carlton are about to shed a heap of cap space.

they will throw the kitchen sink at bailey i reckon. might be a tdk type situation.

They desperately need him. Thankfully Vossy is going to stink it up again and Carlton will be a basket case, ruling them out.

truthfully, i think we should be fine if we're losing starce and ah chee. neale's last big deal ends next year so presumably we use some of the cash freed up to top up washcroft and bailey and keep on rolling.

People on the carlton and port boards separately think that Bailey is locked in to joining them (this) next year. Copium is a hell of a drug.

I imagine Essendon will join the race as well.

Port, CarLOLton and Essendon. ZB will be hoping we can stump up some cash.

Selfish how? What an absurd take.

The money now is all relative to what it was back then; give me a spell that people are more aware about money now than 20 odd years.
McIvor is right in that the money is relative.

However community attitudes have change around 'work' careers and loyalty. Outside of footy for example the Boomers generally had 1 career in their life, starting at the bottom and working their way up. The Millennials and Gen Z'rs have many more and change companies regularly, "More younger workers are job hopping to find fulfilment and better work-life balance. A study by RMIT found that 30 per cent of workers under the age of 30 were considering a career change"

The concept of 'loyalty' has changed. I'm sure there are stats somewhere about the number of players changing clubs over the last 20 or 30 years, I just think we have to get used to things have changed in the way people view 'work'.

$$$$

He got his flag. That’s what you play for. While his price is hot he is cashing in for his future. Plus Adelaide are on the rise.
Any thoughts about Cal for Jordon Butts plus some pick shuffles? Looks handy, good size but semi-fringe because of their astute recruiting of key backs.

Loyalty goes both ways, and many large employers no longer offer secure employment that the boomer generation enjoyed.

Similarly, clubs are quick to delist players or offer “unders” to best 22 role players.

Sounds like a good trade. However Butts may not like the idea of being behind Payne, Gardiner and potentially Doedee.

Butts would be an upgrade on Darragh Joyce but like mpal6 I can't see a spot for him here without a couple of injuries, would he want to go from depth at the Crows to depth at the Lions.

i dont mind silvagni as a player, but if hes moving as a free agent for 800k the same year we are getting allen for reportedly 800-900k thats a serious balls up by whoever is making a play for him.

Not really if it's the Dogs. They have a specific weakness in their team which needs addressing.

Improving their backline would go a long way to playing finals next year.

Especially if there's $$$ there that won't need to be allocated to JUH moving forward.

I wonder what would happen if Starce nominates the eagles. West Coast would lose their pick 2 compo if they brought starce in as a free agent, so they would kind of have to force a trade with us? I'm not too familiar with free agency, but what kind of compo would we get if he went to Essendon? especially if its for 1million+ over 6 years. That's more that what we're giving Allen.

That's why the Eagles are going to apply to the AFL saying they should get Starc without losing Pick 2 compo instead of a priority pick. If that doesn't get approved, they'll have to trade for Starc to not lose Pick 2. We wouldn't get compo, or if we do it wouldn't be good, if Starc leaves because Allen will be joining.

If the Eagles are offering Starce anything like Essendon’s reported offer ($1.1m & 4 years) they hat in itself is enough for band-1 compensation. We’re bringing in Allen which looks like band-1 compo for WC, so in both cases the compo should be eliminated.

WC asking to be able to sign Starce without impact to their compensation for Allen would absolutely be the AFL effectively granting them pick-2 as a priority pick. It’s not being viewed that way in the media, but i hope our list management team are fighting it. Better (for us!) to grant them an end of round-1 PP and make them trade for Starce… though we may need to resign ourselves to getting nothing for Starce.

Band one compensation for Allen (if that is how it pans out) is already a handy leg up from the AFL, similar to how the Demons got band one for the Frawley trade.

I'm sure if the AFL put together an assistance package for the Eales further to this, it won't be at the detriment of one specific club.

I think best we hope for is that the AFL gives the Eagles say an end of first round priority pick that it must trade, like the AFL gave North and they use that to trade for Starcevich.

That being said, I’m not sure the AFL and 16 other clubs would be too happy with that scenario so it’s likely a no go.
So the Eagles package that end of first round pick plus their natural second round pick, and send them to Gold Coast for one of the three first round picks Gold Coast hold (theirs, Collingwood's and Port's). Then they trade the Hawks second round pick which they hold, to us for Starcevich.

This is a great idea Briztoon you should suggest it on the eagles draft and trade thread

What would we do if the Eagles big footy board came hard for Briztoon in the big footy board trade period?

What sort of offer would get it done or would we just say Briz is untradeable?

Unless he gets a 4 year deal with moderator status would not be prepared to lose him. I know not best 22 yet but have high hopes he will make it still young 😅🤣😂

The number 1 cost issue in running a business in Australia, a corporation, medium business or small business is staff - recruiting, training, retaining through salaries, superannuation, loss through absentee, sick leave etc. Business have a budget just like sporting teams, in the sports world it's called a salary cap, in the business world it's called a profit margin.
The last thing any business wants is staff turnover of their valuable employees. Yes businesses find ways to move on under performers, same with sporting teams. Businesses also offer their best employees lots of benefits to keep them but still they will be better offers from competitors. The offers always come for the best staff thats how headhunting companies make a living. competitors want the best staff to get commercial knowledge, to learn processes, to improve productivity, to strengthen management and sometimes simply to damage the competitor.

To suggest large employers actively turn over their average, better or best staff is just silly, they sure do cut the deadwood and most of all they have to stay within their operation budget which necessitates cutting the bottom workers continually. The lions would love to keep Starc and Ah Chee but they also have an operating budget called the salary cap. Footy is business, business is footy.

I watched someone talk on the Eagles proposal, kinda made sense. They are suggesting that giving the Eagles a priority pick somewhere further compromises an already compromised draft and it might just get a hearing as the AFL don't want to further stir the pot on the draft. If they get Starc without it affecting the compo pick for Oscar Allen (pick 2) then the AFL could see that as 'compensation' Never been done before, worth considering. Oh just remembered who was talking about this Callum Twomey - it was his view it might work.

I know our negotiating position is weak but…
If we lose Starce to a financial offer that blows us out of the water and we only get a pick late in the second round, I’ll be seriously annoyed!
Starce will be their best player overnight.
He’s one of the first picked in a premiership winning team.
To hand over a late second rounder would be a bloody disgrace!
End rant!
