Apart from JHF, the Crows list management team have been a lot better than ours over the last 5 years and those chickens are coming home to roost.

Dawson, Rankine, Neal-Bullen, Peatling and Cotton.

I think Koch’s obsession with polishing the turd hasn’t helped us as a Club understand that our recruiting and development are well off the pace.
Dawson and Rankine fell in their laps being crom supporters, the rest are… whateverrr

There are those who will disagree with you because to agree is to give the Crows some credit. We have sold the farm for a couple of highly credentialed players and we have traded too many future first and second round Draft picks. You have to get the balance between the trades and the Draft picks right and we have not quite done that. We have really burned a couple of Drafts and that will come back to haunt us.

Our list builders also have a fixation with the Mid Season Draft and seem to want to uncover hidden gems mid year.

We have done OK in our trades but I think the whole list building exercise could have been handled batter.

The discount isn't even the issue in my eyes. I don't mind a small discount.

It's the fact you can stack a bunch of picks to make up the points. ie. For a pick 1 match, you can throw a bunch of mid picks together to get the points. Yet if you were to offer the club with pick 1 those picks, they'd stop talking to you for being so absurd.

For me, it's simple. You need to give up what the pick is worth or close to. Want a pick 1 match? Ok, pony up the points, BUT one of those picks needs to be within 9 picks (half the number of teams in the comp), AND THEN you add your buffer picks to gain the points.

Pick1 match = pick 9 + pick 25 or whatever, and suddenly it's not so much of a rort.

Potentially also limit the NUMBER of points for NGA/F/S that can be bid on by each team, so you don't get the Ashcroft situation of back to back number 1 picks followed by likely NGA picks this season.
I thought about it more. Remove the discount as mentioned earlier, no deficits whatsoever meaning if a club is short of 1 point to match the bid, bad luck.

The AFL can even take it one step further and add a bidding tax e.g. 20% tax in the first round — pick 1 = 3000 points + an additional 600 points once the bidding.

That way, clubs can still stockpile picks and match a bid, but they will need to pay a hefty amount to get their F/S, NGA and Northern Academies prospects.

The points value will take another adjustment with no more discounts being applied.

I don’t think FS and academies need to be complex or removed. We want clubs to invest in producing more talent. They should be rewarded for it.

If Brisbane get lucky with 3 father sons and several excellent academy picks, well done. If the dogs seem to have talls that grow on trees well done. But pay what’s fair. And ensure that all clubs are able to invest and produce talent.

Don’t see why port should miss in Salopek or Cochrane or Pilot, just because they’re good? Should Daicos not play at Collingwood cause he is top 20 whilst the other brother can play for the pies cause he went later? Same with academy picks.

Should be able to take as many as you want but bear the draft capital. If you run out of points they go into next year.

Ie 1000 points short, well your first rounder in next year’s draft is moved back a spot. 10000 points short well each of your picks are moved back until the penalty is covered.

Means GCS can’t get all the academy talent and Noble and Rioli without giving up something.

In terms of free agents. I would remove all compo. Force clubs to match bids to force a trade or come to an agreement.

Cal Twomey's top 30 - we might squeeze in. Riley Onley looks interesting at the back end of the top 30. Cameron Nairn as a medium forward too.

I’d love Lachy Dovaston if he fell to our pick. Crafty small forward. Seems to be rated as the best small forward in the draft, so probably doesn’t quite fall to our pick.

I'm still holding out hope that we package up some later picks and get our 1R pick back from GC in some kind of post-Atkins salary dump deal...

Good luck with that. Pick 6 (which I think is our traded pure pick) is worth 1,659 points. Our current actual picks are worth 823 points.

The Atkins salary dump moved us to pick 29 from 39. They're not beholden to us.

I would be keen for Harvey Barker, Lachy Dovaston, Jevan Phillipou, Matthew LeRay, Sam Cumming; if he slid that far, Cody Curtin or Latrelle Sumner Pickett as my first choice.

Seems like Carr is specifically identifying role-players and this draft is more suited for role-players.

I am annoyed I dont know the answer to this but if Latrelle-Sumner Pickett was Port's NGA as suggested in this article then why can't we re-nominate him for this draft as an NGA? Or was it because he wasn't nominated in previous drafts and we haven't done the NGA nomination paperwork needed?

Seems a Twomey question to me

Cash it in, Addy.

God, I hope you're right.

Answered my own question.

The issue is that Latrelle nominate for the draft last year (which is why he couldn't be picked in MSD). So we wouldn't have requested NGA access. So I wonder whether it's still possibility. The question here is if we still have an opportunity to get NGA access to him if he lives within our zone.

Surely port would have (are) asking but I imagine it’s a no.

I'm still a big fan of Fred Rodriguez, even though he wasn't mentioned in Twomey's top prospects. He came into the season a top 10 prospect and has obviously slid, but Parker has selected these types before (i.e. Lorenz, Moraes).

Pick 6 for Lukosius... Geez Louise.
That’s a good shout - thought he was a NGA?

If we are looking at that medium defender - Avery Thomas would be worth a look. More athlete than footballer but might come on in an AFL environment.

Harry Scott as the ready to go, mature ager with some potential yet to come on. 190cm midfielder.

Curtain seems to have slid a long way for some reason (didn’t have the greatest champs I guess) but reckon he could still come good.

All probably available after pick 30. Sumner-Pickett also.

I think I was listening to the highlights or something and the commentator said Latrelle lived in Salisbury North with some of his Central District mates. I could be tripping but it was weird that a player for Glenelg lived so far away.

Latrelle Sumner-Pickett’s stocks are only rising especially after kicking four goals in his league debut.

I wonder if clubs will look to pounce on him early in the second round?
