we're better than last year because most of the players are better. but i'm not sure bolton's done anything to improve this team.

he bought casboult in even though everyone in australia knows he's a total liability, and we know that sydney are a contested style team and we had kennedy who was best in the 2s and who most believe he's best 22 anyway but he ignores him.

we know there are injuries but geez if he can only coach when he gets a clear run with injuries then he can't coach.
Without Cas today its a much bigger margin against us. He hurt them good with his attack on the pack. No prisoners with Levi.

So someone tell me why we desperately had to get Marchbank and LOB in? LOB had a nice kick or two but looks miles off it. Marchbank is like I-can’t-believe-it’s-not-Weitering. Tall, dark, handsome, slow, but doesn’t have anywhere near the presence of the bionic one. Why did we need him? To control raging third gamer Blakey? Meanwhile any Swan under 6’2 had a day out.

Another moral victory to us?
No... I'm sorry but this is not a victory by any stretch of the imagination.

At some stage this has to be called for what it is. A Loss. Not an Honourable loss or Morale Victory.

This needs to sting and hurt and drive the players too will the win.

I am confident that good times are coming and also have belief in Bolton but this hurts. I can see some much in these boys and so much that 'could be.' But we can not get by on talent alone. A lot of boys could learn from their captain on what it means to give it all.

Russell has his work cut out for him in the mental side of things. He has done so well in getting the boys fit. Now we need to work on the basic skills and mental conditioning.

So seems like that most of you want to direct the blame at the coach

In the past, games where we have been behind by 5 goals or so, have been blowouts, yet we have fought back to 3 goal losses in the last 2 weeks

I take it that our 1st quarter competitiveness was not his doing, the 2nd and part of the 3rd was Bolton's fault, yet the lift in the last has nothing to do with the coach either (similar to the 1st quarter)

On another note, it is also Bolton's fault that Harry missed 3 (2 sodas and one from the angle that most players kick), Dow easy miss and general field kicking, Levi hitting the post and Cripps not getting close to the big sticks from 35?

Okay I am up to speed now
I agree Bolton can't be blamed for skill errors. But as for the piss-weak efforts some of our guys dish up, the coach must be at least partly accountable.

last week Ed was in the flogging box and many were calling for the end of the Ed as a forward experiment. Do we have an interchange into the flogging box- it seems ed has come out and new players have entered.
Polson and Gibbons are not the problem- its the output of players like Dow and setterfield . Bring in kreuzer Charlie and get Mitch on the park and we have a much closer game- even a victory.

Ed was at sea for 2 weeks....fact.
He turned it around but don't you see the robbing peter to pay paul with Ed on a flank, without playing Kennedy

Rotten goes to saints... saints playing ok with injuries worse than ours... coincidence?
I think not, if we had Ratten coaching with this list we would be miles in front of where we are, knows how to coach to the strengths of the personnel he has at his disposal. A great coach and I will never forgive the media and our own ****ing board for what they did to Ratts. Cowards the lot

I like many others would like to see some improvement. Is that too much to ask?

Except for the first quarter the game was basically a carbon copy of last year. We bomb it down to our best forward (this time McKay instead of Curnow) and if they don’t make something happen things get very grim.

It is incredibly frustrating to watch.
Not sure what you call improvement. A year ago its a ten goal belting in the same scenario. The kids are growing though. Not fast enough for us long suffererers but it's there without question.

Well GCS have a win, despite doing their best to blow it. Actually they have been very impressive for a team that was not meant to win a game. No Curnow and possibly no McGovern. I would reassess your estimate, considering we are averaging 70 points for the season.
So obviously 10.10.70 to 1.4 10

last week with no charlie in the wet we had 8 marks inside 50. today in perfect conditions we had the same. he added nothing there.

he was supposed to help out in the ruck when lobbe needed a rest....we got smashed in the ruck.

we got smashed around the ground which an extra mid would have helped with.

but at least he crashed a pack once....

Not to down on today's game, didn't expect a win.

Not down on Bolton either, I'm dead set certain he doesn't instruct our players to bomb it blindly at all costs. That's been our way for the past 6-7 years.

