Link to the Ryan Daniels article referenced earlier where he suggests using our R2 pick to trade for Starcevich

That’s after saying we fumbled the chase for Erasmus by not going hard enough with a strong offer and that we could have got him for free without explaining how

Using a pick that high for Starcevich is stupid. He’s a FA that if he were to leave Brisbane would get them zero compensation because of their expected signings of Allen and Draper under free agency.

Starcevich is a restricted FA meaning Brisbane can match any offer to force a trade and we won’t be attempting to sign him as a FA anyway since we’d dilute the Allen compensation. So we need to offer Brisbane something and for them, anything is going to be better than nothing

Offer the Hawthorn R3 pick we hold but be prepared to use the R2 pick we hold which will likely be nudging pick 40 come draft night

Our R2 pick is far too valuable to be used on Starcevich. It’s a stupid suggestion from Daniels who spent an entire article saying we need to be more ruthless

And on a final note, whilst I want us to bring him in, he isn’t a midfielder and his value should be based on him as a defender. If we trial him through the midfield if/when he joins and it works out that’d be a bonus but it shouldn’t form part of our calculations when making him an offer
Bring Starcevich in and drop Cole to captain the Beagles.

Starcevich hasn't played as a midfielder since U18's briefly in 2017 and even that came late (similar to Ginbey), where he was never a natural ball winner.

He never played it in WAFL colts.

If he thinks he's going to join West Coast and play midfield in the AFL after averaging 10 disposals a game this year, with a career high average of 15 he's in for a reality check.

Would prefer we went after an actual midfielder like Steele with that pick. Lockdown defender isn't high on my priority list with Greggo and Hough tbh.

And neither is a midfielder .

So what do we do for mids ?
Duursma could be and should be a midfielder at some point, it doesn't have to be immediate.

Here's a question, when was the last time had a genuine chrome dome bald player in our midst?
Daniel Kerr, Sheed and 2007 Judd were both balding short cropped, not chromedomers.

2002 Peter Matera is my first thought. Struggling to find anyone more chronologically relevant.

For the bald factor alone I'm okay with getting him in.

Starcevich is a quality player from an elite team. If he decides to come we are likely to be able to use a pick the AFL gives us to get him (so for free) and still get pick 2 for Oscar.

Thats a win any way I look at it
I don't see the AFL giving us a pick for Starcevich. Brisbane stand to gain from priority access to an academy player and are picking up two top end free agents because of the salary cap space saved from all their academy/father-son selections over the past few years.

As Keys said, Hawks' R3 is plenty for a player Brisbane wouldn't receive anything for if they joined any other club.

Thank ****. Another player that can’t be included in a shit sandwich for one of our top picks.

ohnowhatashame

Actual photo of us.

Money Crying GIF

Starcevich played on Ben Long who kicked 45 goals this season and was a major driver of the Suns success

Kept him to 0.1 from just 4 disposals.

Murdered him

We need as many quality experienced players as we can get and he likely comes cheap

No brainer if we can convince him to come across
this

I think people will be looking silly with Bo

Yes, his first year as been less than ideal. But he's fast, strong and moves very well in traffic. He's a inside mid if you ask me
All WC fans wanna see Allan succeed, but it's easy to see Murphy Reid as the better player on evidence of his impressive season and Allan quiet all year.

The issue is competitiveness, right?
We get the North Melbourne treatment of two years ago we get an EO1st that we almost definitely have to trade, it will dimish that pick's perceived value.

We're making a genuine attempt to get class players in to be more competitive. I suspect the AFL will provide some levers to enable that.

Without an AFL gift wrap we have to pay a genuine second rounder. The AFL won't grant our request for a freebie on him to not dilute OA's pick 2.

There was also the overwhelming evidence of their U18 year. Everyone wants to see Allan become the better player and he does have a higher ceiling but it’s a long, long way off.

His illness/injury and along with Gross how he’s been used hasn’t helped him at all. Very poor by MCQ and committee.

North Melbourne's first assistance package involved a future second, a future third and two extra list spots. If we are to get picks, I expect it to be along similar lines. As much as the AFL need to help us, I'd be pretty pissed off if I were any other clubs seeing Brisbane get MORE help.

Lol at thinking we’re in a position where we should pick and choose areas of recruiting solid players. We simply just don’t have enough so for that reason alone we’d be stupid to say no. Agree with him not being a midfielder, but he’s as good a backman than you can get. He also frees up Tmac to play more offensively/midfield and allows us to develop Bo/Grego in other positions which they are probably better suited to. Lockdown defenders they are not.

As for Steele, we could pretty easily secure him in the Ryan trade + some 🍴if they feel that’s not even on value alone.

Totally agree with your comments.
Hawks 2nd could be middle ground to get a deal done.
I think there is much more at play here with BRI, they are most likely to trade Starcevich, Ah Chee and I can see a scenario that WC offer is overs for Starcevich and unders for Ah Chee as a deal.
Hawks 2nd and WC compo pick 19 or Hawks 2nd and Ryan trade pick 25 to Brisbane with something coming back next year.

