EAGLES CHASE FRINGE HAWK

West Coast is keeping a keen interest in Hawks pressure forward Sam Butler as Henry Hustwaite’s frustration builds in his lack of senior opportunities.

Butler has returned from a badly broken leg to play four senior games this year as he kicked a huge goal after a key tackle against Greater Western Sydney.

But while he came into the side to help stop the Orange Tsunami with his pressure skills he has racked it up at VFL level with a 42-possession game and most recently 34 possessions and 10 clearances against Southport.

West Coast are likely to lose first-round pick Campbell Chesser to Carlton, so Butler would appeal as a mid-forward or just a genuine mid.

Hustwaite is contracted for 2026 but keen to find a new home where he can play AFL footy, subbed off early by the Hawks in the last two of his four total games this year.

Despite speculation Carlton is not interested so he will need to keep looking.

In the VFL final just gone he had 37 possessions, 11 clearances and five centre clearances and he has worked hard on his spread from contest to be a more versatile player.

AGONISING CHOICE LOOMS OVER LION

Brisbane’s Brandon Starcevich faces a Chad Warner-style decision to play for two more years chasing flags at the Lions or return home to play with the Eagles on a long-term deal.

Starcevich would ideally like to return home to play in WA at some stage in his career given his close family ties.

Like Warner he would give up that chance for silverware if he left for rebuilding West Coast.

So having decided that third suitor Essendon is not in the race he faces an extremely challenging decision.

He would sign a long-term deal at West Coast but likely only a two-year deal as a restricted free agent.

If he did find his way to West Coast the most likely outcome would be through a trade, not free agency.

West Coast will secure the No. 2 overall draft pick as free agency compensation when Allen leaves, but under the net gain rule it would be diluted if they secured a free agent.

They have asked the AFL under their priority pick submission if they could bring another free agent in without diluting that compo but no one believes that is likely to fly.

So handing up a later pick for Starcevich to make his move a trade keeps the No. 2 overall pick.

Brisbane would get a pick rather than nothing, because having secured Sam Draper and Oscar Allen they would get nothing for the departing Starcevich anyway.

thanks again, seems WC are chatting to everyone behind the scenes again, hope we land 4 targets through trade

What about Busslinger though

I'm not sure about Sam Butler - his Premeriship winning experience would help but 2006 is a long time ago and now he is almost as old as Liam Ryan.

Butler. Don't mind it.

POSITION:
Medium Forward/Midfielder

SNAPSHOT: "A clean and clever utility who can play through the midfield or up forward, Butler is damaging around goals with some elite acceleration, and the defensive traits to match his offensive output."

Sam Butler is a midfielder/forward out of the Greater Western Victoria (GWV) Rebels and the brother of St Kilda forward, Dan. The crafty talent is really impressive both ways, able to win the ball offensively, and also defensively, to be the complete package from that sense. Gifted with blistering acceleration, the areas of improvement include backing himself to take the game on more - not just giving off the quick handball - and gaining greater consistency by foot going forward.

STRENGTHS:

  • Clean hands
  • Acceleration
  • Forward craft
  • Defensive work
  • Athleticism

IMPROVEMENTS:

  • Kicking consistency
  • Decision making

Butler is an eye-catching player, with some of the quickest wheels going around. Early in the season, the 184cm talent was stationed forward, and able to not only hit the scoreboard, but set up his teammates with his dash and creativity inside 50. He then moved into a part-time midfield role to match his forward time, and began to win the ball through the middle while still hitting the scoreboard. As a full-time midfielder, Butler was able to adapt to the stoppages and win the ball in close and get it out through clearances, though his field kicking consistency let him down at times.

In many ways, Butler is a catch 22, because he often puts more pressure on himself then he needs considering his ability to burst away from opponents. If he took the extra few steps, he would be able to compose himself and make a better decision, but in saying that, his lightning quick hands allow him to release teammates in close. His hands are as clean as anyone's, and his ability to win the ball, dish it off and then go for the receive is fantastic. That, coupled with the fact he does the hard, defensive running as well, means he has an all-round game.

