If Hawthorn can pry Merrett out of Essendon, does that mean they come even harder for Bailey? If so, what is he really what is Bailey really worth in terms of picks?
You’d be chasing two firsts if he is contract. Maybe send a second round pick back their way

Why would we trade him this year and why would he want to go there? Much better teams will offer him similar $

How do we even know Bailey is remotely interested in leaving ?

At last got his body right , just won an AA, an opportunity to be a pivotal player for the Lions over the next few years.

We'll look after him well enough if we think he's worth it. It's not always about the money.

I feel he'll do a Rayner and sign this off-season. Seems to be a no non-sense type, that's why clubs are rushing to make indicative bids to say "please don't re-sign too early !!"

Half our team could be on significantly more money elsewhere, but they're still on extremely good money (compared to the rest of us) & clearly love where they work.

There's only so many ivory back scratchers you can buy.......

The ‘Lachie Neale wants to go back to WA’ thing has now gone to 10 news perth. What is this.

A collective delusion of sandgropers?

Our Academy is probably the most important thing about this club. Likewise, we should be a team that is full of queenslanders. That was the purpose of it, and having the lions being a team that is truly queenslander would help the growth of this game even more in Brisbane and all across QLD. The club should be fighting hard for this, because i don't want the best QLD talents to be playing in Melbourne.
Some of us that were Fitzroy members 35 years ago like a Melbourne connection in the team thanks.

No one is saying we can't have victorians playing for us, but growing up here you have to understand the perception the lions had. People used to look at the lions as a club that was full of victorians and that the club wasn't truly Queenslander. Queenslanders have a huge amount of passion for their state, which is why origin is so huge here. It's absolutely pivotal that a large majority of our players come from QLD, because the more locals we have playing for the lions, the more embrace we will get from QLD'rs. That's just the reality of it. It will also help eradicate any go home factor in the future if our performances start to dip.

That’s a shame about Ripley, but what about Ridley?
Think he's busy dealing with Xenomorphs

It's also important for the side - getting a core who aren't at risk of GH5ing when we're struggling.

Fitzroy is a part of who we are as a club and should be - but the playing group at the end of the day needs to be people who actively enjoy living in (and have support networks in) Qld.

Think the lions were embraced and passionate in the early 2000’s, how many Queenslanders did we have then? Voss, Aker and Charman? Victorians are also passionate about sport and have a look at the Storm, one or two Victorians and still massive support. If performances dip players leave (look at Essendon), won’t matter where they are from. I would say the team is well
supported now and not majority Queenslanders. To want a team full
of QLD’s gives no thought to us Melb supporters who have been following the Lions a lot longer than most.

If Neale wanted to go back to WA at the end of this season, can anyone see the club playing hardball on what the pick is?

Not really over the pick but over letting him go in the first place.

Think it is a million times more likely that he goes as a FA.

Still got another couple of years before he's eligible for that at least.

Maybe not hardball but I don’t think they’ll be happy for him to go for nothing. If we’re losing both he and Starc the club will want to make sure they get enough assets for Ridley as well as points for Annable I’d think

Pretty confident Lachie is a FA next year when he comes out of contract due to total service time???
Can't find any reference to that in this year's AFL rules - it's still all based of service time at a given club, and still a minimum of eight years.

17.1 Free Agents
(a) Unless a Player is a Restricted Free Agent, a Player who:
(i) is party to a Contract of Service with a Club that expires on or prior to 31 October in a particular year (relevant year); and
(ii) prior to or upon the expiration of the Contract of Service referred to in Rule 17.1(a)(i), has been on that Club’s Primary and/or Rookie List for eight or more consecutive AFL Seasons,
will be a Free Agent in and from the relevant year.
(b) A Player who:
(i) is on the Primary List of a Club; and
(ii) subject to Rule 17.1(d), is removed from the Primary List by that Club on or before the final list lodgement date (being date of the second List lodgement as notified by the AFL) in a particular year (relevant year);
will be a Free Agent in and from the relevant year.
(c) A Player who:
(i) is on the Rookie List of a Club; and
(ii) is removed from the Rookie List by that Club in a particular year (relevant year),
will be a Free Agent in the relevant year.
(d) A third or fourth year Rookie Player who has played less than ten (10) Senior Matches as at the conclusion of their third or fourth season (as applicable) and receives an offer from their Current Club to be retained as a fourth or fifth year Rookie Player but does not accept that offer will be a Free Agent in the relevant year.
(e) A Player who elects to retire or has lodged a ‘Player Request for Removal from a List’ form in the form prescribed in Schedule 1 as Form 40, will not be a Free Agent under Rule 17.1(b) in the relevant year.

God its all so bush league. Ridiculous that Lachie wouldn't qualify.

In any event I don't think we'd stand in his way if he wanted to leave when out of contract next year. This year I think we'd be pretty inclined to say no.

First year for us was 2019 ? Seeing out next year would be his 8th season with us.

Couldn’t begrudge him moving, been an absolute champion player for us and a major factor in the club turning things around. However, Id still be disappointed if he left, think he’s still got plenty to offer next year (with a decent preseason hopefully)
Surprised so many supporter are reasonably neutral on the prospect of losing him this year.

Was about to post the same. Next year will be Neale's 8th season with us.
