Carlton was prepared to close down space which forced Collingwood into lots of short kicks to keep possession.

It would appear so. In which case can we now move on from the "Bolts is weak tactically" BS.
I KNOW its only a JLT, but for our players who are so young, to stop probably the strongest midfield going around, from dominating /doing as they pleased, is a huge effort

Put it this way.

Krooz could trip over his dressing gown next week, and we could have Phillips as first ruck for the next 6 months.

Would rather look at the positives he can offer, than a dismantling of what he cannot, 10 days before Round One.

I thank you in advance.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, go all in on Grundy end of next year as a free agent. Don’t bother spending Kelly type crazy money on Kelly or Coniglio, our midfield just needs games and time.

The best ruckman in the comp and plays a position we will need to replace soonish, he’s an upgrade on Kreuzer in game play and his ability to get on the park.
I really think TDK is going to be an absolute superstar and I think he will come on quicker than what people think just like Grundy did.

In my opinion Bolts showed today more than ever he knows what he is doing....and took us up a notch in structure and effort in the last quarter.... played off them in the first three. So yes of course they had a million posessions. But.......Scoreboard is the only stat worth anything in the end and we went close to stomping them when they were trying desperately to hold us out and couldn't match our zip at the end.

One of the things you do better with more experience is cheat

That's actually true. The best and most experienced teams/players do know how to make 50-50 situations go their way. A little extra strength and guile makes a difference. As does a reputation (*whistle* free kick, Luke Shuey, holding off the ball!)

Our squad will get better at this.

I’d be tempted to bring Casboult for McGovern, who’s ridiculously underdone.

Still only cameos from Polson too, who probably makes way for Fasolo.
2 talls [Mckay and Charlie] and Fasolo if fit for mine as you said Mcgovern isn't fit and shouldn't be played seniors if so .
Id like to see more run in our forwardline playing an extra small for now imo would be more beneficial than a struggling Mcgovern or Casboult .

I think that if we look objectively at the full pre-season we can see the completely obvious;

Our regular posters who have agendas against certain players are in excellent form. I imagine that certain players (e.g Marc Murphy, Andrew Phillips and Cameron Polson) may die of internet flagellation this year.

Heaven only help us if Levi were to get back into the team on a regular basis.

Not sure why Phillips is the focus here.

We just played against, in my opinion, the best list in the league, and should have won. Make no mistakes they had a fair crack today and didn't rest their stars. Our forward line didn't function, we did not use the ball well going forward and pies had the rub of the green with the umpires.

I'm absolutely pumped with what I saw today and if you weren't then I suggest you re-evaluate your expectations for this year.

Can we focus on the positives people? Yes, Phillips is not our ideal starting ruck. Polson is a work in progress. Murphy butchers the ball and is a shadow of his 2011 self. But there are way more positives to look at! Finally we have a high performance guru who gets our talent on the park. They're fit and confident with a desire to improve. 2019 will be an exciting ride but only if you allow it to be.

It needs repeating.......

The best part is we played our best at the end..honing in on the real stuff Bart Cummings style

I think we’re fine for smalls in the forwardline. We’re often pushing an extra mid up and rotating Dow, Fisher and Murphy through the flanks.

McGovern would be benefit from getting some touch in the 2s, and Casboult is an adequate placeholder.

I think the young mids did well winning the ball, but just cannot cover the ground like the Pies lineup can - and their midfield is probably league best.

Post Q1 adjustments were good. Cuningham looks sharp and useful. Even Polson showed some toe and pressure - wish he had a nose for the goals though.

Ed will be in the middle come round 1, with a job. SPS looks to have made some big strides.

Charlie was not great, and McLovin generally woeful, but big H presented and came good. Would love him to kick a big bag this year - I can see him having a day where everything sticks and he's genuinely the most lethal forward out there.

Some sides will definitely split us open this year. But if we compete and stay in more games and scrounge out some results, progress will be made and progress is enough. Pies are a very good side, so a good showing today.