Once Butler backs himself more through confidence, he will be able to steady more and use the ball in more impactful ways going forward. He can hit the scoreboard, he can burst away, and he can tackle. As a forward - which is where he will start at AFL level - Butler has the mix of defensive and offensive traits that will keep a coach happy. As a midfielder, his hands in close allow his teammates to be better, and his speed from the stoppage provides him with a weapon very few have. If he really harnesses that and irons out his kicking - likely through composure more so than execution - then watch out.

If Neale does leave, looks like it will be to Freo unfortunately.

Apologies gang.

Spitballing on what I wouldn’t mind us doing this trade/draft based on a healthy dose of wishful thinking

Assuming the AFL take pity on us and agree to our assistance package meaning-
• 2x additional Cat B spots with the ability to prelist our NGA players
• 2x additional rookie list spots
• An end of R1 priority pick
• An additional 2026 R2 priority pick tied to our finishing position that must be traded for an established player
• Our request to not dilute any FA compensation if we add a FA to be denied

Trade out -
• Allen in return for pick 2 as FA compensation
• Ryan and our F4 pick for St Kilda’s F2 and F3 picks
• Chesser and the St Kilda F3 pick for Carlton’s F2 pick (might need to be our F3 pick though)

Delist - Barnett

Trade in -
• Neale and Starcevich for the Hawthorn R2 and R3 picks we hold
• McVee and Melbourne’s F3 pick for the priority F2 pick that must be traded (alternatively Ah Chee and Brisbane’s F3 pick)

Pick swaps -
• Trade pick 1 and our F2 to Essendon for pick 5 and their F1
• Trade our end of R1 priority pick and our R2 pick to the loser of Gold Coast v Brisbane for their R1 pick

Go to the draft with picks 2,5,15,16 and our R4 pick (assuming Crows beat Hawks)

Draft -
• Pick 2 - Cumming
• Pick 5 - Sharp (assumes Richmond overlook him with their two picks)
• Picks 15 and 16 - Best available
• R4 pick - Banfield (F/S)
• Evans and Williams added to Cat B list

Would leave us with the two additional rookie spots to fill which would be a choice between any two of the following:
• Rookie listing Barnett
• Adding Walley as a Cat B and moving Livingstone to the rookie list or delisting him
• Using the first pick in the rookie draft on a slider or mature aged state league player
• Adding a DFA post draft or leave a spot open to look at a train on option to be added as a SSP

My preference would be to add Walley, keep only one of Barnett/Livingstone and keep a train on spot open - Robertson, Tunstill, Blight, Murdoch, Parfitt, Winder would be some of the options I’d look at

In - Neale, Starcevich, McVee (or Ah Chee), Cumming, Sharp, Pick 15(TBA), Pick 16(TBA), Banfield, Evans, Williams, Walley, SSP(TBA)

We would also hold the following 2026 draft picks:
• 2x R1 - Ours and Essendon’s
• 2x R2 - St Kilda’s and Carlton’s
• 2x R3 - Ours and Melbourne’s

Which gives us four teams to deathride

Yes, I was bored
So am I now!

With us missing out on the young big bodied mids in Erasmus and likely Davies, I would’ve liked to at least land a fringe mature accumulator like Brodie (linked to Port) or Fiorini (linked to VIC). Both are FA (or cheap trades) could play every week and get first hands on the footy for our young mids. Flanders would be even better but cost more and more suitors to compete with.

Been trying to catch up on this Robey fella after seeing him mentioned on here a few times. Sounds like a genuine bolter that could spice up this draft after moving from the forward line to midfield and dominating in CTL. We could use another powerful mid to rotate forward with Reid/Hewett. Would be a good balance if we also took Sharp as the no-nonsense inside mid.

