Petracca deal could get done relatively easily.

Something like:
  • Petracca for a F1, but Melbourne pay $600k p.a for next 4 years; or
  • Petracca for 2 X 2nd rounders, but Melbourne pay $200k p.a. for next 4 years

While I think we would have the cap space, I don't think we can afford (from a future list planning POV) to take on Petracca's full contract ($1.3-$1.4m/year for 4 years) unless he is willing to spread it over an extra year (e.g. if he is due $5.2m/4 years (average $1.3m), we would need to give him a bit extra ($5.5/5 years (average $1.1m).

Perfect (realistic) scenario would be for us to end up paying less than $900k p.a (Dees pay $400k-$500k p.a.). without giving up a first rounder, which likely means, the deal would be something like:

- Petracca for 2 x 2nd rounders + an ok young player (De Mattea/Parker/Allan).
I wouldn't be comfortable paying a 30yo over a mill for 5 years.
If Trac is interested in life after football (which was put forward with his "Brand Petracca", then maybe if he has interest in coming to Collingwood (and the army that follows it), he considers tearing up his contract and renegotiating.
Thats if he really wants out of Melbourne and we are his destination of choice.

Highly doubt Collingwood gets mentioned in a potential trade for Trac. But if something comes out that we would be his preference, you can guarantee it’s because him and his management know a deal could get done.

Again highly doubt any of this happens but I personally wouldn’t say no to it. Nice to talk about though.

As much as I think Trac would add to our midfield I’m not sure I would want to give up our future first for him.

I think I’d rather have our future first available draft night and have the option to trade into the first round and get a good quality midfielder that we like before a bid on McCarthy.

Its a difficult one.
  • The salary cap has from from $12.5m in 2021 (when Petracca signed his contract) to over $18m in 2026, and it is expected to grow to $21m by 2030.
  • Therefore, while $1m/year does sound like a lot, its probably the new $700k when you consider the salary cap has increased by 50% in 5 years, and will look even cheaper by 2030.
  • I'm not wedded to the idea of getting Petracca, but think it would be a good deal for the club on the right terms, considering 1) We need a 2nd mid to support Nick 2) We don't have a lot of trade currency; and 3) We will have a host of retirements over the next 2-3 years.

Don't think this is the draft to be trading a future 1st to get into, especially considering:
  • Its widely considered a weak draft
  • Its highly diluted by academy/father son picks
  • Next years draft is considered stronger and new afl rules means it will be much less compromised.
In saying that, I do like the idea of getting a "best available" pick in ahead of a McCarthy bid (who is rated around 25 to 30), but I think we could achieve this by packaging a future 2nd (in a stronger draft) + this years second for Pick 20 to 25 this year.

I'm only knocking back going after Trac if it's because Butters is coming next year.

Brand Petracca can take a pay cut if he wants to come to Brand Collingwood.

Butters is pretty much locked and loaded to go to Geelong. Know someone close to the family.

They're going to have to pay the full whack. Port will match next year and won't be that interested in the Cats draft picks.

Rumours of Carlolton trying this year which is why the Curnow rumours haven't died down.
Bloos saying no publicly to Curnow move, but if they can turn the Curnow trade assets into enough for Butters they will change their minds.

Situation may have changed, but from what I have been told by someone close (only a few weeks ago) both the dogs and cats have lucrative long-term contracts on close to $1.9-$2m/season, and out of those 2 teams, his preference is the Cats.

As of yet, Collingwood haven't made a serious approach for him (although he does like the idea of the pies as a team).

I have no knowledge of the Carlton situation, although you may be right (that Carlton are after him) but doubt he would go there unless the offer is too good to refuse.

If they could pull that off, add Reidy, get Smith and Newman up and going and have a good year on the injury front I unfortunately think they could be relevant again… They just need a small forward or two to kick on.
