As much as I’ve enjoyed Melbourne’s shit start to the year, it’s important that they start playing some decent footy. Going ok tonight, so shouldn’t be finishing below Carlton.

Yup, we need them to figure it out at some point. You'd assume they do on the back end though, seeing the list is rather strong.

They have so many first rounders now, you'd think they should contend in about 3 years.
Wouldn't surprise me if they win their next premiership before we do unfortunately

Ah yes, the old first rounders = success thought. Damn that GWS/GC dynasty really showed how well that pays off.

To be fair to GWS, a lot of their early first rounders were wasted thanks to SOS

Its an interesting question.

Would you rather tank and be an absolute basketcase and win a flag after around 20 years of being that way or would you like to be a Club that every 5 years or so comes close to winning a flag and plays finals fairly consistently going deep into September ?

GC more so, but there is a key point there. Having a large amount of first rounders means sweet **** all on its own. (Also it's for a different point, but GWS incurred that many first rounders over it's history it had to have a high fail rate)

People have a way too simplistic/idealistic mindset when it comes to development. A first rounder + time = gun when really, that line of thought has such a fail rate that it can be inferred that it has never worked that way at all.

Ran out of puff a fair bit. But that was against some pretty serious pressure, should notch up at least 6 wins which should be enough.

In fairness to Carlton 11 of their 1st rounders are mostly rejects from other clubs.
3 of their 1st rounders are virtually cooked, Murphy Kreuzer Thomas
Allow for a couple to be average SOS selections probably Dow and O'Brien
Allow for a few to have injury riddled careers like Docherty
It only leaves a half a dozen serious 1st rounders being Cripps, Weitering, Curnow, SPS, McKay, Walsh.

That's why they are 1 & 4 and 4 from 35. Their depth of class is about as shallow as a kids wading pool.

Getting games into spuds is like giving crap wine more time to age.

In 2016 they had 1st rounders like Sumner, Gorringe, Everitt, Jaksch, Wood, Boekhorst, Lamb,

the only thing that has changed are a few names same spud recruiting policy of rejects or injury prone players

3 GWS players are playing for Collingwood in Adams, Will Hoskin-Elliott and Treloar , Shiel for Essendon. Put them all back in GWS and it would have probably been a dynasty. Holding their players was always going to be their problem as with Gold Coasts . The big Melbourne clubs were always going to win out from the expansion clubs .

Smith for Essendon as well

Put them all back in GWS, and you wouldn't have changed a thing.

They had more then enough talent in 2016, 2017 and 2018 to win it all (to the point talent wise it was GWS -> Daylight -> us mere mortals). Adding more to it doesn't achieve anything because they're already that far ahead on that part.

There list of mids is ridiculous
Cogs, Kelly, Whitfield, Hopper, Taranto, Caldwell, Hately, O'Halloran, Hill to name a few with 2 1st rounders this year.
And Carlton think they've got the best young list.

GWS is an interesting beast, I did a little digging and since the 2011 draft (their entry point) they have accumulated no less then 33 1st round picks. Even if you take out their starting compromised draft (where they had 11 picks) they still have accrued 22 picks in 6 years, averaging a staggering 2.71 1st rounders per draft since inauguration.

Compared these numbers to another team, lets say the Adelaide Crows. Who entered the competition in 1991, (granted our entry was handled very differently, and the draft was admittedly a very different beast back then). Still in the entire history of the Crows they have taken a total of 22 1st round draft picks (including MD selection Brad Crouch, and an end of 1st round priority pick Sam Kerridge).

So even completely disregarding the 2011 compromised draft, the Giants have completely caught up to the AFC's 29 year tally of 1st round draft picks.... In 6 years!

Yup. It's going to be a decade until GWS normalize with the rest of the comp in that regard. Be thankful their coach is dogshit.

Imagine if we had both those picks last year.

Would have set up the AFC for the next 12 years.

Or they're blown by a poor list situation. Players can't develop in the SANFL after a while.

We're not immune to that.

One of the effects of having so many high picks is the ability to get more high picks by trading out talented players who either want out or excess to requirements (as ridiculous as that is) - Boyd, Treloar, Shiel, etc.

This effect will only stop when other clubs don't trade for GWS' players with high picks and we'll probably have to wait for their first batch of start up concession picks to all hit retirement age for this to happen This year they have Bombers' 1st round pick from the Shiel trade last year, as well as their own and if they trade out Coniglio say, they probably get another. Thanks Demetriou, you ****.

Meanwhile, they get to cherry pick which players to concentrate their efforts to keep, and which to let go. They have no excuses for achieving success as far as talent on their list is concerned.

Yeah, that first rounder tactic worked wonders from 2005-07, when Carlton had Pick 1 for 3 consecutive years. Oh wait, it didn't and they failed horribly.

Except it doesn't work like that. Melbourne and Carlton have had heaps of early first rounders on their lists and have both done sweet FA this century.
