With both the permission of and knowledge of the senior coach. Simply couldn't have happened if Hird had acted appropriately and safeguarded his players, which should have always been his greatest priority. He instead chose his own pursuit of glory over the health and safety of the entire playing group he was charged to protect. That's a monumental failure of integrity in leadership that no amount of time can erase.
And it was Hird who chose to institute a 'solution' to that issue that involved injecting mysterious and experimental substances into the bodies of players for whom he was responsible. Whatever part anyone attributes in all this to Dank, Robinson, Thompson or others, Hird had every opportunity to stop this whole debacle before it started. As it is, he was beguiled by the promise of a short cut via compromise and abandoned any semblance of honesty about his own conduct and a duty of care for others as a result.
Brilliant footy player, no question. But as the man who could have easily averted the worst failure of leadership and care for a playing group in the history of the game, he proved to be an appalling senior coach. So if Essendon wants to go back there in a vain desire to somehow recapture the glory years of his playing days, both Hird and the club truly deserve each other.

Absolutely great player but should never coach again. AND if the AFL had any integrity they would not allow it.
Sadly from my direct experience is a fair bit up himself. But mebbe he has changed.
Why would SDK go there? Currently in a team about to crack in on finals, a team who are top of the ladder and a Premiership contender, and Geelong will give him a ridiculous contract over the next few years as we have guys retire/leave.
Or go to Saints for a little bit more money, likely get goals kicked on you every week due to a weak, lazy midfield, and probably play finals once every 4 years but do nothing the rest of the time.
Weird.
Like I could understand if SDK went to Carlton to be with his brother, but thats the only move that makes sense.
If the Saints get JDG its because they will pay him so far over what he is worth he couldn't turn it down.

Hird shouldn’t ever and won’t ever coach again. He’s forfeited that privilege.
360 Slobbo brought up the fact that months or years ago he said to Gerry that Hird coming back could be part of the forgiveness process and break the curse.
Awful idea. Clean out the board. Clear out the recruiters (Dodo especially) and bring in coaches with new ideas, who AREN'T Essendon people. They have been such a rabble for so long now.
And there is the whole problem, everybody forgives the golden child, but what has HE done to deserve that?
apart from Hird, I agree that the cleanup should happen, should have long ago actually.
