Dawson isn't that quick. Certainly not slow either but he's got a talent for using the width of the ground to find space. He's wily, arches his back, fends off, flanks, he doesn't beat them with raw speed.

Bit in this, very hard for anyone to project where he is in 3-4 years time.

AA and dominant player doesn't feel outrageously optimistic, but equally could see a bits and pieces wing/flanker still trying to reach his potential as being within the realms of possibility.

Mind you, don't you think you back yourself to ensure you reach his potential (given ostensibly the signs of his character are that he'll hold up his side of the bargain in reaching his potential)

Liked his last two games a lot. Should finish up at CHF (tex will be retired).

Imagine we picked up a Fogarty type player next year in the draft - reasonably high draft pick, fairly high ceiling. What do we do with this player? Do we stick with 3 talls after Walker leaves to try and make room for them? Do we leave them in the SANFL for 3-4 years except when one of the main two is injured? What's this player's incentive to stay at the club, assuming one of the main two doesn't do a knee or something?

Golumless is right - if we were to pick up key forward depth it would be a rookie/late pick/trade type situation like a Welsh or Burgess. We absolutely should not be recruiting a key forward with any sort of draft capital. We are spoilt for forwards already. If Walker retires at the end of this year we will move to having two key forwards in the best 22 and could still have T. Murray/Burgess as cover, not to mention that Dawson and Curtin could be capable forward options as well.

You could move me on a defender maybe.

If we did get a gun forward, even at Fog's level it will be a few years before he's consistent.

Which is then a good thing as we have a 21 year old come into the team gunning it up in a few years, and Fog will be what, 28?

So not really. Theres some massive fails in those losing sides as well.

Sydney having a 3 tall setup despite most of those guys being rubbish is a big part of why they lost, likewise Dogs in 2021.

Sorry but that’s a bizarre takeaway, you’re just ignythat most of winning teams chose to be as tall if not taller.

lol thats not the reason i left it out, 2017 was the exception not the rule.

Even richmond knew this which is why they immediately chased Lynch.

i never said the talls were match defining in gfs.

I said that contending teams prefer to play multiple talls ahead of the ball, there is very strong evidence to support this (even the available options are limited)

We have been able to play three talls because Thilthorpe is so dynamic and Fogarty/Walker are both good field kicks, and we have some quality pressure players in ANB/Keays/Rachele around them. With a different mix of players, a different setup would be needed.

Quality of player anywhere on the field is key to any game plan.

Its an interesting question as in soccer, top end coaches have a preferred system and will actively recruit players to suit that system. Yes, its much simpler to change your squads in soccer than AFL with our draft system. But at one stage Carlo Ancelotti employed the christmas tree formation at AC Milan - ie Keeper, then a 4-3-2-1. Amorim at Man U is wedded to 3 centrebacks and primarily 2 holding midfielders.

In our game, you can't really do that as we are rigid in how we set up across the ground so nuance comes in the form of preferred coaching methods. Denis Pagan had the Pagans paddock where he played Wayne Carey primarily one out inside forward 50 - was revolutionary at the time. The of course you had the era of the flood and slingshot ball movement so pace and adaptability become the key to that system.

If a coach can exploit a 3 tall forward set up by engineering a game plan that works for it up the ground they will do it.

Realistically are Freo or West Coast overly appealing options right now? He might go home at some stage, but you'd think he would want to play another 4 or 5 years here whilst we are moving upwards and then look at a move home when the West Coast are possibly on the upside.

Better then than now. 2025-2026 and all you are doing is throwing a first round pick into the bin. One that could be used to strengthen actual needs, hello inside midfield and half back flank.

Different story late in the draft, as a late flutter for a KPF is somewhat worth it, but not something I'd personally worry about unless Hamish truly loved a prospect.

Our list is approaching a win-now position where these more pressing positional needs should be addressed by trading in ready-made and proven players. If we have our first round pick on draft night we’ve probably already failed that. In that case, I don’t see a mid-to-late first round half-back or midfielder (especially considering they’d preferably be big-bodied) contributing much more short-term than C. Curtin.

I also think you’re underestimating his ability to play both ends of the ground. We’ll potentially/likely be losing Walker, Burgess and Butts. We’ll need capable short-term depth at both ends of the ground. And as much as I like Keane/Murray, their long-term partnership is far less secure than Thilthorpe/Fogarty.