Is it just me, or is the Amos led defence standing up like they did in his first 2 years? They dont look the slickest defence out there but they somehow do themselves proud and stop big scores. Back then we had no forward line and no midfield. If the defence can keep it together -especially with the return of Marchbank and Williamson, then we have something to build on

For all those knocking Phillips who I thought competed well against one of the premier ruckmen ask yourself about Murphy’s performance (some of which have Murph in their name or profile pic)

Handballs to stationary targets half a metre away, woeful use of the football shadow of him former self

McGovern was genuinely taking the piss for the first three quarters but good to see him pull his finger out and get involved in the last, suspect we'll see a much more switched on player in Round 1.

Charlie was putrid but I don't think it's anything to be concerned about whatsoever, I think he's also eyeing off Round 1.

Jones was amazing and is looking really solid, looks set for a really strong season. Weitering also very good.

Loved SPS's game. Fisher worked into it strongly after an average first half.

Cripps looked to be going through the motions somewhat today but was still a standout contributor.

The scoreboard definitely flattered us, felt like Collingwood were just toying with us for extended periods of the match.

Plowman looms as a huge problem if selected in Round 1 (and let's face it, given no Marchbank/Docherty/Williamson he almost certainly will be). Looked like he'd never played a game of football in his life at times today.

Bang on about Plowman. I was at the game today and some of his efforts were abysmal. Seemed clueless as to how to defend or maybe it was just that he was physically unable to. Until he contested the mark with Grundy on the wing in the last quarter and ended up with the free and kicked the goal, every one of his contributions to the game was to the Magpie's advantage.

I get that Cam Polson tries hard but his disposal and composure is not at the required level. Butchered several well won opportunities to either score or pass the ball effectively to other forwards.

Marc Murphy cruises around, gets a lot of cheap possession but is very wasteful. We need a lot more from him.

Hats off to Paddy Dow. Looked all at sea early. But came out and played a solid second half. Would like him to take the game on more but appears to lack the fitness.

Everyone else made good contributions, some more than others of course. Backline bar Plowman was good although Newman seemed a bit off. Midfield battled away and the forward line would be better served with better delivery and better leading. We're getting chances inside 50 but we need to capitalise better on our forward entries.

Heres an idea..when knocking others for knocking a player..dont add to it
Murphy is such an easy target...have a look again ...you will see Cripps stuff up the simple stuff several times....then see Murph at the bottom of packs

SpS and Dow 11 contested as well much better spread than Cripps having 20.

It was noticeable we looked far tougher and fitter than last year.

Which helps us to stick tackles and strangle the opposition...last year opposition teams were breaking our tackles with ease.

Many games last year where our players looked lost and confused.

So far in JLT at least our players look far more assured of what they're supposed to be doing and our midfield is gelling quite well. Ball movement has been decent.

The only lack of cohesion i'm seeing is amongst the forwards and the midfield/forward connection with the inside F50 kick isn't quite there yet.
But everything else looks pretty good so far.

Plowman is an interesting one. If we had everyone fit he would be squeezed out of my 22.

He is best 22 at the moment but thats due to injuries.

Simpson Jones Newman
Marchbank Weitering Doc

With Willo as the 7th defender.

If Plowman is pushed out of the side then we are in bloody good nick.

I dont see room for Jones, Weitering, Plowman and Marchbank in one team.

If either Marchbank or Willo get fit and in good form, i'd have them in for Plowman. I think they both offer more.

We always want the best and can get emotional through the game itself, but what you point out looks to be true.

Exiting the backline is also somewhat stifled at times and without doubt we're missing the marshall down back in Docherty, but there seems to be growing cohesion as weeks roll on, allowing Newman & Garlett to slowly get used to the operation.

Collingwood mids today seemed to know instinctively where their team-mates were, whereas we had to look and wonder at times.
That's simply a matter of playing minutes together and understanding the game-plan and each others' moves. Just takes time. No shortcuts.
