Hopefully we can pivot to another mature mid, Steele makes sense given the Saints have got Ryan incoming.

It may have been a throwaway comment, but Harley did say "he liked what we have planned" during his brief BnF speech.

Whether that was just in general to the list build or are we into another Mid target to offer support..

Very close with Duursma, I haven’t been big on Greeves for most of the year but he’s winning over lately, kickings still pretty rough but everything else is coming along.

And yep, I think Greeves potentially being available a bit later on makes it even more unlikely we take Sharp.
4 Goals for Greeves today in the CTL.

I think what the Hawks rise shows us, along with the Cats always being up there, is that its not always about loading up on high picks thats the be all and end all.

Kills me to say to say it but both clubs are extremely well run and very well coached, and hardly reliant on high picks. Game plan and tactics still very important, talent alone doesn't get you anywhere.

Getting the off field right in terms of standards and development far more important than draft numbers
A lot easier to build this way when you’re parked in Victoria for 3/4 of the season. Those lists wouldn’t cope with a WA fixture

Other than incoming players I’m wondering how Bo Allan will turn out. He’s become like the forgotten man other than brief mentions here and there.
I like the look of him; big, fast, tough and looks to have a raking kick tho his disposal has been questioned.
Throw him in with HEd Hough Ginbey Macarthy and Grego and looks real good.
The Pick alone makes him very important to us.
People that watched him in WAFL what’s the verdict!
Brockman is the other.
He’s got everything except consistency. Is he just gunna be one of those “if onlys” or can Mini bring out the best in him for longer coz make no mistake this kid has got the goods.

still have him becoming a mid, he's not just a straight line runner like ginbey. Once he puts on some size and gains midfield craft he can become our big body / transition mid of the future.

Bo was very poorly managed this season. The games I watched him at WAFL level he did standout when he was around the ball. Athletic and goes hard but faded in and out of games.

Kicking and decision making need work if he is going to play that attacking hbf role at afl level.

My own feeling on Bo Allen is that he's on the vanilla side of technical skill and smarts but strong as an ox, fast and agile with a long kick even if he isn't the most creative or accurate. Has been used like shit this year, arguably the worst of any player on the list. A genuine blotch on the McQualter report card.

There is a player there. As time goes on and with Chesser departing I accept we need a genuine outsider with class (IE Duursma) to go with another gun insider.
Ginbey and Allan have the brawn but neither are A+ mids or ever will be.

Because he was given an intermittent run I have no idea based on demonstrated ability whether he'll make the grade. I'm confident, but that's inspite of McQualter.

Essendon really are stepping on their own dick. Merrett badly wants to go. And they may be really pissed at him and want to get rid of him. But allowing people (including the coach) to go out in the media and bag or attack him and more or less say he won't be allowed back because his team mates are disgusted with him is just dumb. They are boxing themselves in. They are allowing whoever they end negotiating with him to trade him to that they do not have the option of walking away and retaining him. They will just have to take whatever is offered within reason even if it is only 50% of what he is worth. There is a time for keeping your mouth shut.

I had the same thought. Classic Essendon. The ghost of Adrian Dodoro still haunts the Hangar.

They want to feel like the smartest kid in the room when, to my eyes, they're only weakening their own position.

If Brockman is eventually among our worst 6, we'll be alright.

Was told today the playing group aren't a fan of the coach. There's an impending exodus.

Everyone could see how Newcombe ripped that game apart and has been one of the best finals players over the last 2 years.

For those who match the Hawks closely and also the u18s how does Sharp and Newcombe compare?

Newcombe more an attacking hard nut rather then the defence midfielder that some think Sharp will be in the afl. What would Newcombe have over Sharp? Speed seem similar, both hands are clean, both hard nuts, Newcombes kicking while not elite is probably above average?
For a hard nut newcombe sure flops about for frees

You’ll have a hard time convincing me that Hawthorn/Mitchell haven’t deliberately leaked the meeting to the media

Just like they did with Allen earlier this year

It’s rare these type of meetings become public knowledge and the common denominator in both Allen and Merrett was they met with Hawthorn. The fallout of the meetings becoming public knowledge has been brutal for West Coast and Essendon respectively

Meanwhile, Mitchell and by extension Hawthorn come out essentially unscathed with some media lauding him for his genius/ruthlessness

They’ve known what the impact would be and have purposely leaked the information to destabilise rival clubs

We also need a guy like that in the middle just as badly.
I wouldn't say as badly, seeing as the ball spends so much time in our backline and a lot of our scoring opportunities start from there. You want McCarthy (or someone similar) acting almost as a quarterback in the backline with his vision and ability to hit up players coming out of defense.
He's far more important in the backline imo, would say he only got midfield minutes at the end of the season because we were so light on there, I wouldn't think he plays there much next season.
Ideally we draft an inside mid, a more balanced mid and an outside mid this draft and then trade in a couple of more senior guys. I don't see a spot for McCarthy in the middle assuming the list management guys do their job properly.

What I heard (from the Allen camp) was that Oscar self reported the meeting and the club responded by leaking it. It was Lachy Reid who first put it out there

I watched most Beagles games this season and bo was underwhelming.

To me he looks like a yeo type defender but way worse kicking .

They tried him as a mid in the u18s and much like ginbey he is a brute of a kick with his physicality but just cant find the ball enough and always trailing his opponent.

Brockman hasn't evolved at all since coming from hawks still putting up the same numbers . Saying that his numbers should increase if we had an actual functioning midfield and a ruck to feed that midfield.

I have seen brockman play some good cameos at the centre bounces at wafl level . Very bolten-esque running forward of stoppage .

to be fair to Bo hes had a horror run with illness and injury this year, im keen to hold off any judgment until i see him get a good run at it

Imo we need him in the middle more badly, a guy like him in the midfield makes opposition teams - particularly their backlines play differently.
They have to play more defensive/reactive rather than expecting us to just bomb it in.
McCarthy can be far more damaging in the middle.
Hes what Kelly was meant to be a few years ago alongside Shuey/Yeo/Redden, but better.

Disagree, I think he was only starting in defence because it was more simple, just defend your man and then attack when you can.
I think we wanted him in the midfield, just didnt want to rush him into it.

I dont see a midfield for us without McCarthy next year.

Its Reid, Hewett and McCarthy with Graham and whichever kids or other players we bring in for mine
