100% I don't see the upside to getting Aleer at all. He's not that tall (same as Barratt more or less) and seems lost on field with no skillset setting him apart. I'm sure there's better options available and considerably cheaper.
Throw the 900 grand being touted for him at mids from the Nepo clubs not getting a gig.
Agreed - the price is crazy for someone who has showed as little as him.

Especially when he come in as a questionable best 22 player if we look it as Cordy going out and Aleer coming in (presuming Dougal gets a 1 year deal or if he doesnt, we would still need to bring in another fullback option because I cant see us having any less on the list overall).

Usually there is room for 3 KPDs - Wilkie lock. Tauru we will prioritise to get games into. Is Aleer a full back lock over Caminiti and Howard? Unsure. At 900k he would want to be but I dont think it's clear cut.

Port will want a lot more than a late first for Bergman.

He was very good tonight.

But Carlton were woeful.

He's still a project rather than a certain star. He's definitely worth a decent first round pick but not a top 4 pick IMO. That pick 4 really needs to go to the draft on a mid.

They’re clearly having a crack and obviously Lyon has some pull
I’ve heard Jimmy Bartel - against the normal run of media doomsayers- comment multiple times that he’s bullish on Saints with the kids they’re bringing through …maybe some in the industry can see it …at least they’re firing the right shots for a gun mid!

We are doing the work so should get results if we keep on the path. It really isn't that hard if you do it systematically.

Love a personal anecdote, almost as much as absolutely ridiculous medical assertions

You do get very worked up. Have some camomile tea and a lie down.

I just checked hia stats and he racked up 18 disposals tonight which I was surprised by cause it didnt seem like he got near it .... most worrying though ia that he only took 1 mark and laid 1 tackle

He looks a shell of a player compared to last year when he was emerging as a genuine gun ...... so yes .... praying he has checked out

We can only hope because there is no way he is worth 1.7m a year on his current form ... not a chance in hell

He's a potential player. His most consistent form was the start of this season. He is often good when Carlton play badly funny enough. We are basically doing it to screw Carlton for SOS. No sensible list manager pays that for a project ruck. I reckon Moyle or even Max Knobel would be better cheap options.

I'm not as bullish on the potential recruits as others here. Glass half empty as a longtime saints supporter probably. Hope I'm wrong.

Re: Aleer, just remember when Melbourne traded in [PLAYERCARD]Jake Lever[/PLAYERCARD] and Stephen May. The Hawks got in Barrass and Battle. Here we are offering big money on potential to a guy that's barely played any games. Is Aleer going to be as good as [PLAYERCARD]Sam Taylor[/PLAYERCARD], Jack Buckley, Paine from Brisbane etc? I don't think so.

Re: TDK, does some good things, but how different is he to Marshall when playing against stronger types like Cameron and Sweet? Is he worth $1.7m? What does this do the culture of the club and how do the other saints players perceive that? Will they feel slighted?

Re: Bergman, yeh he did some good things last night, but he also missed a few targets. Another tagger? Once again, he has potential to be a good mid but how long can he sustain it and how good can he get? Seems okay but as many in here refer to 'moving the needle', I don't believe he does that.

I just think we've become impatient when for so long we were on the right track of drafting quality youngsters and doing moneyball picks like Max Hall which is great. I think we need to continue on that path a bit longer and keep looking for low price gems rather than go on what seems like a panic buying spree. Like how GWS got Bedford from Melb and turned him great. But what would I know.

Aleer seems like even more of an odd choice considering Hammer is showing a bit in defence with no experience there.
I like Caminiti but it’s not as if he’s looking like Jeremy McGovern down there. But either way what happens if he gets injured? If we can lock in Aleer, Caminiti and Tauru as our long term key defenders I’d be pretty happy with that.

Trading Steele would mean we are a healthy 31 year old away from Clark and Dow being our 2 most experienced mids (for the 10 games per season they are fit).

🤮🤮🤮🤮
At some point I think we need to cut the cord though. I don't think both Macrae and Steele in our midfield are getting us anywhere soon, and getting more midfield minutes into Pou/Garcia/Boxshall is what's needed.

Anyone got the Matt Rowell story?
He “seriously considered” us apparently…..

