Glenhope there is absolutely no excuse for Eddie not knowing who was tossing the coin last night. He is an astute successful businessman and professional media man - 5 minutes research would of saved him a lot of pain.

I don’t think his comment was aimed specifically at Banham but at those who toss the coin in general, but in an age where sensitivity and respect are front and centre, he needs to be mindful at times of the words he uses and last night wasn’t that moment.

For me it’s not that he insulted a particular person but that he felt the need to be critical at all. People are invited to perform this role and for them it’s a privilege and one that they no doubt look forward to - they don’t need a bloke sitting in some studio, looking to fill 60 seconds taking the gloss off that and maybe through his comments subjecting them to further ridicule from school friends, work colleagues or social media arseholes in general. Not everyone has the tough skin that so many in here obviously have and imo it’s really not that hard to be respectful of people full stop.

The other problem for Eddie is that he makes a habit of saying inappropriate comments and you would think that’s the main issue here for most. He just doesn’t learn from past mistakes nor does he really get held to account for them and maybe that’s why the backlash seems excessive.

Anyway it’s done - he has apologised, given himself a ban and we wait for next time.

That's about as perfect a summation as is possible, I reckon.

This. There is always a reason why someone is chosen to toss the coin - every ****ing game!! If you’re a commentator do your job and find out, it might stop you saying stupid things, and the audience would like to know too.

Even if he knew - he still didn't say anything offensive. That's the issue.

Yeah.. because the public tunes in on a Friday night to hear the life story of the person tossing the coin.... Maybe we should have serious discussions about the stories of members of the crowd too, and the taxi drivers that drive them there, and the record sellers? Invigorating stuff!

Why as a society are we so sensitive to someone saying something inappropriate but don't actually care about the 1000's of terrible things that happen to people every day?

I do care when Eddie did the Goodes/King Kong thing. That was troubling.

But I didn't give a care in the world that Eddie had a go at Caroline Wilson when he himself was raising money for charity and she was sitting on her backside sniping at his leadership.

Nor do I care that he was having a cheap laugh at how many people stuff up the coin toss but stuffed it up big time by not noticing the woman clearly had some serious injuries.

If you want to live in a utopia where everyone is nice all the time then tell me what you're doing about it?

I'd be happy if Eddie gave a proper and personal apology to the woman and made a donation to a cause of her choosing. It's a lesson for the rest of us to be careful with what we say but all jumping on Eddie with negativity doesn't really spread the message that everyone should be nice all the time.

I wasn't outraged until I knew others were, now I'm furious!
I'm even more offended than you.

Maybe more offended than anyone!

Bow down before my 'woke'-ness!

Thank Fxck she wasn’t doing the toss in the big bash. She would have killed someone. Inb4pcbrigade I am an above knee amputee.

The funniest thing is watching Ed rightly or wrongly (and I reckon there is nothing in this one) having to back out of another “gaffe” and apologise. It’s an annual season highlight and sport wondering who he will offend next !

haven't been around for ages but this brought me back.

I have cerebral palsy, I use a walking stick. I use a wheelchair.
My legs don't work, my left arm doesn't work. I am crap at coin tossing. My mates stir me up.
My mates are rubbish at coin tossing. I stir them up.
You know what really offends me? people being offended on my behalf because they see a disability and feel the need to protect me because whether they realize it or not they see me as less then.
I don't want you to pat me on the head and tell me how great it is I'm being included.
The toss was rubbish as most are, the joke was funny. I'm not a fan, but don't hate him either. Good on Eddie for seeing a person and not a disability.

you know whats offensive? when someone on your wedding day asks your husband are "you sure you want to marry a crip?"
when you're wandering through a shopping centre and some random complains that *******s shouldn't be out in public.
when someone feels the need to trip over themselves using normal words. Yes we can go for a walk, you don't have to call it going for a roll.

If you think disabled people need to be treated with kid gloves, I challenge you to try a game of wheelchair rugby.

Just be normal, like you are with everybody else. I am.
Post of the thread and possibly post of the year. Kudos to you!

Storm in a teacup. A private apology would have been in order, it's quite obvious he did not intend to offend.

For those that say it doesn't matter how you toss the coin, I was always told that it had to rotate in the air to be legit. (Not a comment on the one the other night which I didn't see, just a comment in general).

Why do we have to have all people from the general public doing the coin toss anyway? Just let the ump toss the coin and be done with it. Heaven forbid that the footy be about the footy and not all this extraneous crap.

My old man used to say to me, as a kid, "Deano, you could walk across a five mile paddock with one cow turd in it and you'd somehow manage to step in it".

When it comes to gaffes, Eddie is the same. In these ridiculous times the headline "Commentator apologises for criticising coin tossing ability of double amputee plane crash survivor" could only apply to Eddie.

I'm no fan of the bloke but I don't think he is a malicious person, but surely on the run through the AFL would have provided there would have been a bullet point about this woman and what she has endured. Would have taken him all of three seconds to read. But no, if there is a cow turd to tread in, Ed'll find it.

While there has certainly been an overreaction by some in the media (Erin Riley...lol) Eddie should be smarter than this for a person on a $3.5million salary.

Being a public commentator is challenging for a reason.

I imagine if Eddie had said something in this vein... "Poor coin toss, but she is disabled, so it's a pretty good effort", he would have been doubly inundated with abuse...

"How dare you assume someone who has lost their legs can't toss a coin!" "She's differently abled, she can still toss a coin! Don't patronise her, she can can do anything as well as anybody"

Once we create "sacred cows" where we are afraid to even reference them in conversation for fear of not being inclusive of every single viewpoint, civil discourse goes out the window. Everything will be taken in the wrong way by somebody...particularly those who gain validity by assumption of moral rectitude.

Of course he could have said nothing........

True, but I would consider that a different argument, which is whether he should be critical of the coin tossers in general.

This one, I suspect, is about whether he would have have been within his rights to criticise an 'able-bodied' person, but shouldn't do the same to Cynthia Banham because of her circumstance.

I made that point before. It's a big deal to be in front of an AFL crowd doing the coin toss. You'd be understandably nervous, and be a chance to muck it up as a result.

The problem with McGuire is that he can't understand that as he seems to lack empathy. So last night to him was simply an opportunity to get a laugh among fellow commentators.

Hopefully he may finally get it through his head to think before he speaks, especially when taking the piss out of others on live radio or TV.

To all the critics - read this very slowly and learn something
The problem may be YOU

Great comment by someone who would know

Just a complete piece of excrement of a person. Racist, sexist, arrogant, ignorant, stupid and now ableist, on top of just being generally intolerable as a human.

Should be fired from every job he has, mostly just for being a campaigner.
An ableist ? So a double leg amputee is incapable of tossing a coin ?

It’s an opinion based on multiple racist and sexist comments made publicly. Let me guess, you would defend eddie’s right to say racist and sexist comments based on free speech, but call him out for being racist and sexist and you should be sued for defamation?

What racist and sexist comments has Eddie made publicly? Post them

I dont like the man but it was a bloody observational JOKE.

Being disabled shouldnt afford you super special rights against observational jokes, WHEN THE JOKE IS NOT ABOUT YOUR DISABILITY.

If it were ANYONE ELSE stuffing up a coin toss and he made the same comments, all fine and dandy. If I had gone through the same experiences as her I wouldnt want people walking on eggshells around me and not making jokes like that because it might upset me.
