Josh Bruce has had an outstanding start to the season.

Ignoring his goals, marks and disposals, his ability to make a contest when outnumbered is very good. It keeps the contest alive.

We are lacking (at this stage) intercept marking across the back line. This is something essendon started to do really well in the second half and we didn’t match them. With Roberton and Carlisle out we need to find someone to fill the void.
Have to agree, also need a bit more marking power in the forward line, as I thought the 'Dopes took a few too easy marks deep in our forward half.

Not sure what people expect from Kent TBH. He does his job. Can he play better?

Yes, but so can the rest of the team.

Settling in nicely.

My concern with him in last week's game particularly was the laziness. He stood still and pulled up in chases at times. I assume he's meant to be Mav's replacement and at the moment he's scoring slightly above Mav but has a much poorer defensive side. He almost has to go at 2 to 3 goals a game like Milney to make up for his one way game. I thought he was a lot more accountable this week though. If he keeps his spot he's holding out Long and Young, maybe even Rice who is more like Mav forward. Young and Longs pressure game is much stronger and potential to score isn't that different.

I think that’s the hope for Battle

They need someone to win first use but keep getting outside mids. They need to get a ball winning mid instead of a heap of front runners who want someone to do the hard work. AFL have made them soft by gifting them everything they could ask for to get them back on track. Even the admin think someone else will do the work for them.
They need to keep doing exactly what they are doing for the next 20 years IMO...

Agree with both points, particularly Bruce, he has been huge these first couple of games.

So far the main bloke intercepting I've seen has been Wilkie, but he doesn't do it nearly as often as Carlisle or Robbo. Battle doesn't seem to have it in his game so far, maybe he'll improve at it with more time down back. Otherwise not sure what the answer is at this stage.

That said, like everyone here I'm absolutely stoked with the win and though all the boys went pretty well tbh. Could name half the side in the best.

Soe firstly it's your assumption that he is supposed to replace Weller. They are chalk and cheese.

In terms of keeping players out, how about they earn their spot?

We all love Long, his attack and his skill. But let's be honest, he has been nothing special either so far.

Rice is probably done IMO.

Let Young string some games in the season proper and not third rate practice matches.

I'm still not sure why Kent isnt allowed a few games to settle, and needs to be dropped, yet everyone melts when any other player is immediately dropped after a bad game.

I honestly don't see the point in dropping players for the sake of it just off one game.

If a player has a howler, and if there is a replacement banging down the door, then fair enough.

Otherwise let's not drop players just so we have something to talk about and keep ourselves busy on a forum.

Not pointing this at you, Just speaking generally.

Thought Kent contributed well last week. Two assists and a clutch goal and while I didnt see it, someone said he had a role on Harbrow who did nothing.

Thought he added a lot yesterday and has been a great addition.

Is not unfit, has not replaced Mav and is a very good addition.

Pretty sure they moved a forward up ground and we held our defender back and it worked a treat we didnt have a extra

Mitch Brown spent time behind the ball in the last. He also coat hangered our Brown in the last seconds and they pinched a goal. As blatant as the Webster necking.

Great win. So happy for the boys. You can see they are really starting to believe a bit in the game plan.

On a less positive note another game and another loss in the free kick count. On a weekly basis we get a raw deal from the umpires, it’s becoming a bit of a joke TBH.

essendon are a good side. i think they found their feet against us. i can't see them going on a losing streak for much longer. this is what makes our win even greater. they came ****ing hard at us and we took the punches and came back.

really really good win.

we need 9 more wins to play finals, i think.

Marshall was so good in general play that I’d go so far as to suggest that if we really want Longer to come into the team then Marshall should play as a ruck rover who can provide a contested marking target between the flanks.

But why would we want him in. Marshall provides a contest in the ruck then moves great around the ground. He couldn’t start in the middle though with longer

It was Sav's son in the circle for the song for those asking.

And injuries - Roma hurt his ankle but played out the game. Longer will come back through the 2's next weekend. I think injury permitting, Roma plays again. He was incredible for us yesterday.

Beating Essendon, North and Fremantle are important if we are going to be around the September mark. So this was an important win. If we can back it up next week then I think the ECO bus will be empty and driverless.

Talking of poor quality, my internet seems to get worse all the time. I haven't got Broadband in my area yet but are they speed limiting so you want their shit service in a preemptive strike? I signed up for Kayo yesterday because my stream was down and half the time it was so pixelated it was worse than a stolen stream. A couple of times it froze and I had to go back and reload the page.
We've just moved to the NBN (lower speeds than the previous ADSL service - surprise surprise surprise) but I've had no problems with Kayo so far.

Is a little pixelated when you first start but stayed solid all through yesterdays game. $25 bucks a month - bargain!!!

Roma was very good for us. Essentially another tackling, marking midfielder. The biggest thing with Roma is that the boys trust him, they will kick to him long and short because they have faith in his ability to move the ball. L

With Pierce and Longer you can see the boys avoiding them sometimes.

So Roma makes a defender accountable and that helps offensively.

Im watching the game now & what is noticeable is our structure & displine for the defence (across the whole field) to keep its shape has drastically improved. Pretty much shutting Essendon down when they try & counter. Playfair might now be getting the support from other line coaches & the players?

A lot of these taller mobile blokes played midfield in juniors before their growth spurt, so their skill at ground level is miles apart their direct opponent. If I'm not mistaken Roma is in that basket, as is Max King. I trust Ro when he has the ball in his hands. Makes good decisions, impacts the contest. Only 13 or games into his career too.