Strangely enough, 4th quarter and they (Cripps in particular) start lowering their eyes and hitting targets/runners and the scoring gets easier. Looked like a very clear instruction finally being heard across the board.

Terrible disposal isn’t as noticeable if you have a game plan that has players spreading and finding space.
Look at Sydney today, their players were always on the move with our players trailing by up to 10m which gave them room and time to have better disposal.

Also, the few times we lowered our eyes and kicked short to a free player we opened up the ground and created spread, but unfortunately majority of the time it was long kicks along the boundary.
No, we gave up the short kick to have another number down the line for the long kick. Meaning that they could play a lot of uncontested chip kick football.

We attempted to play chip kick football but were manned up for much of the game and the Swan's pressure combined with our poor disposal created situations where it was easier to bomb it down the line and risk a turn over or just turn it over in the contest.

It was a good performance from the Swans against a very young midfield.

The likes of Dow and Walsh just couldn't handle the pressure, but they'll learn from it and gradually that panic will disappear and we'll get better ball movement.

You guys are on a long cusp to, what I think, will be a reasonably sustained period of success (ie. a number of years of at least second round of finals). The key this year will be to win more games than last year but more importantly to cement a game style that leads to no more than one complete flogging in the season.

Regards

S. Pete

Rubbish

I reckon Dow and Harry would kick those goals 8 out 10 times (minimum) at training but because of their inexperience and age they haven’t got the head space right to apply that in game time pressure. It’ll come though.
Harry needs to slow down when taking set shots he rushes way to much.

And Heeney in the last, a ******* kid out smarted and out muscled him.

Heeney’s reasonably strong and similar size to Plowman, but he has to neutralise those contests.

For a guy who’s only real strength is his defensive ability, he is unbelievably suspect defensively on occasion.

Basically we have to start asking when will we get better. Today for me we lost it at the selection table.

Lobbe and O'Brien should have not been brought in. Lobbe got absolutely pantsed could hardly move. Keep telling me we don't need a ruckman. Same shit last year we had NOONE our ruck stocks are far too injury prone.

O'Brien is in no way ready for AFL.

Loved Jones and Weiters down back. Levi deserves a game before McGovern was good today. Obviously Cripps and Walsh huge.

Gibbons has to be dropped or played as a mid. He isn't a forward. The fact that has taken our coaches 5 games to figure out is getting very sad.

Honestly starting to question Bolton. Our list isn't that bad and we just are stuck in neutral

Him and Murphy should be swapped. Murphy needs to play in the forward 50, Gibbons in the midfield rotation. Been saying it for three weeks.

Such a game of centimetres ... Dow and Harry hitting the post at the beginning, Lance Franklin getting very questionable free kicks resulting in two goals ... 4 goal difference right there.
We would type, we lost by 9 points and you would type. "I wonder what we'd be typing if Dow kicked those 2 goals"

9 contested possessions between Setterfield and Dow, no we don’t need Kennedy at all, Fisher had 14 cont poss and he’s 65kg for **** sake, Cripps had another 22 cont poss because he had to to make up for Dow and Setterfield. They better bring Kennedy in next week or else.
I can't help but feel Fisher creates more contested possessions for himself than most players would in the same situation. All three were poor today, though Dow and Setterfield obviously had more in common with each other.

I am critical of our defensive setup apart from Jones on Buddy, matchups were all wrong. Losing McGovern mid game after Charlie being out hurt

Fisher should be playing a Gresham type role, not as the first outlet

Coaching has nothing to do with the poor "disposal young players" we have, has more to do with time and experience and somewhat of recruiting
Setting the players to fail tactically and athletically time and time again puts pressure on decision making and skill execution, even for those with elite fitness (see Thomas, Murphy, Simpson, Walsh, Marchbank, Weitering, Garlett, Plowman, O'Brien).

There's just not enough relieving uncontested options when we win the football back in defence, and it cuts us to pieces. We're taking fighter jets and jeeps and trying to turn them into tow trucks and earth movers...

Setterfield looks exhausted and we just finished round 3, somewhat expected though given his pre-season. He'll need managing very soon from Russell.

Wouldn't be against giving Stocker a run.
Suspect this is why Jack and Stocker were in the emergencies list in the first place.
