yeah mate.... thats a big chunk of the engine... marshall, steele, macrae, wood, hill. then you have your two best KPD.

you'd be lucky to replace one in one off season.

We are going hard for TDK + SDK, which will cover Roma and Dougs. Then you add the internal growth of Pou, Owens, Nas, Wilson, Trav, Tauru and Garcia and there is your future engine [emoji91]

All of them except Macrae have at least 3 years left (touch wood)

I am already convinced that:

Pou replaces Macrae
Wilson replaces Hill

That leaves Marshall, Steele and Wood who we seem to have plans for successors already but there's still plenty of time to replace them if they don't work out:

Dodson for Marshall (very uncertain but rucks, as seen in recent premiership teams, can be easily replaced with cheap players from other teams)
Windhager/Travaglia/Garcia/Boxshall/Carroll/Stocker for Steele (surely one of them is a win)
Byrnes/Windhager for Wood (this one is tougher because Wood is such a unique athlete but wingers are usually easier to mould as long as a player has aerobic ability)

Then there's guys like Clark, Dow, Hastie, Hall who could also be a part of that long-term midfield

As for KPPs; Tauru, Barrat, Caminiti, Sharman, King should be the future. All we need for that group is probably Keeler to assert himself as a ruck/fwd then a genuine monster full back (eyes on Cody Curtin at this year's draft)

The majority of that list are still good for three or more years.

Cordy would be squeezed out anyway, and most likely will be gone at the end of this season.

Jones is a depth mid, till players like Garcia displace him.

But the others are not likely to gone anytime soon.

Roma is not heading off to a retirement home for many years yet.

Howard will unfortunately miss alot of this year, but until we find someone better is capable of doing a reasonable job.

This could be Websters last season, but then again maybe not. But there area raft of younger players from Stocker down who can play backpocket. Our Irish recruit O'Connell is showing signs that he could well bloom this year as one such option.

Butlers has years left in him. Hall is already looking like a likely small forward. Jury still out on Collard.

Hill I believe will be like the Energizer Bunny, will just keep going and going.

Macrae I see a good 3 years out of.

Wood is superfit, so likewise.

Steele probably more than 3.

Sincs another who is superbly fit and is just a machine these days.

Wilkie is an exceptionally smart player and that, and his superb durability to date, will keep in the game for many years yet.

There are only a few of the above who will leave us soon. The others are going to need young players to improve to eventually squeeze them out.

Realistically we need our most recent draft crop to show as much progress and promise as the previous crop.

With this years draft being supposedly weak, we will need everything to go right to somehow find a couple of gems in the draft whilst still raiding the bargain bins at each club and of course trying to land the elusive big fish or 2.

For all the people on here that say they don’t care if we make finals this year (because we aren’t winning the premiership) just think about how much added risk missing the finals adds to players who are ooc wanting to leave, and how much harder it is to land the so called big fish. Nobody aspires to play for a perennial non-finalist. We still need to be adding solid depth for another couple of years if we are any chance at getting out of mid table purgatory.

There was another Collard recruited in early 2000s. All the BF phantom drafts had him in the first round if not top 5. Got drafted at 31. Played very few games and promptly delisted.

Collard being in a second year with limited showing is tracking to Olli Horton of the last draft except that he’s been given a long contract.

That's a bit random and a bit premature I would have thought.

Well he would want to show something this year , as much as he has all the skills that doesn't mean he will make it, he is not a 200cm ruck , he is a small forward that shouldn't need 3-4 years to have an impact

Think I read the other day he played wing for a while during match sim and did ok - like it - gets him into the game with a few touches rather than freezing as a small forward with limited opportunities - difficult position which can negatively impact your mindset if you don't/cant contribute.

In short - even a couple of 5 minute wing opportunities in the first half might get him involved and warm as he will have to work hard.

Small forward, like PURE small forward is argurably the toughest spot on the ground to play. Youre so reliant on other players executing to bring you into the game.

Weve had a forward line with no cohesion (and Max at times doesnt even compete) all of which makes it even harder for Lance. Even the shit teams have generally had one decent forward to play off of (North has Larkey for example).

This is a good point. As a small forward you need to have your teammates look for you, know where you are and what sneaky tactics you have up your sleeve.

Part of this is getting games, but part of it is endearing yourself to your teammates. I'm not sure Collard is doing that like Higgins.

Yeah probably.

But let's see how he goes, still think the comment was a bit premature for a guy who's just had 1 season.
