Hopkins might be a chance.

Ware, Morrison and Olliver also for their longevity, and carrying poor teams for many years. None probably top 5 anymore, but Ware and Olliver used to have their names up high in the old version of the Whitten Stand, don't think Alby did?

Morrison an early leading goalkicker, kicked 50 in his first season as a 19yo, including the first ever double figure total in a VFL game by a Bulldog. 18 years later took the field as the oldest Bulldog to ever pull on the jumper, 2 year stint in the VFA and war service in between. If you were listing the 10 best Bulldogs from 1925 to the late 60s, it would be Hopkins, Morrison, Ware, Olliver, Sutton, Whitten, Collins, Schultz, Bisset with Donald, Jillard and a few of the 54 team fighting for 10th place.

Sadly a lot of these guys get forgotten these days. Hopkins VFL record is "only" 151 games, but he actually started in the VFA in 1923, playing in premiership teams in his first 2 seasons, as well as the Championship of Victoria game. Captain coach in 1930, tied for the Brownlow that year but missed out because the designated winner played one less game(!), second twice as well, went to Yarraville as captain coach in 1935 (when they were the "Villains" - how good is that as a nickname?!), led them to their first flag, and was runner up in the old Recorder Cup to boot.

And all this in 17 and 18 game seasons and no finals. Stacks up well against any modern great. Ware and Olliver likewise, and they like Sutton as well had their careers interrupted by military service during WW2. Given the versatility of Hopkins and Morrison, and mobility of Ware and Olliver, all 4 would fit nicely into the 2025 game... and probably suit Bevo's mantra!

Edit: oops, sorry Wally D and JJ, but I missed Harry Hickey, would take 10th place!

4) Sam Darcy can be stopped

At three-quarter-time of Thursday night's clash against North Melbourne, the talented Sam Darcy had just five disposals and a goal from a 50m penalty next to his name from the Bulldogs' 51 inside-50s. Fifth-gamer Wil Dawson was given the mammoth task of manning up on the 208cm key forward and did an exceptional job. Darcy did finish the game with four goals, but three came in the final term when the game was well and truly out of contention. The focus on Darcy likely played a role in [PLAYERCARD]Aaron Naughton[/PLAYERCARD] having a season-best night with five goals, proving you can't measure Darcy's impact alone on goals and marks. But you'd suspect opposition teams will look at Dawson's efforts in this game as they look to stop Darcy in the run to finals, a task that has looked near impossible at times this season. - Phoebe McWilliams

Kicked 4.2 took 6 marks and got his arms chopped all night but ok he can be stopped lol

It's good to know that if Darcy plays another 250 games and is stopped for all of them he'll kick over 1000 goals for his career.

She's right. He can be.

Just have to commit crimes against him.

Unfortunately, games don’t end at 3 quarter time and Darcy doesn’t get any smaller as opposition defenders get more fatigued. Won’t be the last time Darcy shreds a team up late.

I haven't heard anything but supporters around me on Thursday and a few posts here suggested Bevo should ask for a 'please explain'.

Do we know if anything came of the non calls and questionable defending Darcy received?

I'd hate to think those decisions are given the green light because no doubt other teams will employ the same tactics.

A true champion like Darcy will find a way to adapt so I'm not really worried especially if it allows more attractive looks for Naughton and co.

You know what they call a bloke who can kick three or four even in quiet games where they’ve been held? A Coleman medalist

Phoebe. Phoebe. Phoebe...

I guess that Dawson just switched off thinking his job was done at 3qtr time then.

At which point the game was still technically in the balance. That was until Darcy put his 211cm on the scale and kicked 3 of the last 5 goals of the game.

Its an odd take on things when Darcy is being graded on such a curve that 4.2 is seen as having a quiet night thus setting the blueprint for how to deal with him.

I imagine that the next time he has a quiet night that he will go from being called a unicorn to being called a donkey. Such is the idiotic coverage of the game.

for mine darcy also adjusted as the game went on, i may be imagining this but he seemed to plant his feet late in the game instead of jumping at the ball, to take the tunneling out of the equation

The arm chopping I am resigned to. Unless we dress Sam up in a dark blue jumper and put a curly wig on his head I doubt he will receive the curnow treatment. It is the tunnelling that concerns me, deeply. That shit needs to be stamped out yesterday. PS new user name. I realised my previous name dog_days_r_over had a very unfortunate double entendre that was not intentional.

Hi guys sorry to intrude. My youngest is a little bulldog and I would like to take him to the bulldogs training so he can meet his heroes. I’m told there is a training session tomorrow at 9:30am. As it’s now after hours I can’t contact the club. Can anyone confirm this or advise of other times during the holidays.
Cheers

Good luck. And good on you for letting him follow his passion (and the only true path ;)).

Thanks for the help guys. Much appreciated.

I had one win with one boy. The little bulldog said to me one day “dad, I’m gunna go for the bulldogs like mum or otherwise it would be 3 on 1 Cats in our family”
You can’t be disappointed with him for that

Best of luck for the rest of the season guys

AFL360 tonight has ex coaches Simmo and Horse in with the umpires on the ARC, watching Bulldogs v North. Horse of course had to give an example of a free kick that was wrong given to the Bulldogs, pity he didn’t comment on the tunnelling by his old team on Sam Darcy.
