The Footy Show's 2019 format revealed (and other Nine AFL stuff)

Ratings are now dire.
Diving to new lows.

Salient lesson that will ofcourse never be learnt:
You can’t give a no talent ordinary media type (in this case Lemmo) a main gig and think it will just happen.

Why oh why to they persist with regurgitating ordinary types. Do in media all the time.

How much longer until the show gets the axe? Seems like it's on life-support now.
Not sure they have even put the plug in.

Yeah, The Lehmo thing was just asking for trouble.
He was a passenger on Before the Game to give contrast to the ones that actually had talent. He has none. So weird to think he should front anything.

They will give it to the end of the year. Sam and Ed's 'specials' might even decent ratings given it will be seen as a welcome change to the current crap plus the yearning for the old days factor. This revamp was the last chance and it looks like it has already failed. You can't keep changing year after year - which they have done since Garry left - and expect to keep your viewership.

I am shocked to be sitting here

I am not going to defend the current "Footy Show" at all. They should have used a different name, and made it a different "footy program" with no links to the FS.

As far as I am concerned, the Footy Show 1993-2018.

But a lot of people here overrate "The Front Bar". I have watched it, and Mick Molloy and Sam Pang are hilarious, and I like the clips.

But I wonder how much of the hype is based on its own merit, and how much is based on it supposedly "being better than the Footy Show".

I think TFB's format can't sustain long-term. All it is is Andy Maher, Mick Molloy and Sam Pang talking to players from the past, and showing clips. The format is exactly the same every week. It works now, but ten years from now, that will be get stale and boring. Also, I have noticed that the show's success is 100% dependent on Molloy and Pang. Take one of them away, and it isn't as funny. Remove both, and the show is finished.

I saw an episode of TFB without Mick one time, and Lawrence Mooney was filling in for him, and that episode wasn't half as funny. Sam Pang is really good, but like HYBPA, when Tom Gleisner isn't hosting it, Sam isn't as funny. Pang's humor relies on playing off someone else, like Molloy on TFB, or Tom on HYBPA, but he had nothing to work with that night with Lawrence Mooney.

It is also dependent on its guests. If you have someone like a Malcolm Blight, it is great, but if you have someone like Mick Malthouse (who I don't think has ever laughed in his life), the guys need to work harder to get something out of them.

The Footy Show in its heyday had musical parodies, "Big Billy's House", clips of Garry Lyon on a stretcher, tweaking his hammy or dancing like Mick Jagger. It had J.B. laughing, pulling silly faces, and the "ramming the point home" clip. It had "Sam's mailbag" and people not knowing what Sam would do or say, or how Shane Crawford would piss him off this week. The Front Bar has three guys sitting around talking to some old football relic and showing funny clips, week after week, after week, after week.

There are a mountain of reasons the Footy Show fell over, too many to cover in this post, but it wasn't because of the success of "The Front Bar", as the people who watched that wouldn't have watched TFS regardless.

If the Footy Show didn't exist, I wonder if the Front Bar would be as hyped.

As, I have seen the "Marangrook Footy Show" and while it is good, and Gilbert McAdam knows his stuff, even if it started doing bad, you wouldn't hear any criticism, since any critic of the show, even if it was warranted, would be deemed "racist", as I tip that I will be by someone posting here, for merely even suggesting that the show could ever have any flaws.

I wanted this to be good and had faith in Nez but it's pretty crap and she adds nothing. I'm not a front bar watcher either, but looks like I prob will be.
The kick looks like it'll be no worries though

I'm one of the many, many people that jumped off and left it with the paltry audience it now has.

But as it struggles in it's death throws, I hope people of the 35+ age category are able to forgive it's latter day sins and remember what a trailblazing show it was.

It was dead when Eddie first left

Sure Gary and JB gave it a little CPR in their early tenure...... but it was already on the canvas and in danger of not making the 10 count.

True. While the very personality-heavy gags were enough to keep the show ticking along, it made it very reliant on those personalities and that dynamic, and even without what ultimately happened with Lyon and then with Brayshaw that schtick was never going to be able to survive forever.

The biggest thing about that dynamic was that it moved the show away from being about news (which was maybe inevitable with the internet, influx of tv shows, and EM's Collingwood role) and about the players. During the Lyon/JB years the very regular criticism was that players would sit there for 2 hours and maybe speak for a total of 5 minutes each.

The front bar doesn't have women involved...

I don't think its sexist to wanna see a bunch of blokes taking the piss out of each other, its good TV. The issue with having a women on the panel is that you can't really make jokes around her for obvious reasons so things just get awkward

Hence why The Footy Show was brought to it's knees the moment Bec was brought on, as Sam and others had to walk on eggshells rather than speak freely, so the spontaneous humour was gone, and their only jokes were scripted. The Sunday Footy show has the right mix of people and banter, similar to the Triple M golden era, but if you had that same panel on a Thursday night, all of a sudden it would be deemed sexist &/or too many white males... by the people that would never watch it anyway of course.

If something is too offensive to say with a woman on the panel, it should never have been said tv without her there.

If you're too embarrassed to say something harmless because you're afraid of the woman on the panel, you need to be better at your job.

Andy Maher comes across like Johnny Carson compared to Lehmo and the hot chick. It might be the worst TV show ever put on network television - worse than Magic Johnson's talk show

I rate Neroli very highly, but this is not the right show for her at all. (And that's nothing to do with her being female. The others on the show are male and certainly no better. At least Nez proved last year on multiple shows that she is worthy of being on footy tv)

I find Mick Molloy to be pretty cringe, but for whatever reason The Front Bar works for him IMO. The humour on that show is far better, and frankly so is the footy talk. Matthew Scarlett is not your typical dailed-up-to-11 personality that footy shows always go for as guests. He's the polar opposite, but I really enjoyed his interview last night. Not every second of every minute needs to consist of attempting to take the piss in order for us simple sports fans to stay engaged.

When there was no front bar on 7 , Footyshow critics would say “oh I watch the Marngrook Footyshow” it’s much bettter , more footy talk etc

So why didn’t Marngrook’s ratings go through the roof ?

Then or even now

Of the three they talk more about the weeks upcoming games than the other two do

When I see these sorts of comments I wonder how much time has that person spent around women because they can be every bit as crude and blunt as any bloke can be. The problem with Bec wasn't that she was a women but she simply didn't have the right personality to suit the show. The reason why Sam was forced to pull his head in is because Australians don't share Sam's love for Trump or that style of reactionary cultural war whinge fest and it isn't just a Trump thing but Australians have historically found American politics to be over the top.

Aside from the humour, there's one thing The Front Bar integrates really well that The Footy Show can't replicate - current match and archival footage.

Footy Show never used it even when 9 had the rights.
