and double touched a lot of touches. Still needs to get some belief which could come with some time but some good signs. I’m not sure I’m playing him round one just yet but I’m pleased with some of the stuff I’ve seen.

Watts - playing on the wing and dropping back. Found lots of it. I’m still wary as he has teased us then gone missing so much but was good.

Houston - I thought Houston was excellent. Think he took a step up defensively. The kid who was a good kick that added the intercept marking maybe looks to have taken a step up in 1 on 1 defense.

SPP - Only got 16 touches but he was so damaging and influential when he did get it.

Clurey - improved performance defensively and with the ball. Still worried about him from game to game. Still some shaky moments in game.

Jonas - improved from horror of last week. Still shaky.

Amon - Laid the best tackle of the day. Is like a different player this year. 14d but he played less than half the game looking at his time on ground stats. I think his form is better than the fancied motlop right now.

Drew - the biggest surprise packet of the jlt. Only 16d today but lots of smart contests. His attempt to spoil Ben brown who was sitting under a ball after someone’s shit kick resulted in us kicking a goal 30 seconds later when Ben could have been setting up a north goal. Drew had no right to make that spoil with his back to the ball on one of the best overhead markers in the game and he does it without giving away a free. Special.

Butters - It may be early but I’m completely sold. I don’t just think he is ports best young prospect I think he is one of the leagues best prospects. He goes in hard. He wins the ball. For a guy who was supposed to be an outside player he wins it as good as you could ask. He uses the ball better than most of our seasoned pros. I’m in love. Round 1.

Rozee- has some brilliant moments and lots of gaps where you forget he is put there. He is a long term project but he looks like a future gun. That mark that wasn’t paid was brilliant. Had some brilliant tackles. Someone at the club rates him because he was at some centre bounces. No part of me thinks that Rozee possibly can’t make it as a really good footballer. It’s just a matter of how long it takes him to go from flashes of brilliance to consistently performing. Because of his tackling I think Hinkley will try to fast track him and give him lots of opportunities.

Marshall - some good stuff but not involved as much as we want. Still lots of good signs and lots of almost things that will start falling when he gets another preseason and 20’games under his belt. People are forgetting he is copping a seasoned afl defender (or 2) every week right now with Dixon out. The best thing is he always keeps his feet after marking contests.

Ebert - didn’t particularly do anything wrong and competed and used the ball ok without being damaging but that’s a really really low bar to set for one of our most senior players out there. Getting out performed by 1st and 2nd year players right now.

Gray - had 20d and 2 goals but I barely noticed him. Played forward almost all day.

Bonner - looked good with ball in hand, moving and streaming forward and kicking. If he was even remotely near an opponent all game I didn’t see it and that worries me. Teams figure out how to expose that stuff.

Not a big game by Rozee but you can tell he’s got the capability to tear games apart. He was that close to taking mark of the day. A great leap above a pack only to not hold the chest mark long enough (Rioli would have been paid the mark)

Early days but I have a feeling Ebert could be shipped out of at the end of the year. Reminds me of Trengove in 2017.

With that being said though, the club will want him at the club next year for the whole 150th year thing.

At the end of next season I can see Ebert being moved on.

Not sure what went on but Robbie took a bit of dislike towards Jasper, edit it was Polly, at one stage. Gave away a free and Jasper (Polly) patted him on the backside. At the next contest Robbie had another go.

Positives:

Hard to tell from tv but I felt like I saw a game-plan that actually made sense - strive your hardest to win the ball forward from 6-6-6 CB and either score or lock the ball in with great pressure - but ONLY in the forward half. We pressured the ball-carrier really well but only really in attacking 50 or the forward half, if they got through it looked like we were playing a more typical structure in the back-half by backing off a bit and zoning up more rather than overcommitting.

If the ball does end up in our back half we try rebound way more aggressively than last year and our ball movement and was a step up from last week - but I have no idea what the Roos were actually doing. Watching on tv it looked like they were too far away from our defenders trying to kick the ball up field.

Rockliff, DBJ and Butters :eggplant:
Watts backed up with another decent game across half-back

Negatives:

We had another couple of middling to poor quarters (1st and 4th) of contested footy like last week except unlike the 2nd quarter against the Crows we were able to break-even with North. I'm not sure what specific areas of the contest we're letting ourselves down in but if we keep this up against better sides we'll have a few scores racked up against us. Melbourne specifically were extremely good in contested footy last season (before the prelim final) so if they get on top of us, it could be hard for us to stop.

Injuries to Lienert and Ryder
Ebert was pretty meh

It's going to be an interesting game against Melbourne in Rd 1, looking forward to it.

