Toast David Mundy - 300 Games #Mundy3Hundy

Actually, and a little more interestingly, 10 players selected in the 2003 draft represented Freo in some capacity throughout their careers.

I remember a time he was bagged mercilessly on here especially by the aforementioned. Moving him to the midfield was the best decision Harv's ever made.
Now it’s Ross’ time to do that with Cerra. Almost identical career paths

I don't understand why he's not playing there already. Bit like why I never understood why Blakely was playing there. I don't think, when you're rebuilding, that it's a needs must situation. Surely you develop the players in the positions you expect them to play in the future?

Dunn wasn’t really a win. Croad went on to win AA and a premiership. Rekey didn’t play enough for a pick 10.

pfft! AA and premiership v an 8 game player? I know who I'd take!

To be fair, it wasn't a strong draft in 2003. Inbetween taking Dunn and picking Mundy the list of players taken were; Waters, (the great one) Murphy, Stanton, Watts, Chaplin, Willoughby, Morrison and Spaanderman. So realistically we went with what we thought was the best which was a 2 time under 18's AA and captain of under 18's Victoria.

Same with AP. McPharlin spent a bit too much time up forward though. I’d back AP just as much now too. His work against Cameron was elite. Him and Hamling just as good as McPharlin/Dawson

AP/Hamling combo might take the edge over McPharlin/Dawson, because Hamling can do a few more things than just fist a ball. But McPharlin is still the bomb for mine, just supreme in the air and so athletic. Rate AP and perhaps at the end of his career I'll change my mind, but right now I still think there has been none better in a Dockers uniform and among the very best in the AFL era in that key back position.

Except that Mundy was picked as a tall fwd/back - that's what most of his juniour play was. It was a bit left of centre to try Mundy there and Harvey should certainly get credit for it.

Cerra is more clearly a mid type player and, arguably, should be playing more there already if not very soon.

Is that the era talking though? What if Cerra was drafted when Mundy was?

Yeah, that's right. Players like Mundy, even Fyfe, were predominantly drafted as med/tall fwds/backs - but had or developed the various attributes required to be mids. Harvey was a bit of a trend setter in moving Mundy and Pav there though, it was done, but not that much and not with such permanency. Near a decade later and, as long as the player has a bit of class and mobility, anything around 182-192cm or even a bit more is often considered midfield material.

Either way, Mundy was never drafted as a mid - it was Harvey that encouraged him to build his game in such a way to play there, and the rest is history. Cerra was drafted with an eye to playing midfield, and did as an u/18 (at least quite regularly) - there in lies the difference and that's all I'm really saying.

Think you missed my point a bit. Well aware of the history. But what I'm saying is, if someone with Cerra's attributes and size etc was drafted in 2003, what would he have been?

Right, yes ... who knows, possibly a medium fwd ... so, yes, I get your point now.

To be fair, the Fyfe type of midfielders weren’t widely accepted or too risky at the time. Koutafides was the ultimate in that regards but in the 90s and early 2000s, very few of those types existed. Pavlich and Goodes pushed in the middle around 2005 onwards. So Mundy is now a ‘short’ type of midfielder- well plays like one- compared to Fyfe, Cripps, Dangerfield, Dustin Martin.

excellent article on the Freo site quoting Ross: "So from me to David, I’m grateful for everything you’ve given to me as a coach and more importantly to the Fremantle Football Club, we love you as a person and a player."
I like the word Love....displays more than just an appreciation as a player, but genuine love for Mundy, the man :)
Whoops...can feel eyes watering already....must be hay fever...

Let’s not underrate tonight’s significance- 300 games is a massive achievement that’s only bestowed for the greats of our game.

I’ll have to remind myself tonight when I’m pissed off at something stupid freo do that I’m actually watching one of the AFL greats do his thing.

When he retires, just like Pav, I’ll be able to look back when I’m a grumpy old man and remember how good this guy Mundy was

Yeah, it is, you’re absolutely right but I must admit that a very small touch of gloss came off for me when I saw that Westoff has played 250!

He would have been a mid. Like Judd, who is taller.

I never realised how much bigger than Pav he is.

On another note, (spoiler alert) I just received a 13 year AND a 2 year trophy from bigfooty a couple of minutes ago. I'm starting to get the tingles that theGav56 might be on the banner alongside Mundy3Hundy.
