The Lyon cage. It's still about, only with a new coat of paint. Numbers behind the ball, suffocate the opposition. They won by kicking 71 points, for goodness sake. Classic RTB. We should've won easily. If you can't score more than 66 in perfect conditions you've been out thought and outmanouevered by the opposition. Think about it.
I have thought about it. Freo have won one game by 80 points kicking a huge score. They have lost one game when both sides struggled to score so imo Lyon would have liked a Hugh scoring game and richo would have liked a low scoring game. We got a low scoring game and if we kick as well as them we win. There you go. Thought about it and we got the game we wanted. They didn’t get the game they wanted. Not sure that is being out coached

Exactly. If we were so badly out coached how did we nearly beat them on their home deck and still manage to get within a kick after kicking poorly at goal
The bits where we got close was Lade and Ratts, when we dropped 5 goals down, Richo was coaching.

Also Richo plays Acres out of position, this is why he has to play hacks like Billings and Gresh in the mids.

Speaking of Billings, hated Richo last season and is only trying this season because he loves Ratts and Lade, who apparently hate Coff because nobody talks to him.

Where's Dave?

Now you're arguing for the sake of it. Ridiculous. When you get a 30 point deficit early, you've been jumped and outplayed. To whose advantage is it then to go defensive? Not the team that's trailing. Think about it. If that's the game we wanted we would never have caught up. See what I did there? Logic. Lyon played the entire game on his terms. He's been winning H & A games for 13 seasons in the same manner. We ran out of time and chances. Checkmate RTB.

The last time they got 30 up they went and got 80 up. Why the hell would Lyon want to go defensive and let us back in the game. They jumped us. Doesn’t mean you are out coached. Means you were outplayed which can happen but we will play your game. If he outcoached at the start because they got the jump then logic suggests we out coached them when we faught back. Now surely both situations are illogical but not as illogical as a side going defensive when 4 goals up to let the other side back into the game.

After starting so well of course Lyon wanted more goals so we would have been out of the game. It didn’t happen because we were good enough to not let it happen. At the start of the game I have no doubt they wanted a high scoring game and we wanted a low scoring game

So he was that badly out coached that we got within a goal at their home ground after kicking very poorly for goal. The last time freo played there they won by 80. Strange we could get so close with such poor coaching. Or is the truth you are that biased against him you would know if he coached poorly or not. Just out of interest what were the poor tactics apart from him telling the players to miss shots at goal

No the reality is we should have won by 5 goals if Richo had on ounce of lateral thought capacity in the box. Yesterday the entire group started really nervously and our skills we well below par in every aspect. Our poor kicking at goal is an epidemic within the group, but a lot of that is mental and players lacking belief. I wonder where that comes from?

Ok I've thought about it.
Didn't you just blame the poor conversion? And now you're saying we were outmanouvered? It can't be both, so which is it?

We don’t need another tall forward. We haven’t got one anyway and if anyone suggests moving Marshall forward then they don’t realise the value in the ruck. Doubt there are many if any changes next week. Jack May still not available. Hopefully he is because we win with him yesterday even though some thought it didn’t matter he was missing.

Yeah, their mids were bigger, stronger and more capable of winning first use. We really need a player like Cripps from Carlton, not another tall forward. We rob Peter to pay Paul with our forwards and mids all peeling back to help defence then hav very few forward of the bal so need to bomb to an out number. A good mid would minimise the need for the peel backs because it would be less of a weak area.

Did you see the hit out stats in the Gold Coast game compared to clearances. Most overrated thing in footy.

Hit outs and clearances don't always lead to winning games. Contested ball winners seem to make a bigger difference.

It was amazing to watch how much Mundy, Fyfe and Walters dominated us around the stoppage, especially centre clearances. We would love a guy with some nous in that area. Jack Steven is our best, but I'd love to see a few others step up. Hannebery will make us a lot better if he gets fit. I like some things about our midfield but they are not good stoppage players. Dunstan should work hard on that side of his game. Centre clearances cost us the game in my opinion.
Our mids were all trying to block, and in some cases had backs to the ball when bounced- the Freo mids just easily ran and collected too many easy-get balls. I feel our midfield and stoppage work has been too defensive so far, and we really need more run, spread and attack.

