Good to see you posting again Quigs. Coleman has AFL written all over him. We are a fair chance of taking him in the mid season rookie draft if we have a spot available.

Any idea why Cutler is on the outer at the moment? Tom Berry looks the good, if we are looking for a change up in our forward line mix, then I think Berry is the bloke to bring in as a pressure forward. Keays is rampantly dominant at the lower level and is a sensational footballer. I assume they will give him a run soon and hopefully he can step up and become an AFL hard nut footballer. I do believe tagging is his way into AFL football. We need to Brett KIRK him.

We would need a season ending injury to one of our players for a list spot to open up. Or delist a contracted player midseason.

Pretty sure he's open draft.
U19 academy seem to count. GWS got to match for Keiran Briggs last year at pick 34 as a u19 academy player.

Not sure about the midseason draft though.

Why didn't we take him in last year's draft?
Rated him below the guys we took.
There must be something that the recruitment staff don't like, from what I've seen of him albeit not live he looks like he's really got something to offer, particularly impressive up forward last weekend which is not his usual position.

We can absolutely take U19 academy players via academy bidding - we've taken a couple already (Freeman? Bourke? I think), and GWS have taken heaps (Steele, Tiziani, etc).

Only thing I could think of is if Briggs didn’t nominate for the draft when he was 18.
That's actually the one case that means the team can't take an academy player. Not nominating in his draft year prevented the Swans taking Ben Davis as an U19 academy selection.

Believe there's a provision in the rules around academy-tied players for mid-season draft meaning Keidean Coleman can't be taken by other clubs this year.

Interesting wrinkle. I was almost expecting the reverse, given how these things play out.

Eddie really should read the fine print.

Well that's an anomaly that has to be corrected by the AFL. It's keeping someone like Coleman from getting on an AFL list. Considering the Academy club, in this situation being Brisbane already declined an opportunity to exercise their right to nominate Coleman in the draft system, I don't see why he should now be restricted and not be eligible to play AFL if another club wants him and has the list spot.

In this instance Coleman is considerably disadvantaged.

Huge win by the neafl squad and the seniors get embarrassed at the G and not one player is rewarded with promotion for this weeks game. And a 5 day break too. First howler from our match committee this season. Big HOWLER.

Midseason draft rules:
  • Clubs must have a rookie-list spot available or a registered inactive player to be eligible to participate in the draft
  • If an inactive, injured player is fit to play before the season ends, a club can apply to return that player to the primary list in place of another long-term injured player
  • Players must have nominated for the most-recent National Draft or previously been on an AFL list
  • Players who have committed to another year with a Northern or Next Generation Academy are ineligible
  • A delisted player can't be re-selected by the same club in the period following their delisting
  • A retired player, such as Cyril Rioli, or a player who delists himself must be out of the AFL for at least one full season to be eligible
  • Players must submit their contract terms when nominating
  • A player on a short-term contract ending on October 31 the same year receives a minimum of $50,000, with a further $20,000 if they are not re-signed or picked up as a delisted free agent
  • A player on a contract that ends on October 31 the following year is subject to the same terms as any other player
  • An AFL club can re-sign a player as per the current rookie-list rules, otherwise the player becomes a delisted free agent
  • The AFL will send the full nomination list to all AFL clubs and state league bodies
  • An AFL club must pay 50 per cent of any advance payments to a drafted player's previous club before they are eligible to play a game
  • Drafted players who stay in their original state cannot play against their former club unless all parties agree
  • A player can return to their former club for finals if their services are no longer required by the AFL club that drafts them

I like to think Cyril has been enshrined in the actual AFL Rules for all eternity, rather than just usage of him in the article as an example...

I disagree. If we had a slew of losses and we still didn't reward form then I'd agree wholeheartedly. The reality is, this team is 3-1 and the coaches are backing the boys in to bounce back. If we get pumped and make no changes for the Suns then we should worry!
