Eddie and Jimmy Podcast this morning, Eddie going on about the Lions becoming too good because of our access to father/sons, academies and having good players wanting to come to us, he said the Lions could win 3 flags in a short space of time like they did in 2001-03, hinting at that being on the back of AFL preferential treatment. He even brought up that the Pies were ripped off in the 2002 GF and not for the first time.

  Cough cough... Daicos brothers, Darcy Moore, Isaac Quaynor, Dan Houston, Bobby Hill, Lachie Schultz.

We have done better than them re bringing in players from other clubs but that is down to how well our club is run.

Neale, Dunkley, Daniher, Cameron certainly top the likes of Houston/Hill/Schultz.
They all conveniently forget that the bulk of our squad was built by astute drafting and trading after spending a decade being irrelevant. Eddie's just bitter that we're getting a fraction of the benefits that Victorian clubs enjoy all the time.

If McLachlan can bring the same intensity in his hunt for the ball on offence to his defensive intent he will be chance of a regular spot in the seniors.
Totally agree, he is a McCarthy, Ah Chee, even a Charlie type replacement if he could just go hunting in defence. It seems to me some players just read the game better, no I'm an attacker, whoops we lost it now I'm a defender - they call them 2 way runners I guess. I just wonder if you can learn that reading of the game and flicking of the switch. I wonder if they gave him a few months in defence in the VFL would it help, just keep him behind the ball for a while.

This is an asinine response to a perfectly reasonable list management/player retention strategy

We hear enough about the irrational complaints and hurt feelings of non-Lions Victorians, do we really need more?
I’d say it’s a 3KZ is Football response to a silly suggestion.

While it may be aspirational to have more Qlders on the list to reduce the go-home factor, to try and fill a list with players only from one state would be a very poor list strategy. We would essentially be cutting ourselves off from the best football talent in the country.
Our success in recruiting non-Qlders to the club is the reason we’re a premiership team.

If we get Ridley, is that the end for Doedee's chances of earning a spot in the 22 when everyone is fit?
I would say no. The limiting factor for Doedee is his ability to get his body back to something like what it was before he did his knee at Adelaide, or his ability to modify his game to work with his new physical limitations. If he can then there’s competition for spots, and typically we’ve seen possession is the determining factor for best 22.
Keep in mind Ridley also needs to get back from a long run of injuries. Whoever has the best success in getting their body right over the off-season gets first crack.

3 of the top 5 draft picks in this years draft are from QLD. The days of victorian players being the most talented footballers are over, and if the academies stay untouched, i wouldn't be surprised if the best players continually came from QLD within the next 3-5 years. Eddie talked about the problem facing victorian development recently that they're all from private schools, and the WA draftpool is getting weaker and weaker. The two states that are producing better footballers than they did 10 years ago are from QLD and NSW.

Funnily enough, said he couldn’t get any intel on Starce. Flabbergasting. He’s definitely going you’d think.
Why? If there’s no intel, it means he and his management are not talking to other clubs.

It does probably mean he has not told West Coast no, but it could also mean he’s not told them yes. His 100% focus right now is winning another premiership medal, not negotiating his next contract.
If we do manage to go back-to-back, then surely the temptation to remain and become immortal (3-peat) would be a massive attraction as compared to playing the next few years as part of another rebuild. So he genuinely may be in a position of decision not made.

Cal Twomey talking about getting aggressive with the Essendon (Merrett) trade and getting other clubs involved with players and picks. Specifically mentioned Bailey again.

Hypothetically, Essendon comes to us this year with one of picks 4, 5 or 8 (from hawks) and a future first for Bailey. And Bailey says I want to leave as a pre agent… would you entertain this?

Otherwise, if he does end up leaving next year we could be looking at a compo pick in the 20s (if we went all the way) after potential bids/compensation etc.

I understand we have Annable to bid on, but i’m sure we could dangle any high-end picks to a club like North for their F1 next year.

Essendon and North F1 picks would be very nice, albeit i’d prefer bailey to sign on.

If Essendon were to offer that it would be a gross overpay, I haven’t paid any attention to the draft this year but it would depend on how good the guys in the top 5 are and whether we can get the picks in ahead of the Annable bid.

Also that many high end draftees in one year probably isn’t a good thing with our list as they’d probably end up playing VFL and how long they’ll want to do that for is unknown.

I’d be more interested in future first round picks depending on how far into the future clubs will be able to trade firsts.

Yeah, sorry just edited it to include this. Wouldn’t necessarily have to use future first round picks. Could be used as trade bait for talent also.

Not really.

Doubtful.

The next two academy crops for GC look pretty shallow. At this stage I don’t see any first round prospects there.

For the Lions, I believe we possibly have two end of first round prospects in each of the next two drafts.

That’s a false dichotomy though…it’s not all or none

the strategy is about choosing the Qlder over the interstater when all other things are approximately equal

Our Academy is probably the most important thing about this club. Likewise, we should be a team that is full of queenslanders. That was the purpose of it, and having the lions being a team that is truly queenslander would help the growth of this game even more in Brisbane and all across QLD. The club should be fighting hard for this, because i don't want the best QLD talents to be playing in Melbourne.

Crazy to think that nigh on ten years ago we were analysing what players such as Tom Bell and Cam Ellis-Yolman could contribute, and now we have the likes of Allen and Draper (and maybe more) joining and it just seems like par for the course.

If he said he was interested in such an offer this year to our List Management team, they’d want to be bloody confident in turning him around over the next 12 months.

All hypotheticals. As mentioned, best case scenario is he signs this off season. But only they would be aware of his interests.
