Match preview: Richmond v Melbourne

Where and when: MCG, Wednesday April 24, 7.35pm
Last time they met: MCG, round five, 2018: Melbourne 8.8 (56) lost to Richmond 15.12 (102)
The final margin hides the fact this was a hotly contested, physical game. Richmond, boosted by an even contribution across the park, wore down the Demons to blow out the difference from 19 points at three-quarter time to 46 by the final siren.

What it means for Richmond:
The continued righting of the ship. After a disastrous opening few rounds with two 40-plus-point losses and injury to star players, the Tigers sit at 3-2 coming into this match.
What it means for Melbourne: Salvaging of pride. Last weekend was a horror show for Melbourne, comprehensively outplayed by an improving St Kilda. In an even season, every win counts, but one over Richmond would be a confidence boost.
How Richmond wins: Speed. Fortunately for the Tigers, they have it in spades. Melbourne were slow and beaten on the outside last week and Richmond is in a good position to exploit it again.
How Melbourne wins: Clearances have been Richmond's Achilles heel the past few years, and Melbourne has some of the stronger inside midfielders in the competition. Using Max Gawn's ruck work to advantage is vital.
The stat: Richmond superstar Dustin Martin regained some form last week against Sydney but playing Melbourne has often been an issue for the midfielder. Martin averages 22 disposals against the Dees, which most players would be pleased with, but it's his second-lowest return.
The match-up: Tom Lynch v Sam Frost
With Oscar McDonald out of favour, Melbourne's one recognised key back is Frost (229th overall in the Official AFL Player Ratings). He will be up against Tom Lynch (207th), who was goalless last week, but kicked 16 in the first four rounds.
It's a big week for: Tom McDonald
It's been a horrible start for the Melbourne key forward. He hasn't been helped by poor delivery inside 50, but McDonald has only kicked two goals this year. Was moved onto the wing against St Kilda in a bid to get him involved.

Big call: Jack Riewoldt will return with a bang after missing three games with a wrist injury and kick four goals.
Prediction: Tigers by 27 points

Big haul coming from Tommy Mac today... he's wasted down back and Goody knows it.
fuuu just imagine we hit him on the chest a couple of times early steaming out the square. If he could sort himself out, we'd look a shitload better.

Our players are a bunch of heartless and gutless pricks who don’t deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as ‘ANZAC’. 34 years I’ve followed this club and they’ve eventually broken me, all I feel for them now is distain. Smash them Tigers.

Could be an Essendon 2012 result, bring them down to our level and scrap a win.

But no, Tigers by 5+ goals you’d think. Just hoping for some continued effort, we’ve just been so feeble all year.

Go dees.

Actually - adding up the total of everything I have seen this year demons wise, I wouldn't actually be deeply surprised if we lost this one by a hundred.

Something is going very wrong. I hope the something turns out to be a someone, because you can sack someones in an effort to recover.

Anyway Go Dees and all that. I'm sure its going to be splendid. I'm going to watch from home and eat my spaghetti. I feel a bit bad about it but I can't face a 70 thousand strong screaming tigers horde tonight.

One thing that is good about this. I was scratching around for a new interest to keep me positively occupied what with the footy season going to shit and all, and I bought a bike and have taken up cycling. I should have done this 20 years ago. Excellent fun. Though I would appreciate someone who is a bit cycley letting me know if the thing with your arse killing you goes away after a while.

If someone could keep posting entertainingly through this tonight it might help me through. Gifs, cat videos or whatever. I'm not fussy.

I liked this post, but really it’s “dislike”.

Thanks to shit play, we’ve lost PG to biking 😭

Personally I think everything is going very right; in 2016 Richmond won one out of their first eight and then snagged a premiership a year later... we're following an established road-map to success here.

Don't believe that flog on SEN that reckons there's coach/player discontent. I've got a man on the inside and he hasn't said anything about that at all, and he's a (very) loose-lipped fella.

Anyway I'm going to the game and I'm going to yell and scream loud enough for all of you absentees. I'm going to spill my contraband on every black and yellow dickhead I see. I'm going to stand up before the goals are kicked. I'm going to call BALL and DELIBERATE every stoppage. It's going to be a ****ing fantastic night at the G!

Girlfriend having her Birthday dinner tonight, thank god. Will give this one a miss.

Well at least someone will be happy tonight.

At some point we will surely turn things around. Who knows when and to what extent.

But there is absolutely zero reason to believe that it will be tonight. I watched the Tigers @ Port game a couple of weeks back when they were missing their 'Big 4' and Houli (I think) and as expected, they played virtually the same as they did with those guys. In addition to having some great players they are the definition of a sporting 'well oiled machine'. I'm not sure what the opposite of a 'well oiled machine' is, but that's exactly what we are right now.

I'm watching tonights game sober ... pray for me.
there's still time to do something about that. I considered watching tonight on mineral water, what with my new health thing and a bike and all, but I broke 15 minutes ago and its too late to reverse now. Hell, I figure I have notched up about a million health credits in the last few days so I figure I can get decently drunk and it doesn't count.

Thanks to you I've just devoted half a minute to wondering about the opposite of a well oiled machine. I think it would probably be a rusted statue.
