Autopsy Saints overrun the Hawks - Rd 4, 2019 *ST KILDA FANS KEEP OUT

65 to 30 hitouts but on the day they looked ineffectual

This is a massive concern, we have give 2 sides absolute baths with the hitouts and lost both, the dogs was a massacre as was yesterday... What's going on with our clearance work? Sammy Mitchell? Dominate ruckman should see you win the clearance battle despite who we have in there.

This week we are going to dominate the hit outs again, if we don't clean up the clearance stuff we will get mauled.

There's a reason why Tom Mitchell was getting 40+ possessions a week. He was our midfield. It's a huge hole that's left and we don't have the depth to properly cover him, without another hole being created elsewhere.

I think Worpel and a fully fit O'mera with Silk and Shiels supporting is adequate enough however the issue is around the health of all of those guys outside of Worpel. As it stands we are all on tender hooks with O'mera, not really knowing how healthy he is and with Silk getting older and soft tissues becoming regular we need to assume his work load will decrease. The disappointing one is Liam Shiels, he is at his peak in terms of age profile but has had a slow start to the season and then was struck down with the hamstring. I am hoping Dan Howe finally realises the beastly physique he has been blessed with can allow him to develop into a Kennedy clone, that should be his aim.

Saints fan at work saying injuries played no part in the loss. Wow.
Statistically any team that loses 2 players in the course of a game rarely wins. Less than 5% of the time. Couple that with the other 4 players who had to go into the rooms for treatment. It’s not even close.

Think once Wingard gains match fitness, he'll have more stints in the midfield.

It's going to be a tough year, but we'll be competitive if we can finish games with 22 players.

It was a game where we didn't have our usual draw cards, we were just plugging holes all game. Rough looked likely up forward but needed in the middle. Gunston needed down back.

They likely knew Thursday night that O'Meara was only a slim chance. Howe was always needed back in our side. Once Jaeger was out, this game was going to be a struggle. With our regular midfield this game would have been regulation, but I'm not surprised that three rookie mids found it tough going against players with at least twice their experience. Add in the injuries, and I have to say we did well to make it a contest

spot on - i thought our junior midfield did pretty well given their relative experience...plus the added issue of lack of rotations....this year is all about gaining experience...and as annoying as all the injuries are, it is giving the kids a great deal of experience that they wouldnt get otherwise....

Statistically, it's almost impossible to win when you are down 2 on the bench (rarely happens according to 3aw footy, they were saying how remarkable it is we stayed in it as long as we did), and added to that Smith, Cousins, Nash and later Impey all played out carrying something. But **** me, that umpiring to hand them to match.. What an embarrassment to the sport.
Happened to us against Throwdogs too

Yep, that's twice this season we have given up a big lead to give it away. Ye the loss is disappointing, but I suppose it happens, injuries, umpires, blah blah....all excuses.

But what really hurts is Geelong belting us this week by 60+
Ye I know it has not even happened yet, but I fear for the HFC that runs out on Monday......it's going to be messy!
They'll be at full strength and we'll be a VFL side with a splashing of senior players and James Worpel!

The few things that I can be certain of, is, we will make those moron defenders (Harry Taylor and Mark Blicavs) look like billion dollar defenders, Selwood will receive 10 free kicks, Danger will rip our midfield a new one on his own mind you and Hawk will kick 6+

But anyways, I'll go along and see if the boys can maybe respond and prove everyone (Including me) wrong, but I won't hold my breath.

Not disappointed with the effort but annoyed at the panic shown in the last few minutes of that game. When St Kilda hit the lead there was still several minutes left on the clock. What on earth was all of that bombing the ball long nonsense? We played like there were 30 seconds left...and we did it for the whole of the last 4-5 minutes.

It made no sense whatsoever.

Saints fan at work saying injuries played no part in the loss. Wow.

Guessing you are a psychiatrist and are speaking of a patient in involuntary admission.

I was thinking of going to Penang only today in mid-July as have a credit with Malaysian Airlines but hope it is a nice place?

On another note does anyone remember the good old days of Waverley Park that catered for people who live on peninsula, now me, Phillip Island and Gippsland made it possible to see a game without a 2-3 hour drive.

Could always get a seat most times and a pie and beer without a wait or go to the toilet without cuing up. Those were the good old days as remember some big days watching the Hawks there with Dad from Peter Hudson flying in by chopper. Kelvin Matthews along with Leigh. Stuart Trott, Peter Welsh, Barry Rowlings etc...

Good old John Cain then Victorian Premier fu.... it all up as who was also then a member of the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC)) refused to approve the plans for the upgrade because it would have threatened the Melbourne Cricket Ground's right to host the VFL Grand Final. Total cu..!

Getting out of the ground was another issue if some recall as was horrendous in parking however was very fond of the ground and always let around halfway through the final quarter through the eighties when we would normally be around 10 goals up then listen to the rest of the game on 3AW on the radio going home.

