Prior to round 1 my backline looked like this:

Mills, Williams, Smith, Moore, Ridley, Clark (Duursma, Hore)

Before the end of round 1 I had moved Ridley on to Lloyd and have now traded Whitfield in for Mills. That means Darcy moves to D5 but i can switch him into my forwardline for Nutting (my loophole)

I'm pretty happy to have Lloyd and Whitfield now and i can choose to play 1 or 2 rookies. I'm really not sure who ill be targeting for upgrades though. Sicily/Laird/Hurn seem reliable enough while McGovern, Rich, Saad and Newman have started the season on fire but i dont really trust them, particularly not Saad and Rich at least. I guess that (touch wood) i wont need to be trading in my backline for a few weeks so i can wait for the dust to settle.

Are there any other top 6-10 options ive forgotten about?

Crisp

+1

I'm grabbing him before Whitfield.

94 games straight with Collingwood, a solid 96 average last year, and 103 to start 2019.

Prediction? Will be top 4 defender in total points for 2019.

Got Whitfield, Andrews, Williams.

Targeting Lloyd, Laird and Crisp to complete the 6.

Then would look for Sicily (either as swap for Williams or Williams at D7).

May change if Sicily's affordability early gives him value.

Less chance of a tag these days with their emerging stars and blokes like Neale/Zorko?

Would think teams would have a strong midfield tag on Zorko, and then a good defensive forward on Rich. The defensive forward would still try to make Rich accountable. No reason they can't have both.

True. I think Witherden and Harris take some of the pressure off Rich down there these days though so can see him having a decent year still. Still won’t touch him

Thoughts on whether I should abandon McGrath?

He pretty much only played 3 quarters last week after Merrett sent him a hospital handball, but two 70s in a row is still disappointing.

I can’t help you on McGrath.

But Merrett. Boy oh boy wowee. Worst 28 possession game I’ve ever seen

Yeah he’s been atrocious.

I would 100% trade him, but I can only sideways him to another midpricer. So I'm undecided.

Yeah he’s been atrocious.
On a serious note, the whole Essendon team has been so poor. If you don’t see them changing anytime soon then McGrath probably has to go. Potentially to someone like Newman if you don’t have him and don’t have cash to upgrade to a top 6er

Hey Toxic
Do you think heeney to crisp is worth a correctional trade?

Was considering Crisp preseason and think he will be top 6 defender, so giving heeney time to get right and see what role horse has him play.

Sorry, but I'll throw in my 2c worth. (I've been weighing up something similar...)

He could be a top 6 defender, but not sure we can expect a big improvement over last year.
Since he cemented his spot in 2014 he's averaged between 84.0 DT (2016) to 91.4 (2015) [87.5 last year].
Remarkably consistent. (ie. No way in hell he has a million marks and 140 DT each week!)

He has his best SC year last year due to better DE% and more R50s.
Can he keep it up? Improve further? Regress a bit?
Hopefully someone does know!

Thanks for your input and it makes sense. certainly raises questions if he can improve his average this year. It's a tough call. I'm trying to trade out heeney but not confident taking any of the midpriced wonders currently scoring well. would rather give them a couple more weeks.

So looking for a top 6 fwd or def for under $580k - no great brainwaves yet. But I'll keep thinking for one more day

Big ol Harris Andrews at 480k ;)

Yep, exact same boat.
Weighing up a straight swap from Heeney to Kelly, or Heeney to Parker and Hore up to a D keeper. (about 2k short of Whitfield... :@)

Good luck.

Harris over Rich?
The knock on Rich Is that he can’t handle attention. Also coming into something like his tenth year and never averaged high enough to consider a keeper. Kick in rule is favouring him this year though. Andrews doesn’t exactly have the runs on the board though. Each have their risk. I’m big on Andrews. Was killing it last year before Cameron KO’d him

McGrath gone for Moore.

Had to de-Essendon my team regardless, we suck.

Brodie Smith confirming what we already knew, that he's going to be a stepping stone, not a D1-D6 keeper (might be worth holding at D7 for the year if you can)

Hopefully he still has a 120+ score left in him and he makes it to $450k+ at some stage
Only if he improves his scoring. At his current rate he'll scrape through to about 390k.

A warm body for a late year upgrade. Will be my D6 for a while

Flip him in the last bye round. FWIW he's always struggled against Geelong and the Hawks. Adelaide fixture opens up in the short term.
