I agree with a lot of what you said, but I don't think Hopper will end up being tier 1 compo for free agency. Most likely end of first rnd. I think he will be on 600-700k, I think that would be just short of tier 1 compo.

It’s the AFL’s team …. they are getting tier 1.

Just a reminder of similar recent trades where the team was laughed at for paying overs.

Treloar + 28 (Hibberd) for picks 7 (Weiderman) and 2016 pick 8 ( Griffen Logue). Both those players will be at different clubs by the end of week for bugger all trade.

Wingard for Burton and pick 15 (Duursma)

Neale + 30 (Tom berry) for Pick 6 (which was on traded for hogan then May and became whichever king is at GC) and pick 19 (o’halloran)

Shiel + F2 (ronin O’Connor) for pick 9 (Caldwell) and F1 pick 14 (Bergman). Caldwell is at Essendon anyway and Bergman looks good.

Tim Kelly + pick 57 for pick 14 (Cooper Stevens) + pick 24 (jeremy sharp but cats got pick 11 from gc fit him) + 33 (Nick Bryan) and F1, and most of this was packaged up for Jezza next year.

Cameron + 2 x F2 for pick 13 (Connor Stone), pick 15 (Ryan Angwin) and pick 20 (Brayden Cook)

Would we be happy if and it's a big if
Graham was traded to Crows for pick 23

If he decides he wants to go I’d be happy with 23. But given we are going for a flag I’d prefer to keep him.

If we were genuinely rebuilding I’d jump at 23 for Graham to try and get in some elite talent.

Always makes me laugh this gif. How happy with himself is Jean-Claude? [emoji38]

People knocking Blair, yet we got pick 19 for CCJ from a club that could have taken him for free.

Good chat guys

We all know the PSD is an idle threat most of the time.

12 months ago CCJ was a up and coming key forward who was dominating at VFL level and showed lots of promise in his few AFL opportunities. Given the development already put into him and his potential as a 200cm key forward who can chop out in the ruck, a future second round pick wasn't a huge price to pay.

12 months later CCJ hasn't kicked on and Norf were worse than most imagined they could be, despite many having low expectations to begin with. That pick could have been 21-23, add in a few compensation picks for free agents, a couple of F/S and academy selections and that pick becomes is a lot closer to pick 30 than 20.

I’ve seen a gazillion posts in here that are completely mis-reading the Hopper and TT situations, so here is my assessment.

- Hopper wants to leave GWS, but is contracted for another season.

- TT did not want to leave, and GWS offered him $650k over 4 x seasons ($2.6m). It was nowhere near his market value for what would be his contract to set him up for life, so when Richmond offered $5m over 7-years, he chose Richmond. He also did this knowing we had the draft picks and cap space to make it happen (he wanted GWS to get fair value) with a minimum of fuss. As so it happened…. 12 & 19 - fair deal and done.

- GWS have let go Bruhn, Hill and TT. They don’t now desperately need Hopper’s money out of the cap. Yes, they’d like it out to give them flexibility, but given they had $650k set aside for TT it’s not dire if Hopper stays.

- GWS know they are likely to finish bottom 8 next season. This means if they keep him and Hopper leaves as a 26yo FA, they will get tier one compo, so anywhere from pick #1 to #9.

- GWS also know Hopper has been courted by Richmond and has chosen Richmond, and it’s incumbent upon us to get the deal done.

Let’s be clear. If we don’t get Hopper this trade period, he’s almost no chance to choose us as a FA next year and Geelong will get him for NOTHING.

GWS have the whip hand as they will get a top-10 pick in a very strong draft next year when he leaves as a FA …. if they have a really down year it could be a top-3 pick. So they’re not going to accept unders.

So if we dig our heels in as many seem to want to do, this is how things end up:

1. We don’t get Hopper … ever. This hurts our flag chances in the next 5-years - with Cotch going and Prestia fragile TT is probably not enough midfield re-enforcement for a flag tilt.

2. Another team, likely Geelong, gets Hopper for nothing except salary end of 2023.

3. Our great reputation for getting trades done for the player’s benefit takes a dive. If we get both TT and Hopper players will not hesitate in choosing Richmond in future.

So whilst we don’t want to ‘give away the farm’, the downside of not getting this trade done is pretty substantial for us which I don’t think most people seem to realise.

So Blair is a genius by making the Taranto trade first thus making it easier for them to retain/demand more for Hopper. Doesn't make much sense.

So North have given up 2 no 1 picks for 2 , 3 & a pick around 10ish or potentially even worse ?

Also the Eagles giving up pick 2 for 2 first rounders ?

Love to be a fly on the wall in those meetings where they all thought these were good ideas

Starting to look more likely every passing hour.

Has hindered the RFC ability to look elsewhere too.
Lol no it hasn’t. The deal will get done, not if but when and hasn’t hindered anything, we aren’t going to trade for the sake of it, our targets are Taranto and Hopper, if we missed out we aren’t going to move on to get a crab like Tom Mitchell or Matt Crouch just cos.