Now we have Marvel (less) and ugly piece of superficial crap that should be bulldozed that cannot grow grass as sitting on a huge concrete slab.

Hail the days of Waverley for the people of the south east and country regions as sad we don't have that facility anymore.

Perhaps the Hawks could build a stadium in Dingley in the future with the land they have acquired and lease it out to the AFL and would make the club a fortune but I assume the other clubs may not be overly happy or the AFL agree.

Yeah can recommend Penang for a 4 or 5 days visit. Very nice place.

We need to have tempered expectations , our midfield has been gutted with injury .
Add in two key backs .
Any side missing that much personal will struggle to play well.

I was away for work much of afternoon - only saw last quarter. If we had just a bit of luck (and/or composure) in that last quarter we still would have won that one - despite depleted midfield and rotations way down.

In my opinion, the teams we have played last 3 weeks are terrible. I know we lost two of those games, but we are better than them all.

North fell apart so easily when we applied pressure.
We had dogs on toast till we down rotations and the umpires went to TAB at 3 quarter time.
Saints only JUST got over us despite our injuries/outs.

Frustrating to be 2-2 and injuries going into the Cats game, when we have played some poor opposition.

A few points:

1. We got there early to watch the second half of the Box Hill game. Some of our youngsters, like Dylan Moore, stood out and a few may be in line this week. They were against a Sandringham team that seemed to have a number of high St Kilda draft picks: so, that's where high draft picks end up.

2. For the 2nd time in a fortnight, the footy gods turned their venom on us. I have followed this club since the 1960's and can't remember that happening before. We have occasionally had a game or two where we suffered multiple injuries: back in the day, as long as you didn't lose Lethal Leigh or Dermie, you could manage: these days, the systems are such that one player out can have a huge effect, and having so many injured was a disaster.

3. Despite the injuries, we still almost got there. Tribute to some of the younger players who tried so hard to get us over the line.

4. The real disappointment was missing 4 premiership points which were dangled in front of our face, but were stolen from us. St Kilda really are bad.

We've stepped up from hardship before, and I'm sure we'll be up for the contest this week.

Go Hawks!

When Bartel, Lloyd and Barrett again say Hawthorn were robbed you know we've been pretty ******* stiff with the umpiring this year
We’ve been robbed of two games IMO.. I know we have dropped off significantly in 4th quarters (both times down two players) but if the umpires just stayed out of it and only payed the obvious ones the opposition wouldn’t have kicked late goals and taken the lead both rd 2 and on the weekend. Should be 4-0.

I mean we have some reasons as to why it's happened but we've lost games against average opposition when we've held 5 goal leads twice, think it's going to be a fairly long season.

Wingard seemed to be underfoot on a number of occasions, sometimes getting in the way of teammates surging forward. I'm guessing he's still not used to our structures as yet. Disappointing that he couldn't assert his influence a little more in the last when we had injuries and the game was on the line, considering what we paid for him.

Yes we should be unbeaten. After Mitchell went down I thought he meant a loss of 4 games for us this season.
You can't tell me he wouldn't of won his fair share out of the middle to stop the Dogs comeback and certainly he would have given
our forwards a few chances in the last qtr yesterday. On the positive side Worpel was just terrific, my man Harry has his best game for the year and Cousins tried hard. Roughy was knackered from doing it in the middle and up forward,he's a warrior!

In all honesty with your depth tested even prior to the injuries, Saints should really have thrashed you. While the last quarter would no doubt concern Clarko, you had no right to get as close as you did in the circumstances. There are some positives in this game - kids stood up pretty well.

That’s 2 positive Hawks posts in 2 weeks... gotta go wash my mouth out... 🤐
Very rarely do this but since you are an opposition supporter posting on the Hawks board I think I can add some details you don't seem to be across.

Depth ? -

Saints had 6 players with less than 15 games playing on Sunday including our CHB and our sole Ruckman.

Starting 22 players missing

Hawthorn - Birchall, Burgoyne, Mitchell, Shiels, O'Meara
St Kilda - Hannebery, Carlisle, Roberton, Steven, Geary, McCartin.

I'd have also thrown in Longer but as you would have seen on Sunday Marshall has leapfrogged him.

Injuries?

ToG stats show that both teams only had two players who had less than 70% ToG.

Hawthorn - Frawley (hamstring) 31% and Stratton (concussion) 60%.

St Kilda - McKenzie (concussion) 33% and Parker (calf) 66%.

Frawley and Stratton were our two most experienced back men...McKenzie and Parker who? Come on seriously. Can I add you were kissed on the you know what with that free kick 30m in front to take the lead. Kissed. The umpires were waiting for an opportunity insert themselves well and truly into the narrative. Enjoy the win mate..but seriously don't P5 in our pockets in a losing thread.