West Coast fans who think we’re too good to accommodate a good player anywhere on the ground, including the midfield, could be in for a reality check.

There are 5 factors needed for us moving forward.

1. You can't have enough mids. Even if they're developing in a different position or playing WAFL. Davies, Phillips, Dev, Neale, Sharp cumming farrow grjl

2. You need speed and run. Duursma, Banfield, grjl, evans

3 shoring up our defence. Starc, mcvee. Mids with potential. Hough goes down back (cracked open in emergency only). As for key defenders/forward sheubert. Busslinger, zakostelski.

4. Forward half pressure. Our group of NGAs will bolster this and place pressure on existing ones. Ah Chee?

5 a ruck. This will have to wait unless we're into someone like Reeves or knoble.

Essential we get some players in return for losing Allen Ryan and Chesser and those three clubs need to come to the party. With luck the AFL grant us prelisting and extra rookies spots and a couple of picks which will bolster our draft hand to sweeten deals ensure 3 top 10 picks.

I am bullish that this will be a positive off season for us.
100% agree

What compensation do Brisbane receive for starcivich? Allen and draiper for free.

Late pick or pick upgrade is a bonus.

If Brisbane were willing to offer starcivich the contract we are offering he would be staying no doubt

Starcevich is younger and probably a better pick up then Oscar ....just saying Oscar has huge potential but thats what you are trading for at Brisbane.
L Neale will stay at Brisbane, looking forward to getting started in his off season training , sounds like he is staying there.

The more I ponder it, the more comfortable I am with P1 Duursma, and P2 Sharp. Sharp is the inside bull, 200-gamer as advertised. Duursma the high-ceiling, could-be-anything type transition mid.

A starting midfield of Reid, Duursma, Sharp, Hewett is well balanced and would be an opposition nightmare in 4 or 5 years.

Address the ruck issue with a mature-age pickup/late draft/cheap trade ALA Xerri, Grundy, Witts, Meek...

Reality is that we are unlikely to attract a player of the quality to justify parting with an early pick

Our R1 picks, including an end of R1 pick if we’re lucky enough to get it from the AFL, our R2 pick and all of our future picks should be off limits in a player trade

Unless there’s a surprise target, our trade capital should be limited to:
• Hawthorn R2 and R3 picks which at best will now be 33 and 51 before shenanigans
• The priority pick to be traded we’ve asked for which is still TBA both in terms of whether we get one and where it lands
• Whatever we receive for Ryan from St Kilda
• Whatever we receive for Chesser from Carlton

At the moment, Starcevich is the only player I have any confidence we can land, and even then I think it’s 50/50 he stays at Brisbane

Ah Chee is a maybe but he’s linked more to Adelaide if he moves than us

Sam Butler looks a decent target but him playing a PF, and possibly a GF, with a contract offer to stay at Hawthorn on the table means he’s less likely than he might have been a month ago

Tylar Young from Richmond is someone we’ve been linked to that might be a possibility but he’s has other suitors in his home state of Victoria

McVee, if he moves is probably Fremantle or even another Vic club

Would love Steele in a Ryan trade but there’s been no reports that’s even being considered so put that in the BF dream basket along with Neale

From there, we’re probably looking for scraps in the delist/free to a good home pile with the likes of Robertson, Tunstill, Blight and maybe someone like Phillips from North. Or adding mature aged state league players if we are granted extra rookie list spots

Players like Davies, Fiorini, Flanders are going to stay or have more enticing clubs chasing them

The club is clearly working behind the scenes to identify players to improve our list but we’re a difficult sell right now

Not a draft watcher, but from what I hear, this is my thinking too. If the Eagles think they can trade pick 2 and still get Duursma, Sharp and a third top 10 pick, I’m all for it.

There was also the overwhelming evidence of their U18 year. Everyone wants to see Allan become the better player and he does have a higher ceiling but it’s a long, long way off.

His illness/injury and along with Gross how he’s been used hasn’t helped him at all. Very poor by MCQ and committee.

IMo there was only one thing done poorly and that was the game Bo was sub and wasnt used.

What else was done poorly with these two?

Both got a taste of AFL action in season 1. Both earned contract extensions.

Mini's management of the draftees was probably one of the most disappointing aspects of his coaching. Its a worry as we have such a developing list - hopefully he corrects it next year.

Brisbane have a massive points issue, and they will push for our 15-25 range picks to solve that, but it’s not our problem. Fairly certain we’d happily take Duursma + Annabel if available to us, not sure why we are actively trying to help them solve the issue
Brisbane will lose ahchee to Adelaide if the rumours are to be believed.

With Adelaide's early exit their first (15) seems overs and Adelaide will have some nice local boys in that range like barker who they could sit on for a year with his ACL .

Adelaide have been very staunch with their trades in recent years with Dawson rankin peatling all done for unders so I doubt Brisbane get good value for ahchee
