Sammy and his podcast jumped the shark when he had the bullet magnet death wish Lebo on, but tbh I always felt seriously cheated when chucking a sickie from school and Donahue or Springer had a level headed non mental guest on, talk about boring.

Ahh the nineties - back when everyone pointed and laughed at the nutjobs, rather than take them seriously.

The AFL blocked Wayne Carey from being inducted into the NSW hall of fame.

Not a stretch to think the AFL will remove Newman in these circumstances.
He wasn't blocked from the NSW hall of fame, he was still inducted. He was blocked from being one of the 10 inaugural legends of the hall of fame. Kinda like a Ablett Sr type thing. Cannot see him ever getting elevated to Legend status.

Disagree with that. Some of the most interesting documentaries I've ever watched have been based around controversial figures. Former Nazi's, serial killers, members of the KKK, modern day neo Nazi's etc.

I don't agree with almost anything any of them stood for or said, but I see no harm in the content being available for viewers to consume if they so wish.

Louis Theroux was always a favorite of mine in the space of interviewing and providing insight into some of these peoples existences and thought processes regardless of whether he condoned their behavior or not.
I agree with the above, however, is Sam Newman the right person for these interviews. Louis Theroux, and his brother for that matter are, but I’m not sure Sam Newman is.

Yeah ok thanks for clarifying. Pretty sure he is a hall of famer at Noth Melbourne but also hasn't been elevated to legend status there either.

Imo no. The podcast was boring as hell and really didn't provide any new insights into the two guests. Just them spouting rubbish and Sam disagreeing without getting anywhere in conversation.

Louis' stuff was always phenomenal.

Have a look at his brother Marcel’s stuff, death of a nation in particular if you haven’t already.

That’s sort of what I’m getting at, I’m not saying we should never hear from people like that, but I don’t think Sam has any business getting involved.

I realise I'm probably out of step on this, but I find Marcel's work to be far superior to Louis'.

He deals with difficult/interesting subjects and in some depth, whereas I always get the feeling with Louis the first question he asks is will it rate?

Doomsday preppers, white nationalists, neo-nazis, scientology.....some insights but how much did we not already know?
Quirky, entertaining, but I've always thought of it as fast food.
Good documentaries give you the full meal.

And one particular annoyance is his THREE documentaries about the Westboro Baptist Church.
A group of nutters whose congregation has seemingly numbered more than ~90.

Much like Newman and the neo-nazis you end up giving these fringe-dwellers a platform, a degree of legitimacy by interviewing them.

Westboro turn up at the funerals of dead soldiers and funerals of school shooting victims bearing signs such as 'God hates ****', a small group of neo-nazis turn up on Australia Day in Adelaide and 16 get arrested for various offences (including displaying nazi symbols).

These people do it for the publicity, maybe one or two new members drawn to the 'cause'.

In the overall scheme of things Sewell and his mates are a small group, desperately seeking publicity and relevance.
Don't give it to them.
If people are concerned about their 'threat' let the police/security services deal with it.

Agree with all that, but I do find Louis entertaining and his follow up on the pornstars was good. But yes, Marcel is excellent

Sam Newman's an ex footballer though, he's no more a journalist than anybody else with an opinion and internet connection.
He was one the main hosts of one of the most popular shows on Australian TV for two decades, that has to count for something experience wise.

The idea that’s it’s ok to platform nazis as long as you don’t agree with them is dangerous stuff. You’re still giving them a voice, an opportunity to be heard by impressionable people.

It’s like how Rogan lets all sorts of nuts come on his pod and spout bullshit, because as much as you want to believe that Newman arguing their points means they will be shut down, there will still be a bunch of listeners who like what they are hearing and take it on board.

Reminds me of talking to a mate who listens to Rogan, he was trying to tell me that the world could just stop spinning at any moment and we’d all be swamped by a tsunami…he heard this dumb shit on Rogan and he was going around reciting it like it was this amazing thing that could definitely happen.
Yeah the Nazi's had their chance. The entire world decided that they were campaigners and bashed the shit out of them.

They don't get another go. There is no benefit to giving them a platform of any sort.

I don't think I've seen much of Marcell's stuff but given the recommendations I'll have to have a look in my free time.

One counter point id say re the Westboro Baptist Church etc is the content people like Louis have produced is definitely a net benefit imo. While giving them a platform to spout their ideologies would inevitably create some some new fans of the cookers, it also educates many viewers like myself (when I was around 15) of the dangers of organizations like theirs and know to avoid them in the future. Without those docos and interviews perhaps more people would get swept up in cults like Scientology after seeing their favourite celebrities preaching about it without knowing the dangers of being involved with a group like that.

I think the key is really the interviewer/producers. Imo Newman did a crap job with the 2 Neo Nazi's so I wouldn't care if it was removed from existence, but I'm certainly not going to smear him for doing a crap job.

If he had them on and agreed with their views then I'd be in favour of calling for his removal like some have suggested.

I don't really care much either way about one whackjob talking to two other whackjobs, but I am quite enjoying the assertions that we should essentially forcibly censor an opposing political view because it's the fascist one.
You think actual Nazis should be allowed a platform then?

If they're not doing anything illegal then yes.

What's the alternative and where do you draw the line otherwise? Fascists suck so ban them, actually most other ideologies that aren't mine suck so ban them too, in fact I heard there are books that have been written about fascism so maybe we should ban them and burn all the copies? Any of that sound familiar?

Being able to voice our personal disgust at these types of people is part of the same system that allows them to also have a voice.

You can't tolerate intolerance in society, lest it spread and become the norm. End of story.

Exactly. It's not that hard of a concept; you don't give a platform to those who wish to exterminate entire races.
If you guys don't see the issue with becoming fascists to defeat fascism then that's cool, I was just saying it amused me is all.

And if you can't see that you don't give actual Nazis oxygen, then that just makes me sad.
Honestly I don't even know (or care to be honest, they don't sound very nice) who these guys are so I can't comment on the actual nazis part, but I'm sure nazis feel the same way you do about the groups that they hate too. You do you brother.
