Thursday Night Game Starts 7.20 ACDT

Last Time We Met

Thursday July 12 Adelaide 16.16:112 Defeated Geelong 14.13:97
Laird 43 possessions Tom Lynch 4 goals

Rory Sloane Signs for 5 Years

After all the speculation Sloane resigned for 5 years giving a much needed boost . But it was Geelong that raced out to a 3 goal lead before Tex made a huge impact with a big bump on Zac Touhy. This sparked the Crows who led by a goal at quarter time. Half time saw the lead slowly open out to 8 points before the 3rd quarter helped Adelaide move the game into the win column and the crowd had an opportunity to Roar-y as Sloane dobbed one from a long way out. The last quarter saw the AFC get to 29 points before quick goals to the Cats saw the margin 14 points at the end

Changes:

Adelaide: With a short break between the SANFL game and the Thursday night and a win for the AFL boys changes may be at a very minimum. Sam Jacobs looked to have stretched an ankle and could be under doubt- but you try telling Sauce he isnt playing!

From the coaches mouths the only inclusion is likely to be Greenwood. But we really wont find out till Wednesday

Geelong: Henry is listed as doubtful with a hamstring strain. Henderson seems to be the popular choice to replace him (Cats Board) with Touhy still a few weeks away.

Form: Both teams had wins and in 2 different ways. Adelaide slogged it out at the SCG and while looking in control they really were only a slip away from losing , while the Cats deestroyed Melbourne. The Cats stats read like a nightmare for Adelaide coaches. Any neutral , even at our home ground, would tip Geelong.

Why Adelaide can win: Home Ground, city and players buzzing after the AFLW Premiership came our way, Geelong bathwater, blind optimism, faith, miracles. I am going to tip Adelaide because thats what i do but my money will be going on other games

Why Geelong can win: Form. Just clicked again. I had them dropping out of the 8 and already I may be eating my words. They seem to be playing with a ferocity that pushes sides away.

But its Round 2 and all the results have been difficult to gather form. Are teams good or opposition bad? Does a win against Sydney mean anything if the Bulldogs beat them? Does beating Melbourne mean anything just yet?

My hope is this is the vision we see Thursday night

Looking forward to this one, not least because my daughter was chosen for her first time to play Auskick at half time of this game.

Not as confident of knocking of Geelong as I was in the last couple of years, but football is a funny game and almost anything can happen on any given day.

I think the one thing about Geelong's early season form, is they have gone against 2 of the more loaded offensive midfield groups in the league, who are not necessarily defensively minded midfield groups (Collingwood and Melbourne).

Probably allowed them to play their star's in a shootout style midfield rotation (which to me is the last thing you want to do with a team as top heavy as the Cats). I think the game rests on us not letting Geelong play the game on their terms. Lock down the Big 3, Sloane to Danger in the Mid, or Kelly down back. Knight to Selwood (ding ding, get ready for round 3), and Hartigan to Ablett (see if he cant reproduce his famous Robbie Gray 'tall on a elite small' performance). And obviously send Talia to Hawkins and aim for the 0-0 draw in that contest.

It seems overly defensive, but it forces their 2nd tier players to beat us, and considering they don't really lock down our players, it will allow most of our top players the freedom to play their natural games.

Good analysis. My concern is Knight might come out for Greenwood, which is an extremely negative thing to do

Sure Joel may get possessions but he also has to spend time dealing with Riley and I get the feeling that annoys him more than wearing elastoplast on his head

I would keep Knight in

I would think Knight would be one of the first guy picked for this game. For that reason and that reason alone.

Selwood gets disposals when Knight plays on him, but he hasn't impacted the game like we know he can.

Greenwood in for Jones. Disappointing but I expect Jones to be the one to make way.

Jacobs? Given that we leave the decision solely up to the player, I wonder which way Jacobs will go?

Rest up but risk ROB looking the goods.

Play and be well below his best due to not being 100% which may help push ROBs barrow anyway.

His decision will be telling. He's not stupid. He knows he's fading a bit. In previous years he's had such faith in his ability that he'd always play. Even back himself at 60% fitness to perform ok.

Can he now? He might feel that he'll do more damage to his selection prospects by playing. Better to have ROB out there while Dangerfield, Selwood and Kelly control the midfield stoppages.

Lose the battle, win the selection war

The last time we put Knight on Selwood, Selwood managed 29 touches, 5 inside 50s and 3 clearances. Also had 400 meters gained and 4 score involvements

Not sure Knight was actually all that effective. He forced Selwood into 9 turnovers but Selwood seemed to still get a lot of it.

Knight himself actually had a worse disposal efficiency than Selwood and equivalent turnovers per disposal

Don't think Knight is in any danger of being dropped. If Greenwood does make the cut it will most likely be for Jones-cue howls of outrage. DM has had two good games, hope he can continue in this vein--cue even more virulent howls of outrage.

Yes, this is a real book from my childhood

How many of those disposals hurt us though. From memory he had a lot of cheap touches that got him no-where or worse, put his teammates in worse positions then him.

I think Selwood never dries stats wise up with Knight next to him, but his game definitely suffers.

I didn’t see the game on Saturday night, but there are not many times you are going to concede 73 inside 50’s to 48 and win, let alone win by 80 point.

Crows defensive structures need to be better than they were against Hawthorn.

Big crowd will get us home for a big win!

I think his output was reduced slightly while we completely lost a player. When you tag you need to take someone out of the game and having 29 touches (of whatever quality) is not doing that. Sure, Selwood had 9 turnovers but that still meant 20 of his touches were okay which is more than Knight got in the entire match.

Would we be better off if we put someone else on Selwood to "tag" him while gaining more offensively? I'm sure a guy like Brad Crouch could still let Selwood get it 29 times while tackling him a bit and annoying him.

In general I think Knight's tagging effort on Selwood is overrated. Too many people get caught up on how Selwood gets a bit frustrated without realizing despite this, he still is having a bit of an impact

Not everyone would agree with that, Riley did a pretty good job of curbing Selwood's influence on the game whether you think so or not.

If you go deeper into the game stats Selwood was down on most indicators compared with his season averages in that game. i.e clearances, score involvements, 1%'s, tackles i50's, DE% and his turnover count was over double his season average.

I disagree, mainly because I've seen seen plenty of bad 29 possession games. Rory Laird had a howler of a 29 possession game less then 2 weeks ago, and that's a perfect example of a team figuring out a way to minimize a players ability to impact a game, without necessarily curtailing his ability to rack up possessions.

We are doing the exact same thing by sending Riley Knight to Joel Selwood. Send a guy to play a instigating defensive role to get under the skin of one of the dirtiest players in the AFL. Not only did it lower his effectiveness (way more then a year old stats sheet will tell you), but it also increases his chances of doing something stupid.

Hell last time he got so pissed last time he eye gouged Riley Knight on live TV!!

And how many of his 'effective possessions' were cheap ones that put his teammate under the pump?

Guys like Selwood have mastered ways to make their stats sheet look good even when they have had a poor game. Rory Laird is another (although his poor games are pretty few and far between), Dane Swan was the king of it!

My question is can we achieve the same outcome putting a more offensively capable player on Selwood instead? Someone that will stop him and hurt him the other way? I think Brad Crouch is a perfect candidate for that role.

I mean you can say he had a bad 29 disposal game in your opinion, but in the game last year Joel Selwood was good enough to receive 3 coaches votes, the highest of any Geelong player: https://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-07-16/aflca-votes-round-17-big-max-gets-max-votes