6-6-6 is the best thing the AFL has done for footy in years.. Opens the game right up, puts the game back firmly in the hands of the footballers and their skills and not a bunch of clowns in the coaches box doing their best to run the sport with their negative crap.
Try to play a silly zone off game and you will get torched, awesome for the game.
The best sides are going to be the disciplined ones that realize you have an opponent to beat, now beat him, not find a space hold your zone etc... So effing good for the game.

Any news on Lienert?

Injured early but thought he was really struggling up to that point. Always seems a step behind his direct opponent. I don’t think he plays round 1.

Knee medial strain, 2-4 weeks.

A number of people here last week were saying Rocky was cooked as a footballer....

Happy to say I wasn't one. Has had a great pre-season. Needs to get some consistency but a performance like this proves he's still got it.

The Kangaroos basically laid a record low tackles for the game so he was able to get alot of uncontested footy. Still think he's absolutely golden for 30+ week in and out if the body holds up. He's hugely important this year. Particularly early with Wines out (and maybe affected by the shoulder for the whole year.)

I would love to see the stats for teams / times that players get over 35 touches, gut feel says we would be bottom or very close, which is just really the symptom of us not playing 4 quarters.

Enjoying the new game plan and the excitement and inevitable frustration that this sort of change will bring, particularly with the rule changes.

..... Atmosphere was great. Especially when we were getting screwed with shit umpiring
Umpiring was generally pretty good. That weird 100m stuff notwithstanding. Always some odd decisions. One of the worst benefited us early on when a Port kick for goal sailed over the goalpost to be called a goal.

A good outing, a positive performance but still some question marks.

Giving up 6 goals in 8 minutes is not pretty. At all. That to go with the performance through the 2nd quarter last week and there is plenty to work on. Not just the midfield group because momentum can happen, but for the 2nd week in a row the defensive group were utter crap for a 10 minute period and were totally incapable of stopping that momentum.

Thank god for SPP and Rocky who combined well to wrestle the momentum back in our favour.

The things I wanted at the start of the day were some more cohesive ball movement and something resembling a forward line. I think we got to see both today. Our ball movement was a lot better. Quicker but also smarter. Our forward line looked better. More options, some decent marking options and the smalls did their job well.

Player Reviews:
Lienert - Was very poor before getting injured. Needs to play loose to make the most of his positive traits. I don't think he's suited to being a more defensive player.

Rozee - Quiet but effective when he got it. Happy for him to play Round 1 as it won't be long before he has a real breakout game. Plenty to work with both in terms of talent, and for him personally in working harder to stay in games longer

Ryder - Was a star in the ruck and was a large reason why we won the game. Provided zero around the ground though

SPP - His first quarter was amazing. He's going to excite us this year with a more open centre midfield. He did fall out of the game a bit but he did just enough through the other quarters, especially defensively, for his to be a good accomplished performance. Very good.

Butters - Can't really add anything different to what has already been said. He's got it all. Last week was as a creative midfield option. This week as a goal scoring forward. Gun.

Marshall - His game was much better than last week but still needs to provide more of an effort in the air. Overall not a bad game

Burton - I actually really liked his game. He is playing more of a defensive leaning role compared to what he did at the Hawks but I thought he was really good. Professional performance.

Drew - Good when he got the ball and I liked his positioning again but wasn't as good as last week. Has he done enough to get a game in Round 1, even if Ollie plays? Not sure. He's close. Very close.

Amon - Thought Byron laid some massive tackles today. Where did that come from? I've said a few times, a spot is there if he wants it enough. All signs so far have said yes, he wants that spot. 2 very good games.

Duursma - Gets himself in good position to receive. 24 touches, 11 marks is great numbers. Yes he showed some of what I didn't like last year in him. Just needs to be more decisive when he has the ball. Still think he plays Round 1.

Watts - Will be interesting to see what we do here when Dixon comes back. Will Westhoff go back into this role and where does that leave Jack? Thought he's played 2 very good games in that defensive midfield/sweepers role. He is well suited to it because he does use the ball exceptionally well and he's a great size. I think we'll see him in this role all year.

Lycett - Thought his ruck work was poor, but was very good around the ground this week. Couple of goals, some good grabs, got involved more. Just needs to instruct the midfielders where he is going to tap the ball more as its off at the moment

Motlop - I really hope he can play like this more often than not this year. We need him to. Was outstanding I thought. Very very good defensively

DBJ - Some murmurs here about whether he stays in or drops out and he delivers that knock out performance. Brilliant

Boak - Very good for the second week in a row. Not much more to be said. Loved how he played

Rockliff - Pleeeaasse let us see this most weeks this year.
