Maybe the players aren’t good enough. It’s not like our delisted players get constantly picked up and perform with other sides. By the way where should acres play?
Yep or maybe richo is an absolute cabbage and white should be on more than 10 games.

Acres should play midfield where he has picked up 25+ touches multiple times in the past and influenced games.

I know the theory behind what the club is trying to do, and Richo is still filthy at him for how he returned to the club, but my opinion, we’re going about it the wrong way. His confidence is shot and the attacking side of him is being crushed. He’s now at the stage of not being warranted for senior selection because he’s basically giving up in the reserves. Give him 2 weeks in the midfield with some freedom and see how he goes.

Not good to hear.
Hope he’s got a mentor and some good support around him because he showed real glimpses last year and we cannot afford to waste a top 10 pick in the same kind of manner that seems to have happened with White.

Maybe Richo needs to get over being “filthy” with a young kid and manage him properly.

Aww jeez, that sounds bad. I'm hoping Leathers and Ratts are clued onto it, but sounds like same same again for our development approach...

This is the answer once Marsh is fit and in form. He can really play and is versatile. Be interesting to see if it happens but 2 talls is unsustainable with the game style and level of skill of the mids. Be interesting to see if it happens.
Surely if you lack skill in the mids you want smaller players not taller players. People are living in fantasy land if they think a tall is going to take many contested marks. There is about 10 per team per game

They won’t go full time and neither they should. Would make the pool of umpires even smaller. They will continue to make mistakes because they are human and secondly half the time we think it’s an incorrect call it’s actually correct.

I actually thought ours was one of the better umpired games this year, but I do have questions for you re two decisions.

1. How come Freo got the free after Battle and Fyfe clashed heads accidentally, both going for the ball?
2. Why pay the free against Billings after his dropped mark when he was already on the ground? Pretty sure the rules say not to pay it when the player is on the ground?

IMO, this is the worst rule, a complete knee jerk reaction to one terrible accident to Gary Rohan.

No am just explaining why he is a disappointment. Can't just lob the rest of the team in for convenience to support your argument.

Acres is the worst culprit I have seen, mainly because as P66 said, he is not a smart footballer and goes off into la la land.
He cost us the game against Port in 2017 by not protecting the space, forgets where he should be, and is generally not switched on.
Have heard coaches yelling at him, 'where are you going' to him during match sim, when he wanders off.

You reckon the GOAT thing is a joke well it started out seriously but is certainly a joke now.
And the thing is, he has size, reasonable pace and football talent, but is pissing it up against the wall.
He should be a dominant mid, but is a bit player.
Fast becoming a waste. I would love for him to turn it around, nothing better, Billings has and I am wrapt.

But time is passing him by and he will blow a promising career.

You said he can't be a mid because he does this which is something all our mids do.

Bit harsh to blame the Port loss on him when Ross was Gray's direct opponent and he let him slip away. Hard to stop that over the back tap down by Ryder either way unless the whole team contributes to congesting the area which they failed to do.

Clearly we want the same thing for him, we just disagree about how to get the best out of him. One thing is for sure, he will never become a dominant mid by playing forward pocket.

Acres isn’t a mid. Turns like the queen mary and confuses forwards because they and him don’t know what he is doing. Seen nothing to suggest white should shave more than 10 games

Not just about taking contested marks but also competing and bringing the ball to ground. Ryan was close to best on the field yesterday.

someone - 'Marsh is a good player'
plugger - 'Contested marks are overrated!!'

I dont know how people can tell that after the few games he has played as a forward
He played a great game forward late last year from memory. I like us going with the one ruck and think marshall will be something special, but he's no hack forward like longer/hickey, he's actually pretty good

Our game plan is based on 3 tall forwards. 2 move up to the wings/CHF and 1 stays deep. Which means a tall target the entire way down the line.
Right now we have 2 talls. So either Paddy comes back. Marsh plays chb and battle moves forward or we keep on keeping on.

Gets my vote for what it’s worth.

The issue is that he hasn't been given the opportunities that others have. When Blacres was played on a wing last season before he got hurt he was in our best performing mids. It has taken Cho 4 seasons to finally play JB in his best position so there's hope for Blacres yet.

It's an interesting viewpoint that a number of posters have this morning though... Blacres is no good as a mid after he being played as a forward for the past two games.

Put him on a wing and leave him there FFS.
Acres and Ross rotate wing to mid. Simples

Stuv comes straight back but I wouldn’t be dropping Hunter after 1 game. Kid needs some consistency at the top level - so a selection quandry looms.
Won’t be surprised if we win this week but it will be a slog against a very improved hawthorn outfit.
Looking forward to selection and game day.

Right, here’s the opportunity for Ratts to really earn brownie points with us supporters :)

Reason I question the approach, he genuinely thought he had a good start to the year, was doing everything right, played well in the sandy practice match and then wasn’t until after that told he needed to work on his defensive efforts. Alarm bells surely go off that he wasn’t briefed on this prior or mentored as to what the coaches are thinking.

Screams of Richo believing he’s above the players again.. that caused most of the issues last year. For Geary to have to write a letter to Richo about the feelings of the playing group sums it up. I hoped he had changed, but honestly, can’t see evidence he has.

If Coff and Acres can't figure out the dedication and physicality required to make it at the level then they belong at Sandy..

Letting them play just because they are talented is the fastest way to end up like Carlton IMO...

Are you telling us not one coach spoke to him about his requirements?

Not the Sandy coach, the line coach, the head coach?

And you would know this how exactly?

The rest is straw man supposition

Yeah what happened to focusing on what players can do instead of what they can't? Coffield with elite disposal, dash and decision making getting turned into a lock down defender stinks.

2 wins a narrow loss & what appears to be a happy club & group of players & your saying you can't see evidence please, if you don't like Richo go to the sack Richo thread not game thread my self i see plenty of improvement & am happy in the direction we are heading still room for improvement because we haven't won that 2 premiership.

Players in the 22 will always be happy & love the coach players outside the 22 won't be happy & find negatives in the coach plain & simple been there done that for over 20 years.

1. Battle grabbed him after the head clash.

2. Freo player just tripped over him while he’s trying to mark the ball. Terrible decision, and led to their second goal.

Their first goal came about when Geary took a chest mark and the umpire called play on after the Freo player knocked it out of his hands.

It’s about learning all aspects of the game. Happens with every player and has happened for many years. Also there seems a lot of guess work in peoples thoughts. There is a simple answer to coffield getting picked in the seniors. Play better. Hopefully he is using the blame like some have on here.