A couple of articles referring to Robey below for those interested. Second one mentions StK NGA Kye Fincher as another riser. If he attracts more attention then maybe the Saints will need to retain some picks to match and be forced to trade a player or two given their huge shopping list including Ryan.

Yes, don't mind it at all.
Basically what would replace Owies and Long while NGA players in the FWD half grow and develop over the next few years.
Wouldn't be much in a trade, OOC Hawks 3RD round pick back to them!

we managed to transition pretty effectively from the top tier to the bottom tier. with the exception of geelong all teams have their time at the bottom
We certainly did, sank like a stone and have disappeared.
NM have been bad for a decade, future looks bleak for Essendon. Richmond look like they will be down the bottom for a long time, future not all that rosy for Carlton. SK stuck in mediocrity.

On the other side the academy concessions for the northern states are ensuring these teams will always be in the top tier, Geelong and Collingwood are always there.

Brodie headed to Port and Reidy to Carlton. Both were under our nose and would’ve been handy
Dont care about Brodie, Port can have him.
Reidy not too fussed about, hasnt shown that much in his limited opportunity at AFL level to whinge too much about it. Hes not better than Flynn or BW right now, so all g. Focus on Archer as a ruck

All this talk of Neale...

Reminds of Failmantle when they were down the bottom. Threads full of trades and destination club and all that.

No one came.

So get a grip, you're all living in fantasy land.

Probably true but it beats reality

Neale is not going to happen, to us or Freo.

2 years down track if Brissy don’t need him and we are on the up, maybe re-visit. But still unlikely.

I’m almost certain eagles don’t take sharp if they hold 1 and 2. First reason is I think his ceiling is too low to warrant taking him with a top 5 pick. The second reason is I don’t think he fits the game style mini wants to play, McQualter is trying to build a game style similar to GWS. This requires speed, damage by foot and outside run. Obviously GWS have tom green as there big bodied mid, but I see Sharps ceiling as worpel

Wonder if there's the possibility of a three way trade. Butler, HH, Carlton first to us, pick 1 or 2 to essendon, merrett to hawks.

How's the value on that? Not familiar enough with the hawks players to be sure on it.
Not to be rude, but would we really trade PICK 1 for two VFL players and Carlton's future first?
Both Sam and Harry played 4 senior games each this year.

I would ironically jump in the Swan river with a cinderblock

Didn't Sam Butler have a lot of interruptions to the start of his career because of injury.
Isn't he now finally finding some fitness and form and getting a run in the first team.
Why would he want to leave a team that stuck with him through all his injury plagued seasons now that he is fit and playing.
Just doesn't make sense.
Glad we don't have any player(s) that would do that to us................

Gettable update (for non listeners a fair bit of Eagles related stuff late)

Gave the Hawks fans a back hander saying they wouldn’t offer that deal to Harley. Was 100% offered.

Walter has had a deal on the table from the Suns for a while. Cal believes that will be upped and he will sign.

Flanders likely to explore his options. Victoria mentioned.

Robey possible top 10 pick now. Was well and truely on some clubs radar but now on everyone’s.

Fiorini has interest from clubs (Port and Essendon mentioned)

Teams ain’t expected to take many picks at the draft.

Ryan valued at between F2-F3. 🫣

Cheeser valued at Blues 34 pick this year. (Hard one to value)

Davies expected to stay now. Did look around but no club said come here and we will give you a long term deal.

Cal Ah Chee likely at the Crows next year. (Eagles not even mentioned)

Eagles pick 1&2 Duursma and CDT (if we get it) separated themselves. If they only get pick 1 he doesn’t know who we would take. Compared CDT to Thilthorpe development a little as a forward in u18s.

Eagles draft package assistance. Unlikely get the free hit at Starcevich but will use their end of first round pick that has to be traded if we get it. Likely will get something. Starcevich decision still unknown though.

Future access to FS and NGA still in discussions.
Why the hell would we give a end of first rounder for starcivich. Brisbane have obtained 2 high end free agents and now get an end of first for starcivich?