Relax a bit a 5 point loss & a game we kicked ourselves out of it 2-5 3rd quarter & at least 2 out on the full says were not far off, also 31 points down at the 10min mark of 2nd shows we have some character & a game plan that works only issue in that period was our forwards pushing to far up the ground which played into Lyons hand he loves the 2 on 1 situation.

Not potting Marshall as i agree he's our best going forward but stats don't tell the story his around the ground excellent his center ruck work poor & that's were our mids got beat we are not getting first use of the ball.

I thought Marshall was winning the taps but they just worked out where he was going. Fyfe just cleans up without any pressure from our mids and when sat on one of their other mids takes over. They looked bigger and stronger.

Magnificent effort at a very tough venue. My worry was Freo would build up a lead and effectively kill off the game, and when they were around thirty in front, early in the second quarter, I feared the worst. But then Saints dug in and really made a game of it, keeping the match competitive. If only we'd been able to keep it tighter at that early stage...

Anyway, no shame at all in that narrow defeat. Resilience and character were on display today, with plenty to be positive about. Everything points to a better year than 2018!
Many would have taken a valiant close loss before the game. Whilst hopeful we could take the points it was dare I say it pleasing to see the desire and effort was mostly there. When the skills match the desire and effort we'll truly be able to say we're back.

Onward and upward.

It could be worse... We could be 0 and 3 like three other teams right now.

Clearances make a huge difference especially when you lose centre clearances 15 to 5 1st use out of center with the new 6-6-6 rule is a huge advantage and has our backline under pressure from the get go

still think about the game last year. i think we've improved out of sight. weather or not thats enough to save richo we will see.

but we should be super proud of the performance and improvement.

gonna be an exciting 3 weeks
Weather can save Richo?

I dunno man, thats a mighty impressive storm cloud with a tsunami wave front coming. Maybe we're just seeing the initial signs of the tide rolling unusually far out at the moment bringing a misguided feeling of calmness.

Sems pretty obvious to me that we wont contend until more of our U23 players actually develop quicker. Starting to frustrate me that other teams 2/3/4th year players are tearing it up...and more of ours than not are either injured or in the twos. Go and look at what Brisbanes equivalent kids are doing. Their equivalent of Acres, Dunstan..down to Philips, Rice etc etc are actually match winning players.

That's bad recruiting.

Be lIke the rest of the minions and accept that as an honourable loss - Richo has a bag full, plus less than honourable ones! I am not apologising for having higher expectations of our team than others.
Or you can just blame the coach even if you have no idea what is expected of players

Richmond was the best side in the AFL last year and sat 12th for clearances. You'd rather win them but they don't necessarily win you games. 666 probably does favour teams with centre clearance winners but they are only good if you can't get it moving from that initial clearance.

I know the theory behind what the club is trying to do, and Richo is still filthy at him for how he returned to the club, but my opinion, we’re going about it the wrong way. His confidence is shot and the attacking side of him is being crushed. He’s now at the stage of not being warranted for senior selection because he’s basically giving up in the reserves. Give him 2 weeks in the midfield with some freedom and see how he goes.

Footscray will do it for him instead next year. Don't upset Mr Beige or your career can go south very quickly.

Well if that is the case at least we will get a trade done. Last time I checked he is contracted till at least the end of 2020.
Find it weird that for someone so beige that he allows players like Gresh Parker and Long into the team. Would have thought he wanted to get rid of xfactor players altogether.

Fact is that we had 21 scoring shots to 16. Not including the OOB shots.
Their first 2 goals came from non mark call to Gears and then the below the knees free against Billings. This helped get them the ascendancy which took time to come back from. The fact is they did and with the opportunities they made they needed it to count. They didnt. And hopefully that drives them next week.

Will be in Footscray seconds next year? Fine means we get overs as he is contracted until end of 2020.

Also wasn't Billings off to Essendon because he was dropped to Sandy. Hated Mr Beige but apparently loves him now as he would easily be leading Saints b&f.

Coffield can step up or step off. Like every single other player.