Anyone got the Matt Rowell story?

St Kilda emerged as serious contender for Matt Rowell before he re-signed at Gold Coast

Matt Rowell signed a big new Gold Coast contract this week. But the Victorian clubs were set to come with their monster offers – including St Kilda, who emerged as a serious contender.

Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell ignored monster deals from Victorian clubs including St Kilda to stay at the Suns, who emerged as a serious contender for his services.
Rowell was largely uninterested in the vast sums rivals like St Kilda and other clubs were prepared to offer.

While the Saints did not lodge an official offer, it is understood that they indicated how much they might pay him, which would have been similar to the $1.7 million-per-season offers for Carlton’s Tom De Koning and GWS mid Finn Callaghan.

The Melbourne-raised midfield star signed for two seasons at the Suns in a deal announced on Thursday.

While it had been reported Rowell met with Essendon, Collingwood, Geelong and the Western Bulldogs, St Kilda was just as keen.

Rowell took the interest from St Kilda seriously given he is aware of what the club is attempting to build under Ross Lyon.

Callaghan rebuffed the St Kilda offer, while De Koning is considered likely to accept that seven-season deal.

But clubs never lodged offers, given Rowell was yet to make up his mind about his future and has never been defined by money across his career.

The two-year deal would likely see him receive up to $1.2 million from the Suns per season but the financial discussions only started last Thursday.

Rowell is desperate to win a premiership on the Gold Coast and while he will be richly rewarded finances are never front of mind when it comes to making decisions on his football future.

Rowell took his time to kickstart those discussions but was finally ready to commit in a deal the Suns admit would likely have gone another way in recent years.

Instead their own path to success is clear, with Rowell prepared to pass up millions to stay for a premiership tilt.

Coach Damien Hardwick admitted he had been nervous about Rowell’s meetings with rival coaches even as the club chases its own off-season targets.

“We’ve got some really exciting players we are talking to that we are really excited at the prospect of coming,” he said.

“It’s not something any coach feels overly comfortable about, but we are all big boys.

“Anytime you are an interstate club and he’s a Victorian boy and he’s got the overtures at home, it will come calling,” he said.

“What Matt sees, he’s very close to the playing group. He can see what this club will eventually become. We’ve got some work to do, but he sees the possibility of what may be.”

He quipped about his own $2000 fine for a flipped bird in the coaches box, delivering a two-fingered salute as he said: “It’s a two year deal.”

Then as he flipped his fingers around he laughed as he delivered his punchline: “Oh shit, how am I going.”

Our improvement next year will ofc be catalysed by the new recruits etc., but I think its more about the kids starting to hit their straps whilst also getting a couple back from injury (Henry, Pou, a full back, hopefully King)

Our 2023 intake of Wilson, Garcia, Hastie, Arie, Collard will be into their 3rd years which by trend is a common year for breakout contenders. Pou would be pretty much a 3rd year player too given his injuries this year. Dilena said in an interview that he genuinely thought Pou would've taken the next step this year. Caminiti is yet to do a full pre-season in defence. Tauru yet to have a pre-season. Travaglia another year in the gym. Henry a full off-season to refresh that knee

I dont think the 10 players above 29 in best 22 comment is accurate - wasn't that only for the game against the Dogs? Jones is an automatic exclusion from that and if we trade Marshall & Steele then thats down to 7. Webster is replaced by LOC/Hastie then we're down to 6 which seems like a sweet spot. Butler also a guy we can easily replace if Lance pulls his head in. Realistically, the only 29+ guys who make a significant difference to our side over the kids are Wilkie, Sinclair, Macrae, Wood, and arguably Hill/Steele depending on how you interpret the leadership and cultural side of things

Realistic best 22 right now if everyone was fit

B: Webster, Howard, Wilkie
HB: Nas, Caminiti, Sinclair
C: Hill, Steele, Wood
HF: Higgins, Sharman, Hall
F: Butler, King, Owens

Foll: Marshall, Macrae, Phillipou
Int: Windhager, Wilson, Stocker, Clark

29 or over

Webster
Howard
Wilkie
Sinclair
Hill
Steele
Wood
Butler
Marshall
Macrae
