Doedee, Rance and now it looks like young Vickers-Willis will all miss the rest of the season with serious knee injuries.
Has this ever happened before?
Absolutely brutal game.

I remember Dempsey and Winderlich going down with ACL's within 10 minutes of each other for us once.

Meniscus damage is much more common than an acl I think, most scopes remove floating or damaged meniscus. Pcl’s are more of an impact injury, medials generally require a wrenching inwards action to damage it. When I did my acl I had hoped it was an lcl cause I felt it more on the outside of my knee but the physio said lcl and pretty rare and generally u damage the acl in the process. Acls are from twists or a sliding of the tibia that snaps the ligament, there’s so many high speed turns and awkward landings it’s a surprise there’s not more

It's strange to me why the knee injuries all seem to be acl tears? What about mcl? Pcl ? Lcl? Meniscus? Why is acl so much more common?
The ACL is both A) a weaker muscle and B) more susceptible to damage due to the leg movements and such during play in a game of footy.

PCL is stronger and isnt going to be coping much damage short of a player squatting and then getting their shin kicked in. ACLs generally go because they’re under weight when a player is upright and the parts of the knee they connect go seperate ways.

I remember hearing someone over the weekend say that they tend to happen earlier in the season. Might have been a physio on the radio, if anyone else heard it let me know.
This. Happens just about every year a few people do their knees in the opening rounds. Then some you go the rest of the season and don't see a single one in a game.

Something about the bodies getting readjusted to the gameplay or something.

And the rest of the ligaments and cartlidge?

There always seems to be more at the start of the season, maybe the players bodies aren’t as conditioned as they are in the middle of the year, maybe it’s theat the grounds are harder?

I did a quick search, the two reasons seem to be;
Bodies adjusting to the lift in tempo from training to playing games, and also playing on grounds that are hot and dry in football boots means better traction, so when tired players try to change directed there is no give at all.

Of the 3 injured they are all backmen right? Less protection from their team mates = more ACL's from one on ones
Wasn't Rance's team mate right next to him in the same marking contest? Rance tried to change direction in mid air to follow the ball and then landed at a bad angle.

Rance did his because he dropped the mark and had to turn dramatically to recover, he actually was very fumbly on the night, so I guess first game of the season tiredness and lack of match touch contributed to his.
