What a legend. Thank you so much for your contribution to this club. Hope retirement is awesome for you because you definitely deserve it. Going to miss the crowd call your name.

.................

If he wasnt in the media would his career have him ahead of the vast majority of his peers from his playing days?

Yes, yes he would.
He was an absolute gun. Champion type player surrounded by not enough to get somewhere special.

Breust is a gem, and it's criminal how underrated he's been by the general football public throughout his career - and even by Hawk fans at times.
Would still have plenty to contribute off the field if he so chooses.

An absolute gun in terms of the club he played for. Not by any VFL/AFL wide metric. He was a great, not brilliant forward. There were many forwards during his career who were far better players than him.

Like who?

Really? Come on. It was an era with some of the best ever forwards.
Sorry, just re-read back through the chain of posts. Thought you were talking about Breust, not Lyon.

Ahh no problem. Breust is absolutely at the top of his era along with Betts. Breust with obviously the more successful career.

I wonder if GWS can convince him to not retire and finally join them.

Well done Luke, it's been an absolute pleasure watching you play the last 17 years. A little used term these days but I believe it describes you perfectly... an ornament to the game.

All the best for the future and hope we see you in a coaching role at the Hawks!

The guy is the goat small forward for hawthorn (this class does not include lethal or rioli, who are in categories of their own). A superstar on the field and a super human off it. Id play him as sub in the finals as our finisher. His experience and skill level are too good to ignore.

Um, watched the presser and he said he broke his back, took a while to get going and doubted himself and then did get going and is feeling good now. Hmmm, don't retire!

Punk, don't go. Don't argue.

Of the high profile three-peaters, not many are one club players. High IQ, efficient, selfless.

If I was Sammy I'd be utilising Punk as sub for the rest of the year. He's just the kind of mercurial player who can come on, snag a couple of vital goals, set up a couple more, and make a massive difference in tight games.

I wouldn't. If he's not 23rd in line to play an entire game you don't pick him.

If we are confident that he can play the entire game at a high level sure, but you need to plan expecting to lose a player in the first minute. And the starting 22 need to be fit to play a whole game too.

It's too big of a gamble to select a player with the expectation that they will be subbed off/on and have limited minutes.

Would personally prefer CJ or Hazza Mozza as the sub in the event that someone goes down early and the sub has to play four quarter - particularly if it’s a final.

Yeah I really like Hazza too, he's had a great, unassuming year. But is there some issue I'm not aware of preventing Punk from playing a full game, or close to?

Just not good enough to be dependable for four quarters. Especially finals.

Punky would probably be the first to admit it.
