SOO will be about as entertaining as the legends match, everyone going half pace etc because it means nothing... now if the location of the grand final was decided in it....
Gee, that's be interesting.

You'd have a bunch of players on a team trying desperately to win, whilst others on the same team would be trying to lose.

Then there's the ones from bottom teams who are just there for a laugh and a paycheck.

Pretty much normal SOO really.

I don't really care to be honest, I'm looking forward to WA playing for the first time since 1999. Even if we lose by 10 goals. Guys like Paddy Cripps would love to play for WA at least once at AFL level before they retire.
10 goals is generous tbh.

If anything it might cause the AFL to examine their complete failure to sustain and develop WA pathways. They've withdrawn funding and fobbed it off with the result being a dearth of WA talent, a lost decade.
Victoria has ~2.5 x the population of WA but their 8th choice midfield would probably still annihilate our 1st choice midfield.

As Freo has shown, it's at the stage where you are best off avoiding WA midfielders, as they have consistently demonstrated to be generally worse than Victorian midfielders.

I don't know anything about junior footy development, but I often wonder whether this is because midfielders require more junior development funding and infrastructure than KPP. So while WA usually punches above its weight when it comes to talls and rucks, I wonder if this is purely because of the genetics of these kids make them good KPPs - and the development infrastructure is not as relevant. Similar situation to smaller players who rely on footspeed or freakish athletic ability. Whereas our inability to develop midfielders is due to poor development.

It doesn't make sense that Victoria (not to mention the northern academies) is a conveyor belt of midfielders, whereas WA has Warner and that's it.

Said it before but

WA
SA
Vic Country
Vic Metro

Keep it the same teams as the under-16's and Under 18's

Even number of teams, more chances for Vic players to pull on the big V and you can just rotate through the match-ups every year.

You can then do a City Vs Country match for Victoria every 3 years as well as a local derby

Frustrated Clint Eastwood GIF

Compared to what the Vics have to play with, it's like combining the best of our current squad with the best of the late 90s Freo squad. Horrendous. Even the captain is cooked. And Bobby Hill? Would be like Victoria naming JUH.

Would prefer they roll out the OWLs.

Extending it to the notable others is even better. I thought half these players had retired or had died:

Let’s be honest guys. We would all have loved to have seen Franklin and JK kicking goals in the black swan jumper.

It’s a shame it’s taken this long to get off the ground. I loved the SOO as a kid.
Agreed.

Was at the 94 point 1977 win at Subiaco. Great fun. Smuggled into the ground in the back of a police paddy wagon.

Should make it a state league origin e.g best of WAFL, SANFL and give the non afl listed players a chance to shine. The prize - get to show your wares on a bigger stage. Just spit balling here
Yeah this already exists.

We beat SA by 5 odd goals earlier this year.

Perhaps it's like fast bowlers, you produce more quality big men - especially ruckmen it seems - thats draws specialist coaches, greats retire in WA, tall kids choose footy.

But the development thing is a real issue, and there's no incentive for our clubs to throw money at the academies and develop their own which has proven hugely successful in non-football states. The decline of the WAFL and those clubs' role in talent development is also a big factor.

AFL needs step in but they'd probably demand the licences are sold so we'll just keep doing this until it can't be ignored anymore.

Can't wait for SoO want to snag some good WA merch, sink some export in the outer and boo Harley.

Fremantle fans are doing 2 out of 3 of these things already

I was initially pessimistic but the more I think about it the more I like it.
I like the fact the season isn't compromised by it.
Okay, the trade off is that it won't be peak players but that's okay.

For once a good idea implemented pretty well by the AFL, weird Valentines day date aside.

Fox Footy's take on the WA side.

No Ginbey and Waterman is an absolute piss take. Hough also stiff.
The actual team will probably have an extended bench, so plenty of room for them.

That team is getting pumped. The AFL missed the boat with introducing this 5-10 years ago. That was time any other state had a team close to the vics

Aaron naughton...yuck
