Yeah of course, makes sense clubs would resist - but this is where WAFC & WAFL need some strong leadership.
  • What is the future of WA football?
  • How does WA football want to position itself in the country?
  • How should they respond to the existential risks of a national second tier competition, or the barriers around youth talent development?
  • how can this vision be sold to WAFL clubs to help them buy in and accept necessary change?

Having a perma-shit & nearly uncompetitive WCE team in the AFL and WAFL is not good for WA footy. Its's been 4.5yrs with little sign of improvement.

Either a merger with another WAFL club is required, or WAFL clubs lose some of their zone to fit Beagles.

Otherwise, in all likelihood, WAFL will become the third tier competition. Where an AFL seconds team gets to pillage the best of the WAFL to play alongside their AFL listed players.
or play country footy for good coin or ammos and not lose their weekend in travel in some vain hope they might end up on a Afl list.
The Power and Crows have been pushing the Afl to join a Afl reserves and at the moment the Afl don't want it.

WAFL really shooting themselves in the foot with their resistance to change IMO.

Would be a good opportunity for those WAFL players that get picked up too - playing within an AFL team's system, fewer clubs (in comparison to all the state leagues currently), regularly up against AFL listed players. If you perform, it's a smaller step to AFL.
Careful, you'll be reminded about how lucky you are that you grace the same planet as the West Perth Falcons very soon.

We have those selections and more [well, assuming Oscar leaves]. The way the academy's work is other clubs can bid on your players and if you want to keep your player you have to match the pick with points to the value of where the bid comes. If we bid on these Brisbane and Gold Coast players then they have to pay what they are worth, and it is possible that Gold Coast having to pay the market rate for 3 of their players might result in them not having points to match their remaining players. Which would mean someone, not necessarily us as I have no idea if he's any good, could bid on Kalani White and GCS would not be able to match for him.

This trade was just an example of what we should do, smash the northern clubs. To be honest I think it should go further and we should make a pact between us, Richmond, Essendon and Saints to all bid on academy players and all refuse to deal with academy clubs for picks harvesting. Given 3 of us have double picks in the top 10 and the Saints will also have a high pick, we could potentially collude by deciding our own draft order ahead of draft night and game out how to exhaust Gold Coasts picks the most efficient way in order for them to lose access to 1-2 targets [who would then fall to whichever club had been predetermined to take that player]. Plan falls down though given Gold Coast probably only really really want the first 3 players and could still match for them, and that someone is going to want to do a pick swap with them, but I dream of the clubs like us who have been screwed by the compromised draft getting together and making a statement.

Won't this piss them off for any future deals with us though?

I kinda hate the idea of a national ressies comp. The "V" FL they have now is all over the shop. The AFL has made a mess of trying to have the VFA and the old reserves, U/19s set up and the Coates League and the NEAFL etc. It makes no sense that Southport are in it, or that there are 7 reserves teams, two AFL affiliated teams and 7 non affiliated teams just in Victoria.

Do we really want to be flying another 30 or 40 people (I don't know how many coaches, staff etc. the Beagles have on gameday) cross country every second week? If that's the path we're going to go down then every team should effectively have a list of 70 or 80 players. What's the point of being an "Eagles" player flying 10 times a year if you don't really get paid and can't actually be selected for the AFL side? It can't be truly clean while AFL clubs are disconnected from junior development via the draft.

Except CDT isn't a forwards arseh*le. There is no spot in the side for both Ethan Read and CDT.
He looks like he could be potentially a (large) midfielder judging by the videos I can find.

Seems to be a smooth mover, pretty clean first touch, good below his knees.
Still raw AF and doesn't look a Ruck but maybe a mid/2nd ruck.

Where has being nice got us? The draft is a finite pool of players each year. We don't need to be helping Gold Coast get an extra first or pay 1000 points less or whatever.

Paid overs for Tim Kelly. Paid overs for Liam Baker. Let Willie Rioli go for peanuts. The less said about recent re-signings the better.

Meanwhile Bailey Smith is 24 and will probably make the All Australian team and Geelong gave up pick 17 for him. Damaged goods (massive flog) or not, their hands weren't tied. They stuck to their guns like the stubborn perpetual finals side that they are.

It didn't work out in the end (not really the fault of the trade) but Peter Bell walked away from trading for Jesse Hogan when Melbourne wanted two firsts. A week later they had Hogan and Lobb and still took a first to the draft. What would we have done in the same situation? I shudder to think but I'm sure it would involve a Don Pyke presser about "commitment".

We need some ruthlessness back.

Don’t often hear rumours or anything but have been told that we’re looking at bringing Willie Rioli back and have been in contact.

Think his next stop is retirement.

We can’t go down the path surely. Ryan and Rioli was fun but those days are gone.

Willie for Owies to get off that contract?

Collingwood are throwing the kitchen sink at King as RFA next year. CDT is an obvious replacement mid to long term.

Suns yet to play a final. They are about to enter the window, they aren't in the middle of it. They need 2 or 3 years finals experience to really contend.

They won't be getting opportunities every year to trade in pick 1 or 2. When the planets line up you do it or miss out. IMO.
Is CDT a forward?

This is what I'm reading on the Suns board and I tend to agree
I wouldve thought it'd be a bit of fantasy that the suns want to move heaven and earth to get CDT when he isn't a forward and they have absolutely no need for a ruck, either now or in 5 years

Is CDT a forward?

Sounds like he can be whatever he wants to be.

The talk on here originally was he's a mobile ruck unicorn, then seems that since he hasn't really done much to justify that he's been talked about as a forward a bit more. Im more than happy if we can use that talk to our advantage but I'm also going to assume that he'll be watched and scrutinised pretty closely so he'd want to show a fair bit between now and draft time. There's a few KPFs who might suit the suns needs a bit more that are highly rated too
Just a matter of draft position I guess

OK. I didn't realise you were a draft expert.

All the other "experts' must be talking out their arses then hey?

The ones getting paid as it's their jobs.

I would be careful of calling CDT a unicorn OB. He’s a player that’s having a reasonably strong 18’s season but certainly not one that would normally be associated with a top 10 pick. I think there’s a certain amount of hype around the kid that’s unjustified in terms of his current output.

The positives are he certainly has scope for upside as he has size & athleticism few prospects possess. He hasn’t played a lot of AFL footy either so maybe his upside is huge compared to other options.

He also has the potential to stale once he’s playing against grown men and be a complete flop, Barnett levels of flop especially if he doesn’t show improvement in his current game.

I guess it’s whether you want to use a high end pick on a high risk high reward type or maybe something more “bankable”.

I don’t know the answer to that but I personally don’t think he’s in the same conversation as Jackson in his draft year. The comparisons to Jackson are very kind.

Schubert is by far a superior KPP to CDT. If any club is going down the CDT route they are hoping for a Luke Jackson ceiling. Undersized but so good once the ball hits the ground it’s like having a 4th midfielder in the square. Unfortunately the floor is also low given his size.

I cannot see a situation where a club pulls the trigger on him in the top 5 without the intention of him playing as a ruck long term. If he grows another couple of centimetres expect there to be a huge market for pick 1.

Good. Had we kept rioli we would have won 3 more games. He never should have left.

Extra 300k would have won us more then 1 game

Not sure how those days are gone when ryan is still a top 5 player on our list

This is fact. Bringing rioli back will guarantee us one more win.

We got to do it. We have a chance of doubling our 2025 wins. Got to do it.
